I was in Home Depot a while back and I decided I would see how accurate some of their cheap squares were. So I grabbed 2 aluminum speed squares and put the flanged sides down and put them against each other, no daylight. I did the same with a few others, same result. I grabbed some different kind of squares and the same result. These were around $8.00. I'm sure Peckers equivalent would be ten times that. I would rather save the $65 and take my wife to dinner.

You can bring a framing square back into square by tapping the corner with a ballpein hammer.if it's toed inwards, tap the inside corner slowly and check on every hit. You will stretch the metal and move the blade outward. If you're too aggressive, you may have to file the blade flat if you hit it too close to the edge. Worked in a fab shop and my boss was too cheap to buy us new ones. So we had to improvise. Tap the outside of the corner if it's out the opposite way.
@josephmurray358310 ай бұрын
You probably don't want to drop your square if you have to use it again. So now you can always remember that your cheap Boss helped you teach all of us viewers who have out of squared Square s get them back into square... Makes me sound like a square. Can you build more? Everyone is doing tool reviews, I get it. But can you get back to what you used to do? Shoot that’s why most of us OG’s are here in the first place. I LOVED this video! This is what us new woodworkers need! Sage unbiased overviews of great tools so we know what to get, why, and how to use it. I VEHEMENTLY disagree with Spills51 on his comment about “pushing tools”. WE NEED TOOLS! And tools are seldom covered in such depth, with such expertise, and so concisely and quickly: yes, it’s a fire hose, but I don’t want a whole video on just one tool: life is too short. You could make a whole separate channel on just covering tools. And perhaps this an idea we can take away from Spills51’s comment. He obviously has all the tools he needs, so bravo for him. In deference to his comment, perhaps we do need a separate channel on projects and techniques. I don’t disagree with that in principle. SO, if we want to keep just one channel (often needed for critical mass), the maybe have three different video “shows” one for each gender. So there can be the “Tool Review Show”, the “Tool Techniques Show”, and then the “Projects Show”, each with its own focus. This may be the closest to satisfying everyone. But for example with projects, I’m probably not going to watch many projects videos unless it’s for something that I want or am planning to build. But I’ll watch tools and techniques all day long. Other might revers this. Let each to their own.

i've been doing angled dowels more than 20 years. mainly on wooden tool boxes. drill a block of wood the size you need, glue in a metal sleeve for repeatability. been doing fastener-less woodwork for years. angled dowels are best for multilayered bench tops and anvil stands you get the expansion and contraction you need without splitting. (unless your leaving it out in the rain or dumping it in a pool, duh!) always good to let wood move and tighten in on itself. hint for stacked 2x4 tops. do an alternating X pattern (corner to corner, cross in the middle) and v (middle to corner) in both the x AND y axis to mitigate stretching AND bowing. definitely helps reduce twist when you do alternate bows and make them fight against (straighten) each other by keeping both boards in opposing tension. (face to face, not edge to edge). flatten the top with the longest plane you can get your hands on at 120deg angles (or parallel and 2 45's) and your top is square, flat and level. done. lastly, NEVER use harder dowels than your base wood. you'll crack the glue or round out (loosen) your holes for glueless. mallet fixes that. (mostly). Tightbond ultimate for the win. best for thermal and humidity expansion/contraction. edit: almost forgot, end grain sealer to prevent checking. end grains are mini straws, your cracks begin here!

For anyone looking at using the spring clamps, quick tip: they can be a pain to grip 2 smaller pieces without them shifting in or out as the pressure settles. Turn them sideways or more parallel to the workpiece and they're way easier to keep straight.

If I bought a $300 square would it do anything to make these pieces more square than what they actually are?

For what I do, I'm going with the Stankey FatMax mini 10 times out of 10. Most woodworkers don't need to measure more than 6 feet. If you're measuring a room or space, sure, but for straight up building things like furniture and other small pieces, it's perfect. Cheap too

Tape measures are more for construction where you can be a 16th to an 8th off and it's no big deal. I always used rulers for shop work. If I'm measuring more than a yard stick,I'll use a tape. But if all your measurements are under 30 inches,use a ruler. It's less clunky and more accurate. If you are doing shop work have a few rulers or different lengths.

Considering the aluminum rulers: the steel Starret combo that I’ve had for 38 years does all that, very accurately, and more. It also doesn’t get ruined the first time you drop it on concrete, which is why I don’t need any more aluminum measuring and marking devices. Woodpeckers charging more for this stuff than the cost of a proper 12” machinist’s combo square is just silly.

Really enjoying your feed. I’m getting ready to retire next January and am buying toys for my workshop once I move and get one. I’ve made your website a favorite and will definitely be ordering plans to start woodworking. I’m very much a newbie and will using a lot of pine and watching your videos to learn. Thanks again. Bill

Do you have any videos on using the scroll saw? I lost my brother recently and his wife got me to take all his things out of his shed which included a scroll saw but I never saw or used one so I don't know how to use it or anything about it and it is for home use hobbies. I did find blades for cutting metal only only two days ago but I'm dying to see it working and what I can use it for

Any tips or tricks for removing glue from parallel clamps?
@t5782-j4o Жыл бұрын
Sounds like your parallel clamps are wood? 1. Wax them before the glue up. 2. Put a barrier between the clamps and the wood. Flat Silicone mat will work best, but I've used pieces of paper when I was in a pinch.

@@t5782-j4o that’s my mistake, they are not made out of wood. That is a big typo. But thank you for responding!

Im curious why are there so many kinds of setup block for table saws and routers etc...can you just use a caliper?

I prefer the metal spring clamps because they have a lower profile and power tools tend to get by them easier.

I was looking for a woodworking video, but I found a shameless schill. Way to sell out.

Will the TSO track saw square fit the WEN track saw? I’m not sure which guide it is most similar to.

If you have a bunch of money, you can be a wood worker too. 😂😂😊

I started by borrowing a very old circular saw and 2 very old drills. That's all the power tools I had. I built stuff and sold stuff with those tools and built my way up from there. Money has zero to do with it. It's all about "want to." If you have the want to, you can do it. If you make excuses, you won't.

Great video! I have a request to ask if you will! Can you guys do a tutorial on how to sqaure a miter saw? I have an older 12" Ryobi and I just cannot get it square. New blade, everything. With Christmas I cannot afford to buy a replacement, but at the same time if I can't get it square I'm out even more money. If not, thanks anyways but I'd appreciate it! Merry Christmas!
