You actually aren't that far off. The tracks that have those kinds of features that look like they might be shortcuts but aren't often have data in their files that suggest there _was_ a shortcut at one point. Pirate Skull Pass's powerup brick map has out of bounds bricks that correlate with a possible shortcut linked to that skull. Even Knightmarathon has two removed shortcuts that were discovered in a similar way.

As a child I realized that the time trials give you hints for shortcuts, either by Veronica Voltage driving through them or by placement of a non-green brick, which would otherwise be pointless in that track. The only exception is in Ice Planet Pathway, where they'd put 3 whites and a blue brick towards the end for no reason. I went insane while searching for a shortcut that would open up with a fully powered up blue brick.

@@solidzack Maybe because if you weren't quick enough and didn't use the 3 white brick power-up right after you got it, you'd drive into the blue brick, thus having to search for another green one to appear?

Yeah, well, the panel is there in case you're colour-blind. Also, I doubt you can get it on the first lap since you wouldn't know in advance the combination of the lights.

@@bengray8637 Oh, sure, the colour-panel showing the colour-code is there just in case someone is colour-blind. You know, to help them see which of the colour-gates they should drive through during the next lap. I know there are different kinds of colour-blindness, but still... And seeing as the code only have 8 different combinations, the odds of opening the gate on the first lap is 1/8.

That warptunnel at 4:28 is considerably the worst shortcut in the game. It takes you no further than to the other side of the circle and you also waste valuable power bricks to get it open. Using normal warp takes you further so using powerbricks on this is a strategical misstep in my opinion.

The second one on Ice Planet Pathway, I wouldn't even consider a shortcut considering it slows you down more than actually helping. Less bricks, too. But I guess it still is technically a shortcut lmao

it does give perfect positioning for warping to the end with perfect range and 3 whites with a green so i say you have to include the warp in with the shortcut

turbo boosting off the ramp near the beginning of Alien Rally Asteroid is also kind of a shortcut

They did have additional shortcuts that were cut out. Knigtmareathon had two shortcuts. Desert Adventure had another. Pirate Skull pass had another path that was at least unreleased.
