ISSYAUTO Subaru Forester Cross Bars
ISSYAUTO reached out to me asking if I'd unbox, install and review their cross bars for the Subaru Forester factory roof rails. I agreed and was delighted to find these roof rail crossbars were very easy to install, lightweight, high-quality aluminum with durable ABS plastic ends and were adjustable to fit the slight differences in width of my 2018 Subaru Forester roof rails. On highway, these cross bars are practically silent compared to driving without the cross bars in regard to wind noise. Their aerodynamic, wing-shape clearly cuts through the high-speed moving air and mitigates any turbulent-induced wind noise. While ISSYAUTO states these cross bars are rated to handle 150lbs, that matches the capacity stated in the Subaru Forester factory user's manual for weight-rating on the factory roof rails. ISSYAUTO did not mention whether these cross bars would withstand going through automatic car washes but for me here in Michigan, I had to test whether they'd endure it or not as we routinely use indoor, automatic car washes to help wash away some of the road salt our vehicles are subjected to during our harsh, cold Winters. I was nervous but grateful to find these cross bars easily survived the violent rigors of the automatic car wash brushes and cloth mechanisms and have returned a couple times to be sure these will continue to hold up...and they have...thankfully!
These cross bars worked great with my Thule ski racks to hold my very trendy 1990 cross-country skis offered plenty of clearance between the ski bindings and the top of the Forester's roof. The Thule ski rack clamps attached perfectly to the cross bars and provided quiet, secure transport of two pairs of cross-country skis at speeds up to 55mph on our backroads. I have no reservations about heading to the highway for higher speeds...I just didn't have time to get on the motorways to test drive before posting this video.
In my opinion (and my wife's!), I'm not removing these cross bars as I suspected I might if not in use. Why?...because their flat-out stylish! I mean it...they look good on our Subaru Forester. They make the Forester look a bit more athletic and as my wife stated, "...makes it look European." I agree with her. These roof rail cross bars actually add to the Subaru Forester's looks. In regard to fuel efficiency, they're very lightweight and I don't feel they add any appreciable weight whatsoever to the vehicle. I'm sure they are adding a bit of aerodynamic drag at highway speeds but the Sunday following Thanksgiving, my wife and I drove our daughter back to Chicago in awful rain storms almost he entire way with very high cross winds and returned without as much rain but even higher crosswinds. Mileage lost is maybe 10-20 miles per tank of fuel but that's also possibility due to our "Winter gasoline mix ratio" which lowers our overall fuel economy due to the richer fuel mixture our engine controls use to combat the cold starts and operating temperatures of Winter as well as the fuel mixture itself contains more additives and less combustible efficiency so all cars lose some efficiency here in the rustbelt during Winter. I think any fuel efficiency loss due to these crossbars is very minimal.
Overall, my wife and I really like these ISSYAUTO cross bars and it's not just because we got them for free in return for making this video but because they truly seem to be a good product. I can honestly say I endorse these crossbars and I'm thankful to ISSYAUTO for sending me a pair. I recommend you put your Forester roof rails to work and buy a pair yourself.

Your video was very clear and precise in showing how to install these crossbars. Going through the car wash was a clever idea, too.

Thank you for posting. I was stuck trying to unlock the cap. The illustration included shows the key turning to the right. Your video helped get this going. I am also impressed buy the quality of these cross bars.

I'm so happy my video helped you! I completely understand on those end caps...one more word of caution if you have another set of keys for something like ski racks. I thought I knew which keys went to what then spent almost an hour cursing these rails' locks thinking they'd already seized up after one season of Michigan salted roads only to find I'd been using the wrong keys that look literally identical...Funny how using the correct keys makes a difference 😆Shows these are pretty secure, too...since I was starting to think I was going to have to cut them off until I found I was using the wrong keys. I hope they give you many years of good service. Also, do check the tightness of the mounting bolts after some miles/weeks. You may need to snug them up a bit...I don't think they'd come off but they might slightly move a smidge on the roof rails. Might have been just me not fully tightening originally as I recorded...I can get a bit distracted doing that. Thanks for watching and keep us posted on how they work for you! 💪

Considering these, what is the weight rating? Can’t seem to find it on Amazon.

It's been awhile since I made this video so I had to re-read my own video description 🤣. According to my video description..."While ISSYAUTO states these cross bars are rated to handle 150lbs, that matches the capacity stated in the Subaru Forester factory user's manual for weight-rating on the factory roof rails." I hope that answers your question. You may wish to contact their customer service or post a question on the Amazon listing to confirm. Thanks for watching and let us know if you get a set of these what you think of them. Good luck! 👍

Help. I got these and have no keys. Can you tell how I can go about getting keys for the cross bars?

Bummer! If you bought them from Amazon, I'd contact Amazon Customer Support and tell them. They should send you another set with keys or at minimum refund your purchase and have you send it back. You could also try reaching out to IssyAuto on their website but I've had decent experience with Amazon Customer Support via their mobile app and/or calling their Customer Support. I hope you can get it resolved. Let us know how it turns out and good luck! 🤞

Thanks for posting. Just bought these and they should arrive Thursday. Replacing them with my Cargoloc ones that hang too far over the edge for me to put an awning on them for comfort (bought them during Covid when car and camping supplies were at a low). These will allow me to put the awning on the side rail. Do you think a Thule cargo box will fair fine, when full, on top of these?

I think it’ll be alright. Keep in mind my wife’s 2018 Forester roof rails are rated for 150lbs (if my memory serves me)…these crossbars ratings match the factory ones so keep that in mind in terms of weight of the box and contents. Also, recheck the tightness of the crossbar bolts after having them mounted a few days. I found I was able to tighten them up just a bit more after seeing they could move just a small bit. I’m presuming just from the pads compressing a bit. Let us know what you think and how they work with the Thule cargo box. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@@WorksIRL thanks for replying. Definitely won’t be 150lb of stuff in there, we stuff it with the lighter things (sleeping bags, pillows, chairs) and keep heavy contents in the car. Thanks for the reply!

I made my video almost two years ago and haven't visited their Amazon store in awhile. Unfortunately, I don't see them listing crossbars for the Subaru Forester any more at all. I see a model for the Crosstrek and Impreza. I'd like to suggest you contact ASSYAUTO directly to ask them but I'm not sure I saw any "contact info" on their Amazon store. Check to see if you can find way to ask them a question as I may have just missed it. I suspect the "Wilderness" edition Forester may have slightly bigger/beefier roof rails so you're asking a valid question and I'm sorry I can't answer that for you. Good luck and please stop back and let us know if you get any answer...thanks for watching!
