For everyone: the word "dead" in e-commerce on KZbin means a lot more competitive with possibly lower margins.

Ah stop scaring people for no reason dude. Sounds like your the type of people who want all the piece of the pie for himself. If you build a brand on Amazon you won't have to worry about most of the things he's brought up, this dude just full of negative lol the only people losing out are the ones who actually don't take actions and just watch videos like this.
@WatchMeAmazon6 жыл бұрын
Curious Wilf couldn’t be more wrong. I spent the last year and a half helping hundreds of sellers. Instead of talking about me “keeping the pie” (which is silly cuz I don’t even do private label) tell me what I said that is actually wrong
@RICHIRICH4086 жыл бұрын

@heyoou6 жыл бұрын
You are so way wrong on a lot of things. Some truth to what you're saying but there are a lot of grey areas. Like any business, competition is everywhere. Restaurants, gyms, shoe stores, cell phones, etc...why do those smaller co's still stay in business. Because the piece of the pie is there. It's not as big a piece as let's say Nike, Mcdonald's, etc... but you always get a slice. The slice of the pie depends on your skill, work ethic, creativity, and time management. What you are saying is nobody can make tons of money like the big corporations but believe me you can make tons more than working in a 9 to 5 job. I sell in a very saturated category and still make more than I expected. The trick is to build your inventory, brand, research, create, and be as professional as can be, no short cuts, and you make a very good living.
@WatchMeAmazon6 жыл бұрын
Paolo Facciolo that’s not what all what I’m saying. Anyone can make that money. What I was saying was it was way easier to do it months ago. New rules and situations make it much harder to launch now whether you’re a big or small seller. Again, not impossible and ppl can clearly do it - but the old way it was done is dead. Much much harder now, and new sellers need to adapt. That’s what I’m saying
@heyoou6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100% with everything you said. But the tone of your video is said in a way like ppl who want to start a business on Amazon or are already making a living on it are going to fail because of the changes and the market being saturated. That I don't agree with it. For example, many of the chinese sellers have terrible listings even though they sell at a cheaper price. Me, when I see their listings, would not want to buy from them because, me let's say as a buyer, would think that they are selling me an inferior product compared to the seller who marked it up a little higher with a better sales strategy. There are still many opportunities on Amazon, the thing is you have to do the work in research, quality listing, PPC campaigns, and the most important but overlooked is CREATIVITY, etc. You don't just create a listing, sit back and expect to get rich. This is how I see it. Years ago that same product, if you know what you're doing, made you $10K/MONTH. Now what's happening is because it's saturated, that same product will make you $5k or $6k/month. You're still making $$$, you just have to work more like you said but you definitely can make money. You see that's the problem with society in general. The ppl who fail on Amazon are the same ppl who fail when they want to lose weight. They see the latest exercise equipment and they buy into the ad or commercial with the sculpted actor that in 60 days they are guaranteed to lose 30 pounds. Their expectations are not met because it takes more than equipment to lose weight and they fail and give up. For me, the changes Amazon made with incentivised reviews and taking latest 1 year feedback period instead of many years is finally overdue. Shake it up and make it more of a level playing field. Too many sellers pay family members and friends to give dishonest reviews. Amazon has to do an ongoing cleanup of these sellers going forward. Amazon is finally waking up and taking ethics over $$$. You also said it was a lot easier, yes, but that's putting it in a way that makes it appear that the glass is half empty. Nothing that you really want is easy. I say, learn, adapt,work hard, create, and the glass is half full.
@ronsouther5 жыл бұрын
There should be a barrier to overcome before someone can leave a negative review. For example, if the customer never contacted the buyer before leaving the bad review, that should be forbidden. Too many bad reviews talk about a damage product or something not related to the performance of the product, and the seller likely would’ve offered a fix. Contacting the seller first before leaving let’s say a 1 or 2 star review would make it impossible to leave a back mark out of emotions or spite to some degree.

People focusing on junk-generic products knew from day 1 that they were not aiming for the long run... They were hacking the system for relatively temporary gain. Now the temporary comes to an end. Focusing on ethical-long run strategies will always pay off, be it in Amazon or any other domain ... It's not a Product Label nor Amazon issue, it's a mentality issue on the sellers' end...

There has definitely been a lot of changes but Private Label is still very profitable if you do it correctly and not copy what everyone else sells and teach, this stopped being profitable 1-2 years ago on amazon.com and 6 moths ago on amazon uk. As a seller who sells on amazon us uk and all the Eu marketplaces I can honestly tell you that amazon us has the most volume but least profit. Amazon Germany and UK are the most profitable for Private Label today. Good honest video man and you are speaking the truth from your own point of view which is great 👍

I honestly enjoyed watching that, i am only undertaking the training and research to see how i can eventually start selling on amazon. I was impressed to find a video that is not just promoting the Glamorous side of Amazon selling but, informative and open, and giving us the dark side that is business. i will now go in with my eyes open and without any delusions of grandeur that i will launch a product and become an instant millionaire. Thanks so much for the info, the only criticism i would give on this video is that i came out feeling like you were angry about something. But that's my opinion i don't know you that much, and maybe that is just the way your delivery is. maybe next time a little less emotion may help. it was a powerful message, but the emotion could have easily ruined it by taking the message away and giving ammunition to your critics. If you build a brand, like through a website, Instagram, KZbin etc. Get a following, then create products related to your brand. Using made in the USA, Europe, etc.labels, you can still do very well. Just creating some generic private label, throwing up products based on price and trying to compete with Chinese manufacturers is a fool's errand, a mug's game....Your video is spot on...The good news is, this weeds out a lot of FBA quick buck "4 hour work week" hustlers and short termers.

Regarding listing hijacking: i just contacted amazon and spoke to a rep about that. I asked does it really happen since no one can have access to my account but me? He explained that although rare, it can happen and then only people that CAN do that are amazon workers because only they have access to our account details but that also they have online security agents working to detect such activities and handle it. Also, if the dirty sellers can hire agencies or pay real people to leave negative reviews, why can't the authentic seller do the same in return? Hire real people and agencies to put positive reviews without going overboard of course (as per your example of the Aveeno brand)?

There are around 150,000 Chinese factory sellers on Amazon. And the number is growing. They are also building up the facilities overseas, to offer better products and better customer services. They are competing with each other, small and medium sellers who does not have production facility or offer any value to the end customer are just collateral damage...
@richiea79955 жыл бұрын
True, this happens to marketplaces in my country, located in South East Asia. Profit margin becomes lower and lower ever since the Chinese manufacturers also started to sell in the marketplace. So what we do is we market high-quality product from the local manufacturer. Even if we sell an item from Chinese manufacturer we will rather go to a high-end product and keep up with current trending. Competition is fierce than ever.

Reviews are more for social proof. Reviews do not play much into the Amazon algorithm as it has most to do with sales percent compared to visits to your product. Low reviews drop the sales which is why it look like reviews weigh into the algorithm. I am doing wholesale and private label but my private label is going to be a brand outside of Amazon and its an area that I am passionate about and want to build a business around. You are correct that the quick buck on Amazon is gone but private label has been in existence forever and is not going anywhere its just now you need to treat this like a real business and the fly by night sellers are failing which makes the opportunity for a real business even better.
@WatchMeAmazon6 жыл бұрын
Entrepreneur Adventure I would disagree that reviews don’t factor into algorithm rank. A good ranked product will lose sales and velocity as soon as ratings dip on the product. That’s a clear indicator it effects it

I can only see this as an advantage. Don't go for fake reviews. Plenty of other white hat launching strategies out there. --> Reviews itself dont rank or drop your product in the AMZ algohorithm, it's the conversion rate that's at stake here. --> Fluctuations in rankings: yes for sure, especially in the first months. --> More work is required: lol. Off course. In my opinion this is just a video explaining the things you encounter when private labeling. And then promoting your own way (wholesale selling) instead. You could make a video of wholesale is dead as well. ''Its really hard winning the buy box now'' for example, leaving you with an unsteady flow of sales. Competition is so high and the chance of running into a price war is really high. etc etc. etc. Private labeling is still very profitable if you do it RIGHT. Not copycat everyone else! Spend a lot of time on differentiation and boom. I get much higher profit margins than the 20% you are aiming for.

I think it can still be done but you need time and you need to be extremely smart and experienced. There's so many moving parts to PL. I've been learning and attempting PL for over a year and a half. Things change so quickly that I don't have the mental capacity to get creative and keep up like some people. Sometimes we need a reality check and know when to check out. I think it's time to go back to local brick and mortars business which, unfortunately, takes a lot more capital, risk, and is much more long tail before seeing any profit.

Thank you for your honest, and frank commentary on this. So what you are saying is that this is an actual business now, and everyone better get a good office chair and coffee pot. I think this is still a great business model. I'm actually kind of happy that its normalizing into an actual retail business. Ecommerce is most definitely the future, but it's sadly been looking like a get rich quick scheme. Once again thank you for your insight my friend.

Hard to argue with any of this. Good stuff man! I grew up in the wholesale business. Started 10 years ago. I've had a front seat view to all the changes over the years and all the "gurus" that have come and gone with techniques/hacks to make millions. Now I'm consulting and seeing a whole new side of the game from the brands perspective. While I think the wholesale model is still viable and I recommend this for most beginners... I do see lots of changes coming on that front as well. It used to be easy to find existing listings that were selling well that amazon.com wasn't already selling and piggy back on the wave with little to no effort. You just needed to find the product, build a relationship with the brand or supplier, negotiate on price, handle your operations, and understand the financials...and you could build a successful business relatively easily and quickly. Nowadays most new brands are selling direct to consumer or Amazon is catching them early in the game and convincing them to sell to them as a vendor. I think the future of the wholesale model will involve identifying brands with little to no presence on amazon. Convince these brands to partner up and/or potentially sign exclusivity agreements, then launch their products brand new on the platform. This will involve a lot more skill in the sales/marketing areas which used to be non-important in wholesale. That's just my 2 cents on where I see it headed. Curious to hear your thoughts? I've had brands contact me to consult and they told me they were using fake seller names so their 3rd party sellers didn't know they were planning to sell direct on Amazon. When a company understands the potential money they could be making, it changes their perspective real quickly.
@ElizabethGalarza16 жыл бұрын
Coach Mearls That was exactly what my question was going to be. Why the manufacturers would avoid selling directly in Amazon or directly to Amazon? I'm learning this business and I'm about to decide which direction to go. After watching different videos and opinions I think that the best way to start is creating a good quality product preferably made in the USA and build a brand around it which will take time and hard work. After watching this video I think it's a good idea to see if I can find a product to wholesale, not making it my primary business. I also think that it's imperative to reach other markets outside the USA. Am I right or wrong?, I'll appreciate your opinion
@mattearls24166 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth G I’ll start by saying there’s no right or wrong. People have made money with wholesale, PL, drop shipping, handmade, merch by amazon, arbitrage, etc. Everyone has an opinion on which is best but really all of them can work. I personally believe wholesale and PL are the best options for long term success. I’d recommend a hybrid approach. Start in wholesale. Learn your market. Build your brand. Gain some customers. Then look to PL within that market. Wholesale can be very frustrating you’ll have to be patient.

You can't beat good ole fashion hard in any business be it online or traditional. I am moving into the E-Commerce space and there is still a huge amount of growth in this space. Like any new platform, E-commerce is correcting itself and all the get rich quick crowd and short-term so-called business people will fall to the wayside. I do agree with you in terms of building a brand instead of a copycat product and looking to make hundreds of thousands and even millions will require HARD WORK! Private Label can make you very profitable if you put in the HARD WORK and grind like any real business. I know business owners on Amazon who is doing PL and are killing it because they grind and don't cut corners. So yes, PL is dead if you're looking to make quick money and not grind. Put in the work and you will succeed, period. Cheers

@enerzise31615 жыл бұрын
It appears some people did not watch the whole video before throwing stones. The video is very honest and covered topics I thought about over the last couple weeks of research. The ending statements touch on what I was thinking. Pick a product line with demand, design a product line off from that, make sure it is a product line that is least likely to have cut throat competition and make sure the finished product is A grade. No crooked lines or stripes, the paint is smooth and glassy looking, have a catchy but not corny product line label name and consider advertising some in magazines and to national clubs related to the product line. It is not necessarily about trying to sell a product but getting perspective shoppers to buy the idea mentally that the product is different, interesting, fun and fits in with their interest. For the product line I am looking at that is. The end result is selling products and the buyers being happy they purchased them. Then use the profits to diversify and increase the line throughout the year, so it keeps longevity. Old School advertising still works and making trips to guest speak at clubs and setting up a KZbin channel and Facebook to do drawings for giveaways. These are ways to make sure people are telling family and friends and word of mouth is spreading independently of Amazon. We are not just talking about selling on Amazon but also selling from our own online store from Go Daddy and hitting flea markets on week ends and doing trade shows. Those things are not work to us as they are actually a blast and offer traveling to places worthy of vacation time anyways. I would say this video is a thumbs up. It did not appear to be fear-mongering but a good assessment.

The new amazon rules about insentivized reviews is actually a good thing for new sellers, FBA is dead for cheats who rely on friends and families to get reviews, the Chinese competition is not as big as you make it sound. I think you just want to be different with this video to be noticed. That's all.
@steveduncan60735 жыл бұрын
Amazon potentially has a very serious problem. They built a business sponsoring sellers without paying attention to what they were selling, relying on reviews and the market to maintain order. When some sellers did some very serious cheating, Amazon lashed out blindly, punishing good as well as bad. And not protecting good. Who wants a business vulnerable to ruthless and unfair persecution? If Amazon becomes unsafe, good sellers will bail. Amazon will turn into a junkheap. Amazon needs to see that good sellers will be safe and profitable, while bad guys will be punished. Else their business model collapses. Amazon may be profitable now, but if their behaviour is as bad as it seems, that could change - fast.

The reason for this is because cheap products make a cheap company. You have to think about the future of the company. Amazon does not want to be known as Alibaba. If 90% of their sellers are selling cheap products from China in time customers will seek out other online venues to buy from rather than Amazon. A lot of people are trying to make a quick and scammy type business vs working hard and building a solid brand.
@Dannybperez6 жыл бұрын
That's Great that’s why I always recommend sampling and inspecting products if you do source from alibaba. I’ve been able to source high quality products but you have to really search for a great supplier!
@ComeHereGreatness6 жыл бұрын
Danny B. Perez People always ask what's a good product to sell. In my opinion anything will sell only "if" the product has good quality. For example, if I gave you two choices to choose from 1. Paper Business Card OR 2. Magnet business Card 9 out of 10 people will choose the magnet because its actually useful for more than collecting dust. This concept works the same way with selling a product to consumers. Who wants old lettuce? Not me.
@Dannybperez6 жыл бұрын
That's Great i I totally agree with you brother. A big reason why people fail in PL is because they don’t put the effort required to create a quality product. I’m just saying I’ve been able sell as private label seller but had to put in effort to put out an actual quality product

Private labeling isn't dead, it's just changing. It existed because Amazon was born (let alone its marketplace) and it will survive Amazon. incentivised reviews were banned 2 years ago and everything that has happened since then has been highly predictable. Amazon PL is not deader today than it was 2 years ago and frankly, the changes are going in the right direction. It will weed out the amateurs and the ones looking to make a quick buck. If you're not in that category and you are in it for the long term, nothing has changed, keep plowing ahead. In fact things are improving. The only major downside I see is that an increasing amount of capital will be needed to scale and compete. Perhaps a little more patience too. What I do agree with is that the days of considering Amazon PL products like stocks to buy for the short term and to dump when Jungle Scout has driven too much interest towards the niche it's at are over. that's not a bad thing in my opinion.

_"amazon still beats Shopify for brand building"_ At the beginning perhaps. For slightly more mature PL brands, I'm not so sure. For instance, virtually no one will buy your business for more that 2 years worth of earnings if you just sell on amazon because of the single point of failure that it presents. The amazon model makes you an amazon supplier in disguise and the valuation of your company and the brands it supports will be valued accordingly.

In the book Think And Grow Rich, this is what is called “The Mastermind”. It’s when a group of people with the same interest join together to share the same an opposing views in order to birth something fresh and new that the other may not have thought of. Do you think it’s fair to give an HONEST review on something that you have not experienced first-hand?

Eventually I will soon be entering the world of Amazon FBA as primarily a private label: however, in my experience in business, if you stay focused and take the time to create or find a quality product, willing to really grow your business and a solid gold reputation, offer impeccable customer service innovative product promotions via social media, and willing to do what's never been done before, it will eventually take you where you dream of being . In my opinion it doesn't matter how saturated a market is-I believe that if you build it GREAT they will come. There are millions of restaurants all over the world and many more that have come and gone. However, the ones who are still standing, generation after generation, are the ones who offer AMAZING and unique products in the form of food! Your video is enlightening which I'm glad it evoked a comment about the countries that really embrace private labels. If I should decide to do whole selling as well, I gladly look into what your offering before going further with it. Thanks!
