Lucky you! 🤗 I got my full size violin when I was 6 and I had to wait 5 years, using school rented violins, to be able to play it! Still remember that moment.

I started playing when I was 7 at school. My parents were told that I needed private lessons as I had the talent go further. Didn't get my own violin until I was 11 (1981 - showing my age here). It cost £110 which back then was a lot of money. Still have it now. Had it valued a few years ago and it was worth £1,000.

I started when I was 7, I was supposed to end my music education after 3 years and go to a “normal” school.... ended up in a professional music school and music academy of music for 15 years straight 🤣

Take a peek at where the sound post is against the upper plate. Someone buying a violin like this wouldn't know how to move it, but when you place your bridge, side it into position so the post is ever so slightly behind the bridge. That's a cheating way of getting the best tone.

I remember about two weeks ago I went to a state fair. There was this Mexican quintet (mariachi) and they started playing in front of us. I gradually lost interest in music for a few years now, but their performance inspired me to get back into music again. Yeah, I wish I wasn't making this up. I kind of got the cue to keep on pursuing music. I'll stop being sentimental now. I just bought a violin and it's arriving on March 7th (3 days from now). I also bought a mute. Fingers crossed for no noise complaints. Also: I'm not 100% sure if I want to play violin yet. This is kind of a test trial. And I don't have plenty of experience with playing string; but I want to try something new for once.

Just to clarify. Is there any difference between this two violins besides learning points? Second, how would you rate this violin after few months? Is it worth buying? I'm piano player but always wanted to learn 🎻. Thanks, K
@BarbaraTheViolinist2 жыл бұрын
In terms of the instrument itself there is no difference (apart from the learning point). I think the one without the learning points comes with a tuner (you would have to check on the product description)… I think it’s an ok instrument for beginners.

Would this be a good violin for an 11 year old child just starting out playing violin?
@BarbaraTheViolinist2 жыл бұрын
Yes. It might need a new set of strings after about 6 months (depending how many hours a week is your child going to practice for). Other than that - it’s a good instrument to start with! 😊

What’s the difference between the beginner and intermediate violin?
@BarbaraTheViolinist Жыл бұрын
Price and quality. It also depends on the person that is learning. If you are a child in a professional music school then you might need a good (slightly more expensive) beginner instrument because of the tone as you are learning faster to become a pro. If you are an adult, learning just for fun of the experience, then, unless you can afford a hand crafted luthier violin and money is not an issue, you can get by with a manufactured, cheaper instrument which will sound ok and will allow you to learn the basic technique. I could make a whole separate video on the subject but that’s just to give you an idea 😊

Beginners please rent. You’ll get an outstanding quality violin professionally set up by a Luthier that will be a pleasure to learn with. These cheap ones are really not good for beginners and will frustrate your learning process. You’ll also need to pay quite a bit to change the strings, get the bridge and nut altered and possibly fingerboard and sound post alterations which will cost quite a lot of additional money. These instruments are really not good for beginners.
@BarbaraTheViolinist Жыл бұрын
Thank you Lynette. I do really appreciate your feedback. I understand where you are coming from, however, not everyone has access to a professional luthier where they live. If they do - I completely agree! But it can cost a lot of money and luthiers can be like car mechanics - charge you a lot if you don’t have some basic knowledge (my experience). This is A solution for someone who wants to have a violin on a budget. There is no real need to alter the nut and fingerboard … I think I mentioned that it is best to have a teacher/professional to help with setting up the bridge and strings. But again - this violin allows you to do that yourself following the instructions as it is not an expensive option and if damage done, it won’t break the bank. They are good for beginners who want to figure out if they really want to play violin. From my experience 1 in 20 people really stick to it and then they invest in a better instrument. I could talk about it forever because there are many routes and possibilities. I had the luck of having exactly what you said, a lovely violin throughout my education, but I was in a professional music school. I tested out this violin and trust me, these are not the worst that one can come across. There are better options, of course, like with everything in life. Beginners focus mostly on trying to get the posture, holding the bow properly, playing on the right string… a cheap violin is the least of the concerns in this. I am looking for solutions and creating opportunities - not problems. Cheers! x

I got an eastar violin but the pegs when tuning, they either don't stay in place or the string gets so loose they don't play 😩 anyone else have a problem with eastar and the pegs??
@BarbaraTheViolinist2 жыл бұрын
Have you tried pushing them in SLIGHTLY when tuning? They won’t stay in place just by themselves, they have to wedged in. You have to be very careful though to not push them in too much.

Finaly, good video, thank you.. it was a compilation of unpacking, maintenance, intro how to tune, etc... Initially, from name of video I expected "review" - so comparison, of sound quality of these violins.. for 100 USD? pity, that you did not mentioned your opinion on sound quality... that in package is tuner or spare string has no meaning if sound of violin is terrible... pity, that not mentioned at all. What is your opinion, where is buy decent "whole life intermediate" violin? absolutely I will not buy it on amazon... maybe luthier, local small manufacture, hand made, in every country are some... tschuss.
@BarbaraTheViolinist Жыл бұрын
I cannot figure out if your comment is a praise or sarcastic criticism… The sound of this particular violin is OK for the price. As you rightly said, you cannot expect the world from this instrument for that price. However, it is a good starter violin for someone who treats it more like a hobby. For a decent “whole life intermediate violin” I would recommend visiting a luthier or a good instrument shop with your teacher or a fellow violinist as there you would be able to try various instruments and decide for yourself. Cheers!

A beginner should not spend a lot on a violin, because what if you don’t like it? But spend enough to get something playable, of course.
