Amazon's Lord of the Rings a Giant, Global DISASTER

It's time to consider that Amazon's Lord of the Rings could be a massive billion dollar disaster. Fist off, this story represents everything Hollywood hates right now. How can you make a faithful of anything Tolkien in the current entertainment industry? Amazon keeps planting red flap after red flag and they seem insistent on repeating the mistakes of their fellow repurposes. Hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't look good.

This isn't about convincing longtime fans and their normie friends that woke adaptations are good. It's about indoctrinating an up-and-coming generation of impressionable minds that won't know anything else but these versions of the stories. They'll turn these kids against their families, as they've already done with so many kids now, and eventually they will outnumber people like us. It's not about money to them. It's about changing the world by subverting the culture. It's about power.

Right on, sir! The devil has no original ideas. It's why they called the devil "God's ape" in the middle ages. The orcs origins come out of Tolkien's Christian worldview, specifically Catholic in his case. The other great fantasy novel drawing on this logic of good and evil is Dracula, which, though Stoker was Protestant, also drew heavily from Tolkien's Catholicism.

Tolkien is anti-racism: - he insisted on using Celtic languages when people at the time were racist on the Irish. - the whole "don't underestimate a hobbit" theme is obviously anti-racism. - and then there's Aragorn's interracial love. - the most "well-bred" race in the lore is the most vile. Attacking Tolkien is not anti-racism but anti-white, which is ironically racist.
@mirceazaharia2094
@mirceazaharia2094 3 жыл бұрын
@@culturecanvas777 "Don't underestimate a hobbit" does not fit with antiracism in this case. The hobbits are the common folk of England, in this case, the rural country folk. Simple, but not stupid, peace-loving, farmers, craftsmen, honest, hard-working, earnest, with a love for the land that they inhabit and work, with a courage that is modest and sincere. It's more anti-classist if anything, eager to honor the dignity and courage of the kind of people he grew up around, and fought alongside with in World War One.

Christopher Tolkien would have begged to differ I think. The Jackson LOTR film trilogy may be well liked but it does not hold true to Tolkien's perspective and it was already beginning Hollywood participation correction by putting Arwen in place of Glorfindel when taking Frodo to Rivendell past the Nazgul - Hobbit was worse still by adding a completely new character just to increase female participation in that trilogy. For all the bitching this channel is doing about Amazon GoTifying the LOTR series.... well.... jackson kinda already started down that slippery slope - the films are not what Tolkien intended, while the Hobbit trilogy is a complete clusterfuck of the novel and then some.
@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 3 жыл бұрын
@@LaffinKing "They just want more money and disguise it as trying to reach a 'broad' audience." You are seeing shadows and calling them real people there. They do indeed want more money. The problem is that in order to inform how to do that they use focus groups mainly in the US in mainly affluent regions and infer from that how people with similar ethnic backgrounds across the world will react to the material that they are seeing. They don't do this because they think it works, they do it because truly accurately multinational focus groups across multiple ethnicities, financial backgrounds, age groups and genders is extremely difficult to organize. Therefore it is expensive. So basically for the sake of making more money they are using cheap, highly inaccurate focus groups that simply do not work. This is why Disney Star Wars was falling flat on its face in China - inferring what will please the Chinese audience in total from affluent Asians in mostly the US without properly even discussing it with the Chinese govmt to see what buttons not to push in order to keep it from getting shitcanned in record time.

@@DaveMiller2 Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on the changes made from the books to the films. They certainly exist, and I absolutely despised most of them. However, Jackson specifically stated in that clip that they intended to keep the _themes_ Tolkien introduced / conveyed rather than they didn't want to change specific scenes or plot elements. "We didn't want to put any of our own, certainly in terms of the thematic material, we didn't want to put any of our baggage...I mean, we had no interest in putting any of our messages into this movie." His comment certainly didn't explicitly state, or even imply, that they had no intention to change specific scenes or plot elements. Of all the things you mentioned in your list (all of which I agree were unnecessary / bad changes), the only altered theme is the repeated insistence that Men are weak. And that's essentially the only theme that drastically changed.

Those movoes would have never ever been made as well as they were if they tried to make them now. There were so many times where I thought... they'd mess this scene up or they would try to force some agenda here or they would pointlessly make this character a POC or woman for no reason other than white self hate or they would write this poorly.... etc etc... At the moment Hollywood looks at beloved franchises as first and foremost a vehicle to push wokeness. I feel many people producing these shows love inflicting psychological games on conservative minded people. They love fucking up franchises.they like getting people’s hopes up and then destroying the franchises and characters they think fondly of right in front of their face-just like what they done with Star Wars. I think it’s important to turn ur back on anything these bastards come out with and when u do that they lose, but when u let them disappoint u and demoralise u even a little bit- they win.

The merchandise sales have nosedived ages ago with the shit there producing then they come out with the laughable high republic! My point is pushing woke garbage is their number 1 priority. Middle Eastern here. There's a huge LOTR fandom in Turkey. HUGE. I've never heard of anyone say they can't see themselves in the stories and that they felt left out. No, they love the lore and the characters on their own merit. I adored the hobbits and their life in the Shire not because I saw myself mirrored in them, but because the setting, the land and the myth felt alive. Like somewhere you wished could be real, people you could meet. Aragorn being the hidden heir to a hopeless country of Men under threat from the Shadow still moved us deeply, still became our favoured mythology despite us not being English. It felt universal in its appeal and it never occured to me, or anyone I know that I should look for a direct analogue to myself and my friends and pitch a fit if I didn't find any.

How can the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. I have thought about this a bit. We are in a period akin to visual art the Middle Ages, where people literally lost perspective. Ever wonder why the king or Jesus is way larger than the common people? Because art was subject to the political rules of the day. You have to make the most important person the biggest and put allegorical objects floating around for no reason, and label shit right in the picture like a cartoon so no one gets confused about the message. TBH, that's what Hollywood has always done. The studios never respected authors. That's why 95% of 'adaptations' have been so divorced from the source material to be something completely different. And that's been going on long before the woke era. There are a ton of movies based off Philip K Dick's books, but none of them are close to the books (because he wrote stories about severely flawed people who often don't do the right thing and they rarely have the Hollywood happy ending)

@@KennaDeMerkedo The worse thing they did in my opinion is simplify the villains. Nilfgaard is just a bunch of religious fanatics who owe their entire success to Fringilla Vigo, who in this version was sent from the North, and isn't even from Nilfgaard. And she really drank the coolaid and became a fanatic who is pure evil. Cahir is a fucking psycho who I don't see them believably redeeming. In the books he was a good man fighting for the wrong side. Oh and Vilgefortz is a weak little bitch. He gets the shit kicked out of him by Cahir and the actor just doesn't sell the role. Vilgefortz in the books is fucking unsettling at the best of times. In this portrayal he's just some random forgettable sorcerer. You wouldn't even think he's important except he randomly kills an ally in the final battle just so the audience goes "oh he's evil I'm supposed to pay attention to him". Emyr also feels like a miscast. He again just comes off as some guy during the betrothal feast as Cintra. They still do the whole curse thing but at no point does the actor really establish a solid presence. In the books Duny was someone to remember. Sick of hearing this, it would be filled with alt-right trash if that was the more accepted social norm. The 'woke' shoehorned garbage is not itself the problem, it is the fact of creative bankruptcy and so the they are just filling the void with whatever is more acceptable in their circles. Heck, most of what you call 'woke' has always been there and was never a problem before because it was subtle and sprinkled into the background of the story often implied in times of brevity. The problem is that is that it now holds the place of plot and character because they are running out of ideas at this point. And that is also due to how audiences consume media today where if something isn't 'original' enough they will blast it for being cliche or rehashing an old trope. So they have run out of creativity but also too scared to try and please an overtly critical audience and so instead look to please employers and those within Hollywood and high society. I don't blame them really as just look at KZbin content and you will see people have clearly taken to favouring a negative response at any oppurtunity, and they try more than I would care to please such people. Pleasing their boss and socialites at least has benefits, tell me what pleasing you gets them especially when figures show you will probably still watch it if only to make memes and have detail to bag on.

I find myself identifying with the characters in Blade, in Black Panther, in Mulan, in Gilgamesh, in Muana, and a whole host of stories that speak not to the race, the sex, or the "identity" of the characters, but to the common struggles of all humanity.

This. Had this discussion with a friend last week about that actually. We were born in the 80's and movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Alien, Predator(which had a great diverse cast...but this diversification was never mentioned..they were just bad ass and that's it), Blade (it was in the 90's but the argument still stands), Lethal Weapon, Demolition Man, etc were just enjoyable, plain and simple, regardless of the race, gender, etc We liked Beverly Hills Cop for example, not because its lead was black, because Eddie Murphy was great and relatable. I can assure you that if a friend would've said like ''I'm not gonna watch this movie because the lead is black'' we would've probably just said like ''Get the fuck out of here you fucking moron'' lol A great story is a great story and people will appreciate it. Only ignorant people will close themselves to others. But these days, it's all about making a point and it's tiresome. When you have friends in the LBGTQ community that hate what Hollywood is doing because it separates them AGAIN from the mass because they are treated differently, to me it speaks volume.

Disney screwed up Star Wars, Benioff and Weiss vomited out Game of Thrones, Rowling self-destructed Harry Potter, Warner Bros and Snyder wrecked DC, Star Trek and Doctor Who imploded in on themselves, Disney dumbed down Pirates of the Caribbean, and now, one of the last remaining untouched franchises... corrupted by Amazon.

That's what I don't get. Asian and subcontinental countries are racist af and barely tolerate white people let alone black or LGBT people (e.g. Disney editing out the lesbian kiss, shrinking the black people on marketing material). If they want to maximise their global audience of which the two biggest countries are also two of the most racist, it would make more business sense to follow the same vein as what made it successful.

@@Mofi357 most of the Druidic lore was lost in Britain when the Romans killed the druids at holy island. The Druids passed on knowledge through speech and didn’t write things down so it was lost. And then again after 1066 the normans removed and erased much of the Anglo Saxon mythology by burning tapestries and destroying other parts of Anglo Saxon culture. As an Englishman, this is a big reason for my love of lord of the rings. It gives us something that we didn’t have before and that’s why I’m passionate and angry when I see people fucking with it.

Expert guy: "...it's a very religous book in tone and he [Tolkien] knew this while writing it. It's a book that tries to convey the feeling of religion to a world that is not actually believing world or a non-religeous world". .. it particularly appeals because it's bringing religion back onto fiction" Nerdrotic: "...now I'm not a religous person and I didn't get that out of the hobbit or the LOTR to me it was just a good story. It's certainly in the silmarillion". Tolkien: “...the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism”. I think what the nerdrotic means is he didn't get the religious parts *explicitly* because LOTR isn't allegory like C.S. Lewis's Narnia series. But the religious feeling is implicit and all pervasive in the LOTR, that's why people love it. Tolkien extracted the essence of Christianity and breathed it's lifeforce into the storybas that 'glue' that pervades, motivates and unifies the characters and plot. Thus, people love Christianity in this sense, but some tend to dislike it when it is embodied in the less than ideal nature of regular humans and institutions. "When we hear “I will take the ring”, we may think we hear pride, but when we hear “though I do not know the way”, we know we hear humility. Tolkien kept explicit religion out of The Lord of the Rings, but here is a powerful example of implicit religion. No one but an arrogant fool could do what Frodo did without throwing an anchor out into the deep of supernatural grace... ...The capacity to evoke wonder, which is the great power of fantasy, almost requires supernaturalism. It is inconceivable that a worldly pragmatist like John Dewey or Karl Marx could write fantasy. Only a supernaturalistic metaphysics has room for it. It says that our world has edges, that it is not all there is, that there is more. In such a world you can never say, with the bored, jaded author of Ecclesiastes, “I have seen everything” (Eccles 1:14)." Peter Kreeft, The Philosophy of Tolkien.
