Tip: set the sd card up as removable storage so you can remove the card and keep everything on it in case you need to do a factory reset. If you set it up as internal storage you will lose all photos and videos when doing the reset.

Formatting a SD card does not erase everything on it. The formatting process changes the file number of each current file. As long as the card isn't written over, the files on the card can be recovered using recover software. Once the card has new files written to it then old files will began to be written over. At that point, it may be too late to recover any previous files. Good simple demonstration. Thank you.

You have to use that storage card as your tablet's internal memory card and that only if you select that option. I recommend using it as a portable storage unit that way you can have it always ready to write/use/erase.

NO sim card works in a Fire, they do not have cell phone capabilities. Only a very few models ever did.

Curious issue - If you set the SD card to "Internal Storage" it will not give you an option to store books that are downloaded to your Kindle to the SD card. It will only allow you to store photos, media, and apps. But if you select "Portable Storage," it allows you the option to download books along with any of your other files. On "Portable Storage" a selection screen will pop up with the option to select all of your files and books. That seems backwards to me!! I wanted to download my books (I have almost 900) so I have access to them at any time. I called Amazon with this issue, and they said they prefer you leave your books on the cloud, anyway, but agreed that I would not be able to store my books to the SD card if it was set on "Internal Storage." So, I have had to reformat my SD card to "Portable Storage" so I can download all of my books to it. Odd.

okay, now that that is done can we take it out, place it into the PC, load music (must faster with PC) and place back into the tablet without having to format again. At first I used format on my PC, loaded all my music and photos, place it back in and the tablet said I had to format the card. I did and lost everything again. I than had to hook my tablet to my PC and load my music that way. I still have more to put on it but I want to do it as quickly as possible so I ask my original question.

Probably because your computer formatted the card with the exFAT file system. It doesn't work with the newer Fire OS versions. Has to be FAT32 (which restricts you to 4Gb file size FYI).

You have to insert the card into the slot about 95% before you start to feel the resistance of the spring. I thought mine was broke at first.
