Amazon Grocery Stores Are Falling Apart All Around Us As Business Face Massive Challenges

People from all over the U.S. are getting outraged by the price increases they're seeing at grocery store chains operated by Amazon. The behemoth retailer is also raising service fees, and shutting down more unprofitable locations this month, even after laying off almost 30,000 employees over the last year, and reporting record profits for the fiscal year ended in March 2024.
Though official agencies and corporate CEOs cite improving economic conditions in their latest reports, most U.S. consumers have yet to report experiencing some financial relief this year. In fact, a LendingClub survey found that 66% of Americans are still feeling the pinch of higher food prices on their monthly budgets, and that may be especially true for Whole Foods' and Amazon Fresh customers.
A few weeks ago, one Amazon customer went viral on TikTok for exposing some of the insane prices for everyday staples she had seen at her local Whole Foods store in Boston. The woman, who goes by the username @via..li on the social media platform, posted a video about her expensive purchases, which has been shared by hundreds of thousands of users, and re-shared on various websites.

I walked into an Amazon Fresh store a few months ago, had a cart and looked about a dozen item prices, left my cart on the spot and walked out. When you see you're being ripped off, simply pull your only power punch - Don't shop there, leave. That goes for any retailer. We do have choices. Amazon will conform to it's customers' wants if they see the stock sitting on the shelves and not moving. Until that happens, this will continue.

Well for right now you but at some point all the other groceries are going to be charging nearly the same I'm already seeing evidence of this I live in Ohio and I can say that the grocery prices are basically crap now you can stick to the cheaper stores somewhere between all these save A lot and Walmart and you can usually get pretty much everything you need and if you're just careful of what you buy or how much of it you buy you can save money that way the problem is simply prices are going up everywhere it's becoming rather unavoidable so at some point yeah Kroger's themselves are going to think it's a wonderful deals to come in and pay $7 for fucking apple and then at some point they're going to pretend to run a sale and talk about how you can buy an Apple for four dollars I mean that's literally how they function. Of course now they're doing this they're just not talking about stuff you know you can pay a dollar fifty for one apple but if you agreed to buy three or four of them then you can get the whole lot of them for you know maybe $2.25 you know everywhere is doing that they're just doing it on a cheaper scale compared to what whole foods is doing it my problem is simply it's some point they're going to go up at price. I don't think the public realizes at least I don't take the a lot of people within the public realize that these competitors watch each other all these stores they're always looking at the other guy to see what he's doing and yeah if they determines that they can get away with you know selling an Apple for $7 then it's very least they're going to go back to their store and try to sell it for $4 as an experiment then I'll inch up the price from there until they reach a price point that nobody likes then they'll back off a little bit and these guys are always watching what the competitors are doing so even though people right now or complaining about Amazon charging $7 for an apple yeah if that blows up it really becomes a big deal bigger than this channel reporting on it you may end up in a situation where you'll see competing stores talk about how they're going to have a great big apple you know that right now they set up a deal with whatever supplier to go get a bunch of these apples and they're going to do their best to try and make Amazon look even worse while they sell a bunch of apples doing it I mean they really could think to do something like that may work it may not work truthfully if you do that on apples alone you're probably going to take a bath in them. Of course A lot of these companies watch each other on the pricing This Is how they decide what they're going to price things for so it's like Walmart will watch Kroger's prices and say well you know we could undercut them by 30 cents on this side of $75 Aldi watches both Kroger and Walmart says they're both nuts we will charge you know 20 cents for the item versus the other two demanding somewhere between 50 and 86 cents they figured they'll make it up in volume which they will. But then of course there is probably a whole host of things that's going on behind the scenes via their suppliers I mean the supplier can literally put a company out of business if they're really the only supplier that you can deal with for specialty products and whole foods case it's going to be a lot of shit stamped organic, if they've been dependent on basically just one supplier possibly three suppliers that's going to be bad news because if something goes on with those particular suppliers and specifically if there's a disagreement between the two companies then you know whole foods won't be able to get what it needs to go on calling itself whole foods and those flyers could literally squeeze their knots and wouldn't be the first time that has happened so for all I know that's what's really going on they could be in the middle of some sort of dispute with their supplier trying to renegotiate contracts and the supplier might be having a set of its own problems where it really needs that price out of the contract they can't go any cheaper even if they wanted to so it might be that Amazon could be investigating whether or not they need to buy the supplier out because they're the guys with the hookup to get all the stuff they might try talking to other suppliers to see if those other suppliers would be willing to maybe buy out that other supplier so they could go on getting what they need but that's all complicated stuff that can take months if not years to hash out the stuff doesn't happen overnight so in the meantime they have crazy prices they run off about a third of their customer base and by the time they are able to negotiate the deals they need they have to then spend even more money to heavily advertise that they're no longer assholes and that you can come back problem is you may not get very many people to come back then what do you do well your business at that point is true so yeah something like whole foods is relatively novelty it's a very old novelty but like with anything when the original people go and a big company comes in and takes it over it usually fucks it up well I think we've seen this!

I went a couple times, but that was the very first, in Austin. Seems once they sold to Amazon / Bezos' a lot has changed. Customers had to pay for his newest $500,000,000.00 superyacht. I read about that on cellphone while the yearly Arctic Freeze was on. The electric blanket I'd bought from Amazon quit exactly then. You can't make this stuff up 😜. We've been cutting down on Amazon since. Research on it, then buy directly from the small business, coop of farms. or have local grocery store delivery. Every $1.00 we choose to give her, not there, adds up.

Well I will say that this topic is very interesting and it actually carries quite a lot of importance to it cuz it's only a matter of time before other retailers start following the same model I mean I have already seen this to a degree and what I mean is not necessarily $7 for one apple three dollars and something if you buy four I have seen that example at lower prices where an item will be $3 by itself but you could get it for $1.80 if you agreed to buy four of the product sometimes in the uppers of 250 and a single costing $3.25 so that format exists practically everywhere it's just a matter of whole foods has managed to go higher on that price and of course that's worrisome because that means that it's only a matter of time before Kroger or even Walmart decides they can do pretty much the same thing even if they're cheaper at doing it that's what they're going to move to basically everything is kind of going the way of a bundle. And of course bundling products Is not A New concept I mean most stores nowadays even the dollar store when they have a two for five offer it used to be that you didn't have to buy two of them to get the discount you could just purchase one at 2:50 and move on but now everywhere including the dollar stores are making an abundantly clear did in order to get the discount you have to buy two of them you don't have a choice. And gone are the days of buy one get one free you know now it's pretty much buy one and then we'll sell you the other at half cost if they even have such a deal anymore that's something I haven't seen around in quite some time honestly but I can still say that I won't get one free is gone that no longer exists. I will say that some shit went down in late 2016 basically the fall and winter of 2016 it's when the grocery industry really started to get Goofy and it was to the point where a lot of independent retailers folded up they didn't want to deal with what was coming somehow they were basically tipped off I mean that's probably a comment all its own but they saw something coming for the coming year and thereafter and many of these independent joints decided they're definitely closing before even Christmas season. And that all went down in 2016 and then ever since it's basically been Walmart's in Kroger and ALDI fighting over market share with other grocery chains such as Meijer hardly making it on to the chart for comparison. Write something big is going on at food distribution it's not really the stories themselves see that's the thing everybody focuses on the companies but they never bother to really focus on what's behind the company in terms of who their suppliers are now to be fair it is true that a lot of change deal with a lot of the same suppliers on a lot of different goods but it's also true that you have regional suppliers so there's a company called hackney it is a supplier of many things but they're very regional meaning you go to the west side of Mississippi if you won't be dealing with hackney. Wholesalers which are the suppliers otherwise known as middleman they have to sell at a high volume to make it worth their while if sales drop then they face eliminating certain products which that's already occurred throughout 2020 through 2022 but there's also a situation where they then will raise prices on everything else to make up the difference and then of course this forces you retailer to raise prices so I have no idea who the suppliers that Amazon would be dealing with for food products particularly fruit so it could be that something went haywire with their supply and they decided to charge more rather than discontinue that product and find another product to put in its place it could be a regional problem. This is why I say this could easily spill over into other retailers of course I will say that if you go to a store like save a lot and you try to buy fruits vegetables you will pay a considerable market in comparison to say Aldi grocery or even Walmart or Kroger Kroger being highest Walmart being about middle position and all the most of the time maintain Louis prices but there's also preference some people refuse to buy anything at all because there's snobby assholes some people refuse to buy anything at Save-A-Lot same reason they're just assholes those are the people that are going to suffer the most because they continuously shop at high price stores basically you would argue the same thing when it comes to the hardcore fans of whole foods of course where a lot of these whole foods are located at I can't guarantee that the prices down the street at the supposed cheaper store are somewhere on par with the prices at whole foods let's face it you go to place like Los Angeles I don't necessarily think the Walmart is going to be very much cheaper than what the whole foods around the corner will be yeah it'll probably be some amount cheaper but how much cheaper are we talking are we talking 36 cents maybe $1.25? A lot of places face that it's like the other night I was at Walmart and I checked out there meet selection another customer was standing there and I said boy there's just bullshit prices he's like yeah you got that right I said I think I'll just hold off and save A lot the next day which is today because the prices are cheaper he said yeah I wish I could but this place is so close to home and I was like well that's where they get you. In most cases these places charged with a charge simply because it's convenient if a store finds out that most of the area does not drive cars and has no ability to really go anywhere then they set up shop to price gouge the shit out of these people especially if the area is heavily saturated with food stamps.

Well, we grow a small specialty crop for a Houston area store. The way small farmers do things is a lot of work. You can't grow something like corn, a crop that gets undercut by the big growers you have to grow something rare and sell to small stores, which are also rare. The big growers work hard.. but it's not the same as we small homesteaders do. Small homesteaders are people who literally do not have enough time in their day and don't stop until the sun sets. Big growers, They have massive equipment and only run it through the crops on assigned days. That being said, even the big growers sometimes have to diversify or work a job elsewhere to achieve their financial goals because they sell the crop super cheap considering the massive investment they laid out. I'm amazed they still do it.

This is one of many reasons why we researched for a decade to find an affordable, peaceful place for retirement. We’re certainly not wealthy people and certainly couldn’t afford to retire back in Sonoma County, California. We ultimately decided to retire in Belize, Central America right on the Caribbean Sea, and you can find lots of locally grown produce here for much less money than back in the United States. There’s absolutely zero corporate fast food restaurants, but shopping centers, no corporate movie theaters, no traffic, no sirens, no road raging drivers no mass shooters, and it’s extremely multicultural here with lots of natural, beautiful surroundings. Well you're not really making your own pizza. You admittedly bought the crust rather than making which is actually not hard to do at all. Well most of this got started back in late 16th and I can remember that there was definitely something that was going on in the grocery market at that time as we had a lot of Independent grocers who pulled the plug and pulled up some of which admitted that they are profitable and that they can foresee profits going forward but for whatever reason they pulled out I think that they were kind of tipped off is to where the supply chain problems are going to get worse and perhaps many of their customers work prepared to pay the price and a lot of those chains had built themselves on cheaper prices that even Aldi never regional change so I don't very seriously very many of you even heard of them. My family's favorite that was located in Heath Ohio was festival foods they had a location of Lancaster and I think they had a couple other locations towards Columbus they at one time were actually a bit of a growing chain they were actually looking at expansion and they did a hell of a good business they had their own distribution and everything but one thing led to another in the wonkiness of 2016 and they folded up they pulled the plug they made it a point to go out of business before Christmas of that year while at the same time that fall and winter Kroger in Walmart was battling with Aldi grocery Aldi being basically the best but even all three of those companies were experiencing and at the time I couldn't really figure out exactly what it was but I had figured that it was something behind the scenes in terms of supply so I think what happened was a lot of these guys got tipped off that the shipping costs and everything else are going to go out so I do believe that some of it may have actually even been tipped off about problems that will rise in 2020 they may not have been totally tipped off about the Rona bullshit but I think that they knew that there was going to be a supply chain issue and even though they could have stayed at business a bit longer and made profits the proprietors of those businesses decided they're done they didn't want to deal with it. It was interesting because Jeff bezos was interviewed in May of 2016 when it was presented to him that Amazon and other online retailers are killing brick mortar he basically cracked up laughing saying that's not possible simply because online retail only makes up 8 to 10% of all retail sales meaning that's where they were really studying and getting ready to watch brick and mortar stores but like I said everything changed when the other side of Summer happened not just for Amazon but for many other companies. And what exactly that change was to this day I don't know I'm going to say that it's probably logistics it's probably something to do with whatever the suppliers are able to get at whatever price and then of course the shipping costs because we all know in business it cost more to run the back of the store than it does to run the front end of the store. So I think they canceled a lot of those stores knowing that where they're going to build even though right that minute the income might have held out they weren't sure that the incomes weren't going to drop in those areas given but the incomes were dropping across the board anyway I mean there's been a huge income to fish the population for well over a decade eventually you have to accept reality and realize it's not really profitable to go around opening up stores when everybody else is closing stores there is a small window in time when your competitors wave bye-bye that you may be able to go in there and fill the gap but the problem is simply that if the trouble isn't just on the executives desks of those competitors you know if you're there bad decision but it's a combination of their bad decisions met with an income deficiency across the population you don't really stand a chance of course I will say that most retailers have gotten themselves in trouble because of all the debt they've taken on Amazon is not necessarily immune today and I think that when they took a look at how much debt they were going to have to have in order to fully expand these kinds I think they decided it was better to cancel the weight and study the markets and see perhaps where it does go the bottom line is I would say that most of those executives included is probably waiting for everything what they've really got to work with I mean people are going homeless every day and that is one sector of the population that is expanding but we haven't seen the worst of it yet in other words we have yet to see the bottom of any market and I would say that that is also throwing us into a time of stagnation did it becomes where companies are just trying to maintain what they have that also means that they're going to close locations and they're going to try and focus on what they have versus expansion they can't really do expansion and be profitable here's the problem without the growth you basically get stagnation and the other problem is stagnation can feel rather safe to a lot of these executive types because you're not really growing but you're not really lose you're just kind of there and it's a very least it allows you to maintain. Of course this is a problem because that means that they get comfortable in that position so when the growth starts happening again and you start really getting into fierce competition they may not know how to get off their ass and actually compete and then that does mean that they are going to wave bye-bye somewhere in the future they will burn through billions of dollars trying to get back to the status they once were but they'll never be able to get there. Basically Walmart has the same problem with all the debt that they're in this is why last year they had a higher increase and they're not quite out of it yet.

Well their price hikes yeah I'll tell you that's ridiculous and I think they're just price gouging people for the time being however it may also end up being Canary coal mine chains may fall asleep soon trajectory of high prices well we've been on that trajectory for well over a decade dare I say 18 years and with each passing year it gets worse and worse now before anybody decides to type out how 10 years ago everything was better let me assure you that people 10 years ago was also bitching about price hikes granted those price hikes were perhaps cheaper and they weren't maybe as frequent as they are today but I can assure you that last decade everybody was grumbling. I know that because I was on the front lines you don't think that I didn't hear customers bitch about prices in fact I remember numerous times store help and customers would get together in a big bitch fest about prices by the way that still happens. But I can tell you that something very odd went down basically it was the fall and winter of 2016 we had a lot of regional grocery stores I live in Ohio but we had a lot of local and regional grocery stores fold up out of the blue they gave numerous reasons but something wasn't right and then at the same time it was like Kroger in Walmart also had come under fire mean well all the grocery was kicking the shit out of both of them Meyer well they were trying to get beat out on prices as well and it was to the point where they didn't even chart for the examples of gift they were not on the list in most accounts of what was going on in the grocery market at the time. I mentioned that because that's really where all of this got started with crazy prices and a lot of the inflation that you see today it went down literally the latter half of 2016 and it's been nuts ever since to the point to where a lot of the Independent grocers a lot of them really came out and admitted that they were making money but they said that the profitability in the long term wasn't there. So some of them basically admitted that they were profitable and they expected that they could go on being profitable for a number of years but they were uncertain what happens beyond the forecast that they have given their business and a lot of them they just wanted out right now and so that's what happened and some of these regional grocers had pretty decent size distribution networks. But I was suspicious that something was going on on supply side as to why most of those guys folded up I think they got a tip off about what was coming in terms of the goods that would be available from what suppliers they would be available from and where a lot of the prices were heading and especially shipping costs. I mean dare I say that it's possible that even clear back in 16th these guys were forewarned about 2020 well we can debate that all day but I will say that basically what became fully realized that 2020 was already at work way before when it comes to retail. You know it's like they talk about the shipping issues and the loss of a lot of shipping companies well what they don't really care to talk about is how we lost over 150 trucking companies between 18 and 19 alone so that's what played out in 2020 frankly that's what the industry is still dealing people still have a few dollars at least you can point to a certain percentage of the population that still has a little bit of money that they would like to spend so there is still somewhat some demand out there the problem is being able to keep up with demand and I'm afraid the logistical systems have failed they don't really have the logistics to continue to support what market exists and or they're barely able to cope let alone think that we can turn this ship around and talk about expansion of the retail trade you need shipping and you're going to need a lot more of it than what we have today here's the deal there's no investors anywhere that's clamoring to start up shipping companies no one is interested. Basically what you have is a grab bag of Independence and what few shipping companies remain the independent truck drivers particularly the over the road guys a lot of them are walking out droves they're not getting the money per miles it they either think they ought to have or is it frankly they really should be paid your assessment of that will vary because I will say that there are some truckers that believe they should be getting no less than $4 a mile whereas there's more modest truckers that leave they should be given at least a dollar 25 to a buck 56 a mile so that opinion will vary and that opinion will vary even amongst the independent truckers depending upon where they live and what they're trying to pay for in their lives. The bottom line is the money is not there they're not very enticed of course I will say that they've basically devalued pretty much all jobs at this point there's nobody really clamoring to be a manager in a retail environment because they do not pay very well anymore some companies still offer a decent wage but most companies really don't you know the store management gig used to be 50 to 65,000 a year with the assistant manager making 3 to 5,000 less than the store manager and on the low end of that back seven or eight years ago you could say that the store manager on the low end would be paid about 45,000 the assist manager would get roughly $40,000 nowadays on the low end which everything is become the low end the store manager is getting if they're Lucky 38 to $40,000 and the assistant manager is lucky to see 32,000 a year. Basically I pretty much pay assistant manager somewhere between 1350 and maybe 1650 an hour that's pretty much the going wages they've divided the job but what's interesting about that is the store manager themselves are lucky if they see 40,000 dollars in a 7:00 to 9,000 more than the hourly assistant manager but for the most part they're getting paid shit is the overall conclusion how is this structure viable when the delivery man makes $100,000 versus the store manager is getting hardly 40,000 I mean that structure in society does not work. Of course you have those who bitch that the burger flipper should be getting but only X an hour well the problem with that is simply that only worked when there was a level of affordability to be had now that level of affordability is basically screwed for everyone this is why you have the wages so disproportionate to the position of course if anyone thinks that the burger flipper is getting 40 hours a week at $20 an hour they have rocks in their head they're not even getting 22 hours at 13.50 furthermore almost no one gets the proverbial $15 an hour that is advertised notice how the sign says up to.

Well yeah that's an argument that I don't take holds very much water today because it's not exactly that way. It is in terms of before the minimum wage hike you have all of these companies threatening that prices will go up it's a scare attack and then if minimum wage does go up oh okay so conveniently so it looks as if the prices went up because of minimum wage when in reality minimum wage was the catalyst used to raise prices AKA a fucking excuse. So a lot of these companies cry poverty they scream and holler that it's going to fuck everything up etc etc even though in a lot of cases the wage hikes could be something like 35 cents just what happened in Ohio this past year minimum wage went up 35 cents everybody pitched a bitch big deal I mean if your company is really threatened by 35 cents then you're already out of business. Of course they don't just raise the prices a little bit here and there across the store to try and make up the difference instead they will raise everything in the store and they usually go nuts the day of minimum wage only went up 35 cents yet they'll take 10 items and raise them up a dollar each why they really need to do that. There's also a major situation to where they holler property they cry that it's going through with it but I've noticed how not one of these fucking people companies business owners whatever have bothered to open their books and show everybody that that's really the case they cry all this poverty notice how they do not bother to prove 3/4 of their case show me a p&l state which for those who don't know that's profit loss I want to see a profit loss state can you separate that out into the past 6 months per se to narrow down exactly what you really are doing maybe give us a bigger graph have it busted up into increments of 6 months for the past 2 years show us exactly that that's your position that you really will be ruined. But they won't do it they'll just get on there and holler about they'll scream about it till they're blue and fix but they will not actually produce their case which tells me they're full of shit it's not actually hurting their bottom line that they can basically afford that race they're just using it as an excuse to jack a price is because that's what they threat the public with.
