Have you ever been to Rocky Point? What tips and tricks would you add to our top ten?
@azmarkm18504 жыл бұрын
You don't need the tourist visa to go to Rocky Point. If you see the hassle free zone signs, that is what they are referring to. If you travel a bit out of Rocky Point down the coast, they will start to require a visa.

There's definitely a difference between the legal requirements and reality here. Mexican law states that you need an FMM if you will be in the country for more than 6 hours. It used to be 72, but they recently changed it to half a day. For a stay of 7 days or less the FMM is free. The reality though is that nobody is ever going to ask you for it, or check it, especially going to Rocky Point. Other parts of Mexico are a different story. We've driven across the whole country of Mexico and have been living here for 5 months now, and only been asked to see the visas twice. The Hassle Free zone you mention is referring to the Temporary Vehicle Importation Permit. There is a very large "Free Zone" that stretches into Sonora and includes Rocky Point within which you don't have to obtain a TIP and within which customs laws are relaxed, this doesn't mean you aren't required by law to get an FMM though. Mexican car insurance is also legally required.

Excellent video. As a frequent traveler and knowing my gente, just outside the crossing is a speed trap. Limit is 25 mph which all new visitors violate. A good tip is to set you cruise control to 25mph. Locals may honk and tailgate but they will go around you. Also, very common for cars to yell and scream at you but they are all bark and no bite. If cops stop you, do not leave road, go to station and pay fine. If you pull out your wallet loaded with bills your fine just doubled. I always keep just a few one dollar bills in wallet and stash elsewhere.

I myself dislike attempting to bargain with the locals while out shopping. Many of the locals are very much dependent on tourism. Living conditions there are not ideal for many.

Yes--many allow it, but some don't. Be sure to ask. You will get charged for Mexican insurance through them and it's counted by the 24-hour timeframe. ie crossing the border at 4pm Jan 1st and crossing back into the states at 4pm Jan 3rd is 2 days of insurance. Insurance will run $30-$40/day.

This was great, thank you. My one big disappointment - that you encourage people to talk the vendors down. Sometime, follow one of them home. They live in great poverty. My family ALWAYS pays their price. Always. I remember being in Bucerias with my granddaughter (20) once. We came out of the restaurant and my granddaughter saw a very young girl selling little beaded bracelets. Not only did my granddaughter give her the equivalent of $10 for two bracelets, she also gave the girl her leftovers. That poor child grabbed the food and ran and hid, then ate her food. Shame on you for being all about you.

If you had watched some other videos on my channel you perhaps would not be so quick to judge. I have lived in Mexico for 3 years of my life. Bartering is expected and market prices are always fluid. Charity has no place in purchasing. If you want to do REAL good I suggest donating to one of the many non-profits that I work with. I just returned from Bolivia visiting the poverty stricken Aymara people with Choice humanitarian. They work with the poorest of the poor to fix real problems at the root of poverty, not just give handouts. Consider making a donation: choicehumanitarian.org/donate/
