We misspoke about the IR emitter. It's meant to blast a signal out to compatible devices like set-top boxes, soundbars, receivers, etc. This lets you voice control them all through Alexa so you can do a number of tasks hands-free like changing volume, power on/off, or set up full routines so a single voice command turns on the entire home theater system.

"Why does it have so many 5 star reviews ?" Because Amazon star system is broken. 4 stars means "works slightly worse than expected", and 5 is "work as or slightly better than expected" You can only know if a product is terribly bad with this system. My parents just bought 4 of these. 2 big ones and 2 middle sized. 75" and 55". The main reason is that they just bought a new house, my dad is slowly converting the entire thing into a smart house via Alexa. That's one of those Amazon specific features that you were talking about. He has smart switches/outlets/lightbulbs in nearly every room that can turn on and off via Alexa voice control. Also, he has a smart doorknob on the utility room since it is outside, it also reports to Alexa. Combined with his 2 ring doorbells and the security cameras that he's going to set up, he's going to have full view and control of the exterior of his house and full control on the interior as well. Another thing he did was run full home ethernet to each room in the house. All of the TVs are on it as well as his office equipment and all of his security cameras as well. They are power-over-ethernet. Needless to say, it is pretty cool to walk around the house and tell Alexa to do things.

For a 75", $1100 isn't crazy, but also with what the TV comes with, It definitely belongs closer to $800 or $900. @@anonymouskultist lol, I work in Product Flow (warehouse/back of store basically) and more or less lift TVs for a living, so maybe my standards are different, but they really are alarmingly light, and I think your concerns about them falling on pets or children are valid. It isn't an apples to apple comparison because of the class difference, but a 43" Sony X80J weighs 22.1 lbs. (10.02 kg) without the stand, while a 50" Amazon Omni Series weighs 20.8 lbs. (9.43 kg) without the stand. Even Best Buy's in-house brand, Insignia, is heavier at the same size, with a 50" F30 Series weighing 24.7 lbs. (11.2 kg). Linus makes a good point. Anyone can rate anything whatever score they want. The problem is a lot of people either aren't objective in their reviewing (like in games, acknowledging problems is something most don't do), or they just don't have the background/technical knowledge to be accurate in a review. There's nothing WRONG with liking something, if you haven't seen or had anything better. But I think it's rather naive not to listen to someone with the proper knowledge who can tell you what the faults are, so that in your next upgrade, you know what to look for to get an improvement

A "small" note on that privacy part with the microphone kill switch at 11:25 : If a "physical switch" creates a software-popup, it ist most likely NOT a physical switch. Instead, it is likely just a slideable soft-button. The state of the button is read by the software, which then can act differently depending on the state of that switch. So you are still relying on the software not to spy on you, once you flip that switch. But once you buy a TV from Amazon, you are pretty much lost anyway in that regard.
@tylobedo

One thing I would love tv reviews to include (and this goes for ANYBODY reviewing a tv) is if you can set the tv to turn on and go right to an input or to go to the last input. I do not want a TV where I have to select an option on the TV's remote before I transition to the remote for the device I want to use (Cable box, Fire Stick, Xbox, etc....). This would also be good for people like me who use HDMI switchers because we have too many devices hooked up. My current TV has my sound bar on HDMI1 and on HDMI 2 is the switch with three consoles, BluRay player, wireless HDMI adapter and Fire Cube so I have no interest in ever touching the TV's remote unless it is to change a menu option.

Also would be nice to know how long it takes to start up. Every TV I ever owned started really quickly, like 'if they had had splash screens (they didn't) you wouldn't have had time to see them'' quickly, but my mother's current one has a noticeable delay before the brand splash screen comes up, and takes most of a minute between hitting the power button and actually showing whatever input it's getting. @@brycedunlap That's why I just use a home theater pc and a projector. The only real downside is the latency when it comes to gaming, but other than that I find that a decent projector ticks most of the boxes I would want out of a nice big screen. Since I do most of my gaming on a gaming PC in another room anyways, I don't have many latency issues to worry about, but gaming with a projector you notice the stacked input lag of controllers, the projector, and the game; which all might be minor on their own, but are fairly noticeable on things like fighting games. You can actually expect to spend MORE money if you want a dumb tv. Devices get cheaper because they can harvest user data and said data be sold to various data brokers, offsetting the loss any device might be sold at with more tech. To these companies we're all just labrat monkeys with money. We give them money for a product then they make us run the hamster wheel to sell that data off to the highest bidder if you ever choose to connect it to the internet and not block telemetry. It's a sad state of affairs.

My family had an Amazon Fire TV. They're terrible. After a power outage, or turning on in a long time, the TV would take almost an entire minute to turn on. And once it finally did, it would immediately show you all the Amazon apps and features... You know, instead of automatically switching to the one and only input that you have plugged-in. There were a bunch of other issues, too, like not being able to use your TV if your remote needed to be updated, and the fact that the picture adjust settings were buried through several different menus - And then partly covered the screen so you can't even see the adjustments you're making. It was very bad...

The Lag Spikes may be inadequate cooling. My parents and I used to use a Fire TV Stick with our Vizio M55, and it would just be stupid unresponsive after like, 20 or 30 minutes of use. Turns out, the TV was heating up and cooking the Fire Stick. So, after a year of beating our head against a wall. We just... stopped using the Fire Stick and went to Vizio's TV OS once it had all of the features of the Fire Stick we needed. Oh, and the Fire Stick we were using, wasn't even 4K Capable. So, we got a fidelity upgrade just from not using it.

When I saw this last week during the black friday sales, I still choose TCL for the kid's TV. I actually like the Fire stick as a cheap add-on to a plain old TV or monitor, but to have it (poorly) replace baseline TV functionality is a huge fail. As someone who actually owns one of these, I'm going to add my 2 cents: For anyone who hates FireTV - you're wrong. Period. You don't like Amazon... fine. But pretending FireTV sucks is completely without merit. The one we have has some pretty bad diagonal flare. Not a game breaker, but definitely not impressive (discussed at 5:40) The color quality for the (discounted) price point is very good compared to what we were accustomed to. The screensaver doesn't work - the tv just powers off. Probably a firmware issue, but not acceptable. When it self-powers off, it completely severs the link to the soundbar. VERY not acceptable. Toshiba has come out with their own version of the 75" Fire TV and I wish I would have waited for that one, as the FIVE Toshiba FireTVs I have (including 4 as 12+ hour-per-day monitors between two households) have been bulletproof. 8:20 - Gaming on my Toshibas is fantastic, not sure why Onmi screwed it up so bad, In conclusion, for the feature/price point ratio, you're not going to beat a FireTV. Amazon is subsidizing them by hundreds of dollars, so unless you're a hater, there's no reason not to take advantage... but I'm far from sold on the Omni. It might have better picture than the Toshiba, but Toshiba's been doing this for 5 years, and got the bugs worked out.

Good color accuracy in Movie mode for SDR content and acceptable input lag only in game mode? Even without Nicholas's postscript insert I'd suspect this is a TCL TV at its heart. That's pretty much exactly the verdict you guys had for their TVs back in the budget TV round-up / price challenge video with James last year. I bought a 43" 4k TCL Roku TV last year, primarily to use as my PC monitor. For the sub-$200 it cost at the time, it's perfectly fine. The 43" Omni TV is listed for $400 right now; I think that's a bit much for what it has to offer. At the very least, it shouldn't throw ads in your face like a $20 Fire tablet.

I disagree with there being ANY reason to buy it for personal use. Most TV's that you referenced like the Vizio MQ6 are on sale, even the MQ7 is on sale for $100 less than the Amazon TV and it's just an outright better TV that has better software, better features, more dynamic coloring, and better response times. Even Samsung has their Crystal UHD TV line up that's a bit cheaper and performs better than it in both software and color dynamics. Some of the software features are nice for enterprise or office use, like the ability to join zoom calls in it. Throw one of these in a conference room once they're fully supported and they're quite competitive given it's feature set not being too high or too low. For normal every day use though, just stick with Vizio, Samsung, LG, or TCL.

They have been selling the amazonbasics tv in India for the past 2 years i think. I bought one a few months back. Was a very competitive buy around 450$ i think. 50" 4k TV. I think the small dew drop item is an IR Transmitter and not a receiver to control a cable tv box

Amazon put their TVs on sale by ~20% for Black Friday, so I don't think there were any alternatives in the same price bracket at that time. The sale is over now.

I think the most absurd statement made in this video is that a Kirkland branded gaming pc or monitor could exist and somehow be worse than this. Well for one, Kirkland would probably be a rebrand of a popular company or based off of an already popular brand like LG or HP rather than some (mostly) unknown company. And secondly, wouldn't they be directly competing against themselves(Costco) off of already low prices they set themselves rather than trying to set a new low benchmark standard like amazon is doing with this TV?
@HydraulicDesign
@HydraulicDesign 3 жыл бұрын
There's no difference between what Costco does with Kirkland and what AmazonBasics does, other than Kirkland has a better quality reputation. The point of house brands is not just to try to leverage the intelligence from what they sell to try to capture more of that profit, it's to expand the market by offering different(lower) price points. Costco doesn't actually have particularly great deals on PCs, most of the time. Not in Canada anyway.

Just wondering why at this price most people wouldn't just go for the Hisense 75" U7G. I'm fairly certain it would easily outperform this unit in many ways. 🤔

Because most people know Amazon and nobody knows Hisense. Most people are silly sheep when it comes to spending their money.. reputation and big name is everything.

Brand familiarity. How many people have you met that actually know who Hisense is? I'm probably guessing not many. You have to be living under a rock if you didn't know what Amazon is. This tv will end up selling by the truck load because Amazon will be doing heavy discounts and will have brand familiarty... Most people do their holiday shopping on Amazon anyway, so why not by a TV while they're at it.
@robertbrown1338
@robertbrown1338 3 жыл бұрын
@@tyrcipher8811 I still think they will have a hard time against the Samsungs, LGs etc.. but as mentioned it's a brand recognition competition.. Even if Amazon make paltry sales they will still make a bigger dent in the market than Hisense is ever capable of.

@@robertbrown1338 Samsung, LGs... Etc only come into play if you're willing to spend the money. The bulk of people aren't willing to spend money. It why every year I see hundred of people coming out of Walmart with garbage TVs. As some who worked at a IT help desk. I can see a lot 20 something years old picking this tv for their grandparents who are still rocking TV from the early 2000s, so that they can finally get with the times.

I guess I'm just under the assumption that if people are planning on getting a new television and spending a decent amount of cash that they'll do a bit of research. But yeah ... many just go by name recognition and the big 'SAVE $XXX' beside said name.

I bought the Omni series 55 recently, and I'm very happy with it. It was on sale for black Friday, and I also have an amazon visa card. Throw in $100 worth of reward points and gift card dollars from a return... and I ended up spending only $500 for the TV, a wall mount, a drill, a wall shelf and brackets. And then after using the drill, and changing my mind about the wall shelf and brackets, I got $70 back. So, on top of only spending $440 for the TV and a very nice wall mount. I also, get to spread those payments out over 18 months. So, while there were better TVs, this one felt almost free. If it keeps me in the house a few Saturdays in the next year it will have already paid for itself. My only issue with the set so far is that I can't really get my echo speakers to couple with it for surround sound the way I can in the living room using the Fire TV cube.

I have a Samsung Q6 from 2019 and love Samsungs menus and smart tv. It’s so easy to use and responsive. I don’t even need a cable box. I just have the app cable. It’s also pretty good for a tv gaming. It can natively do 1440p 120hz with like 8ms response time. I can actually play old games like mega man without that terrible lag making the game way harder than it already is.

I'm with ya there. I got the insignia 50inch 4k oled model firetv on sale at $280 from $399 which changes the game a bit. I came from a 2014 vizo 67inch. I would never buy my fire TV at that original price. But for this price and the picture quality , this is by far good for me with tweaking. That's all I care aboult, picture. Sound goes threw my own soundbar. The only thing I don't like, is the refresh rate. but I can sacrifice that for the picture quality. I also watch firetv for most, if not all, of my stuff sooo. It doesn't bug me with the ui.

I recently helped a friend buy a new budget TV. I ended up pointing him to a Best Buy (Insignia) Fire TV. A month in and I am advising him to return it and get a ROKU TV. He's had the sound stop working numerous times and the only fix is to reboot Fire TV. Problem is, Fire TV has no reboot menu item so reboot means unplug.
