Thanks for this excellent night tour. I have seen the St.Peter’s several times and was too overwhelmed with the masterpieces that adorn all the walls, let alone the sculptures. Sad to say, but it is the only church I’ve visited that I am not inspired to pray. The structure, the architect & the art are just too distracting for me. There is no other basilica like it. Again, I was in complete awe when I visited the Sistine chapel. I was moved beyond words at Michelangelo’s genius. That’s when it hit me, he must have been inspired by a greater Being. After all, according to him, he was not a painter.

Excellent video, some interesting facts: 8:02 The obelisk in the middle of the square was brought to Rome from Egypt by emperor Caligula in 37AD. It’s the only obelisk in Rome not to be broken & not to have any written hieroglyphs. It’s topped with a bronze cross, in which there’s a piece of the true cross. 8:49 known as the Scala Regia (Latin for regal staircase) its the official entrance to the papal palace and is reserved for kings, queens, dignitaries, etc. 11:41 in case you missed it, the red disk, made of porphyry stone, inlaid in the marble flooring (two people are walking over it) is a very important stone. It was the crowning stone in which Emperor Charlemagne knelt on & was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo 3 in the year 800AD. Another 21 Holy Roman Emperors went on to be crowned on this stone. It initially sat near the alter in the old basilica & was saved during its demolition & put in its current spot. 12:28 Porta Sancta “Holy Door” is a bricked up door only open every 25 years during the jubilee years, last one being in the year 2000. It’ll be struck by the Pope with a silver hammer & opened for the whole year before the Pope begins to brick it up at the end of the 12th month mark. Any Catholic who enters during the jubilee year is given an automatic indulgence from their sins. 12:45 monument to Queen Christina of Sweden, her actual coffin located in the papal crypt. She’s one of only six women buried in the Vatican. She’s personally one of my favourite women in history, I recommend reading her story. 15:40 statue of St. Peter, saved from the old basilica. It’s good luck to touch or kiss his foot, so much so it’s been worn down over time & is now a lump of bronze lol. On his feast they actually dress the statue & even crown him. The red backing is mosaics. 16:34 St. Peter’s Baldachin (bronze canopy) crowns the alter. Design by Bernini, the bronze was stripped from the pantheon on orders of Pope Urban 8th, melted down & reused for the construction, which took 11 years. The columns are based on the style of the Solomonic columns from the temple of Jerusalem. On the column base there’s a story of a woman giving birth & if you follow each column base it ends with the birth of a child. 23:57 monument to the Royal Stuarts (James, Charles & Henry), the would be kings of England through the Jacobite claim. Again they’re actually buried in the crypt below. It’s rumoured Queen Elizabeth, the queen mother, funded the recent cleaning & restoration of the monument. 24:33 The two baby cherubs, known as the stoup of San Pietro (or La acquasantiere di San Pietro) were carved in 1722-25 & is an almost 2m tall holy water fount. They’re two of them either side of the basilica entrance. There’re so many more monuments & details I didn’t cover, it’s just too big, but I hope what I did piqued your interested. I tried to cover things commonly overlooked.

@@litox6748 the Pieta is an amazing piece of work. I didn’t include it cause I thought it was so commonly known. Did you know, when commissioned, Michelangelo was essentially an unknown artist, at 24yrs old. Upon the statues completion he overheard people attributing the work to another known artist at the time & was so irritated, he carved his named across Mary’s sash “Michelangelo Buonarroti of Florence created this” so everyone knew who carved it. He later regretted his overt emotion & never signed another piece of work, so to this day it’s his only signed item. Also some psycho attacked the item in the 1970s & for this reason it’s now kept behind bulletproof glass.

For a unique experience to see where St Paul was buried prebook the scarce scavi tour through The Vatican. It takes you deep under the basilica and the plaza to the original relics of 2000 years ago incl paths and buildings. Most azaming tour but very confined spaces

It is free to visit the basilica, but try to get there before 9am, as far as the Sistine Chapel is concerned , reserve your tickets online to skip the lines at 7:30 am. It is well worth the money.

I was a bit disappointed with St.Peter’s. Of course it’s an amazing and architecturally important building, but too OTT internally a case of we can’t get enough ornamentation. I much prefer the exterior, that fabulous dome and beautiful baroque facade. Personally I prefer Santa Maria Maggiore which also has the advantage of being not so over crowded.

Two churches I recommend are both in Trastevere, Santa Maria in Trastevere & St.Cecilia. The former is older than St.Peter’s and not as OTT. The mosaics are breathtakingly glorious.

I use GoPro hero 9 mounted on a gimbal. Don't use auto at night filming. Turn off hypersmooth, set e.v, shutter speed, iso min and iso max manually

I've watched....and downloaded all 4 in the series. Planning on using them as a sort of virtual map when we come there in May. Would be cool to of had a picture in the front or first or attached, or after the fact...lol, a zoomed in map w/ street names, with the highlighted path you took for each one. No you don't need a ticket to visit the basilica but you need a ticket to visit the Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel.

This is a very nice video. Thank you. It has been many decades since i was there and I was dismayed to see women in bra strap tops, with no sweater or large scarf (try doing that in a mosque), people sitting and lounging on alter pieces, the Pieta behind glass, and the clunky black railings all over the approaches to the Basilica. "In my day...: Ha ha ha. But I guess it's mostly intact, minus the scruffies. I look forward to watching your other videos.
