Amazon PANICS! Deletes LOTR Fans | Rings of Power RATIOED with 1.8 Million DISLIKES?

Amazon is still DELETING comments and is clearly in PANIC mode as The Lord of the Rings backlash continues over the single worst roll out in pop culture history. The Rings of Power trailer is missing over 28,000 comments and the dislikes have descended to 1.8 million!! Could it be a KZbin "error" or could this be a much more accurate representation of how the fans really feel? One Tolkien adaptor, comic book legend Chuck Dixon, feels the same way calling The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power an ABOMINATION.
The news doesn't get any better. Looks like Amazon might be going after EVERYTHING Tolkien and the only company int heir way is Warner Bros? The enemy of my enemy is still my enemy so let's root for them both to lose.

I've said it a million times before and I'll say it a million times again: Tolkien's works (particularly _The Hobbit_ ) have been my favorite stories practically since I came out of the womb. NEVER ONCE when I was a little girl, or even a hormonally imbalanced teenage girl did I ever feel underrepresented by there being next to no (and literally none in _The Hobbit_ ) female characters. What these activists are doing is completely and utterly stupid and desecrating to Tolkien's legacy.

I’m with you, girl! Great comment. I discovered LOTR as a wide-eyed 11 year old- I saw all the hot guys with long hair in FOTR and was amazed by them and the overwhelming fantasy. Read the books and loved the integrity and intricate world-building. It’s a male-centered story and that never bothered me. How pitiful for some to sell LOTR short because unless they see an EXACT replica of themselves, they can’t emotionally connect to the battle between good and evil. 🙄

Yes. I was a voracious reader as a child. I read everything from Little Women to Anne of Green Gables to Treasure Island to LOTR to Wind in the Willows and more. How ridiculous it would have been for me as a female to ignore such wonderful stories because I couldn't identify as a mole, rat, toad or badger or because the character was male!!!!! I identified with the characters because of their struggles, their personalities, their adventures and hopes not their gender or appearance. I also watched shows like Monkey (magic) a Japanese tv series that everyone in my childhood loved. We certainly didn't look like them but that never stopped us role playing as kids or caring about the characters.

I had multiple college professors who used the Bechdel test as something legitimate. It was annoying as heck because most good stories don’t pass the Bechdel test. A big part of the reason to have male and female characters interact in stories is to introduce a romantic element, meaning the male and female must interact and that if the female has female friends, she usually talks to them about the male character because having a friend’s opinion on a guy is important. Even super empowering feminist movies like Miss Congeniality don’t tend to pass the Bechdel test. It’s a stupid test that should be treated like a joke. Bechdel herself thinks it’s a stupid test to tell if a story is good or not.
@gunkulator1
@gunkulator1 2 жыл бұрын
The Bechdel test is not a measure of goodness in any sense. As you note, it's impossible to tell a romantic story and pass the test. Does that mean all romance stories are bad? Of course not. The value of the Bechdel test is to take note of our assumptions and biases with regards to gender, especially in comparison to a reversal of gender. LOTR does not pass the test, but if you reversed the genders it would. The same can be said of the majority of non-romantic storytelling from the sci-fi, courtroom dramas, cop shows, comedies, action/adventure - you name it. When we reach for characters to populate these stories, we tend to lean heavily towards male characters. It's a bias, but not a conscious one since I don't think most people are actively sexist. Doesn't make these stories bad but I think we can all agree that gender biases are not a good thing.
@winry2357
@winry2357 2 жыл бұрын
@@gunkulator1 gender biases don’t really mean anything. Like you said, the Bechdel test doesn’t really tell you anything about a story besides if it has prominent male characters. Men, historically, have lead more adventurous and exciting lives, which tend to make better stories. Women, historically, were less likely to even learn to read and write, let alone leave the home and go on adventures. It makes sense that many stories feature male characters. I want to know what exactly is wrong with talking about male characters in stories? Especially if they’re main characters, it just makes sense in a story. As someone who writes on the side, it’s really difficult to write scenes, let alone full stories, where men aren’t present or even discussed. Maybe it’s just because I enjoy having male characters in my stories, maybe it’s because men are easier for me to relate to. I didn’t have many female friends growing up and I always found them to be catty drama queens. They were always talking about guys too. Most of my stories with just me an my female friends wouldn’t even pass the Bechdel test. Men tend to be more entertaining in my mind anyway. Doesn’t make me sexist, just opinionated.

What makes me laugh is most of the far left type women that produce this nonsense all act like damsels in distress IRL. Instead of standing up for themselves they cry victim or only mouth off on a phone camera or if they have a screamiing pack behind them. Normal women expect better.

Yes, she was using Galadriel as a key example to illustrate her main point that a great deal of modern 'feminism' and especially American feminism centered around denying and disparaging the feminine. Galadriel in LotR is explicitly feminine. She is soft spoken, delicate and beautiful. Know what else she is? EXTREEMLY FUCKING POWERFUL. She's enchanting, she commands any space she occupies without even trying, legitimately the books illustrate how there are members of the fellowship who struggle to even meet her eyes. You think this piss and vinegar 'warrior Galadriel' fanfiction Amazon are writing about could do that? No, because she's not Galadriel, she's Aragon, but watered down.

Many races and accents in a backwater village that rarely sees outsiders? Nothing made any sense at all, nor did it improve on the original material. @@jeandiatasmith4512 I'm sorry, I read all of the books, including what Brandon Sanderson finished... Are you saying you had a problem with Perrin being married? Can you describe to me what Mat's family was like? I don't recall him being from some nuclear Brady bunch family... I'm glad you at least understand that there's diversity within those books, I literally have had super fans screaming at me telling me that in all of Robert Jordan's books there are no black people And actually had to turn to pages in multiple books where skin tones and features were described in detail... The thing about JRR Tolkien's works is that he often didn't go into such detail so all of these people belly aching makes no sense to me And have you not actually experienced the world in any way shape or form? You do realize there are small black water villages that don't see very many outsiders in Africa,South America, and throughout Asia And yet the people in these villages speak a multitude of languages and have a wide range of skin colors... Don't be angry because your view of something doesn't align with other people's view. As I have pointed out multiple times, 90% of the people in these comments are calling themselves super fans and are angry about what they're seeing because they have a certain image built up, even the man that posted the video complained about galadriel being depicted as a warrior, as though JRR Tolkien didn't write her as seeking to rule a kingdom of her own (That is why she went to Middle Earth remember?) No I don't agree with adding people for people's sake, but JRR Tolkien did not say there were not black dwarfs and I hate to break it to people but he also wrote about compelling women such as Lúthien. JRR Tolkien never said that all of the male elves have long hair or even pointy ears but that is what the perception is and that is what is accepted and what people have seen in the movie. Just because you have a glorified view of something does not mean it is right. Those are the people that I am commenting on.... Criticize the implementation, the acting, poor storytelling, the set pieces... That is not what these people are doing, they are criticizing something because they are seeing people that don't look like them being depicted in something they like and they're losing their minds and trying to pretend they're not racist idiots.

And never have I ever, as 22 year old female, wished there was more female representation that I could identify with. It doesn’t make sense to me. All the females in those movies are amazing in their own way. Galadriel is one of the most powerful beings in middle earth and has one of the most goosebumps inducing presence I’ve ever seen in a film. Arwen is not a warrior but she is steadfastly loyal to those she loves and is willing to give up everything for them. Also she convinces Elrond to reforge narsil. Eowyn is a friggin hero willing to fight and die for motives that are not to be mistaken for just intersectional feminism.

Remember, Peter Jackson gave Arwen a more prominent role in the films than she had in the books. Those changes were excellent, especially the flight to the ford. @@Peter-ff1tp show me where Tolkien said that. I defy you. More Arwen was added because of feminism. It was a thing long before 2019. Do you even hear yourself? If Tolkien wanted more Arwen in his story he would have *SIMPLY* ADDED MORE! He took eleven years to write the story and then, in his words, went over it again. He made damn sure it was right. No one was holding a stopwatch on him. He wasn't under contract to anyone to get it finished by a certain date. He took as long as he wanted.
@KeldorDAntrell
@KeldorDAntrell 2 жыл бұрын
Why do you assert that the changes that Jackson made to *TOLKIEN'S* story - in making Arwen more prominent - were excellent, (sic.) "especially the flight to the ford"? All the changes were *SHIT* and an insult to Tolkien. Every change was literally Jackson claiming to know how to write a better story than Tolkien. What did seeing Arwen on a horse at the race to the ford actually add? Did we not have enough characters on horseback? Arwen was just another one. Did it increase the tension that Frodo might get caught or did it just detract from him with a needless extra chase? Did it add to the sense of danger that Frodo was in or did it lessen it because several of them were chasing Arwen? Seriously, what possible argument can you have other than that you're a sexist whose film experience is decreased if there are no women in the shot? Do you have no respect for Tolkien? Perhaps it was the added magic (of which Tolkien obviously wouldn't have approved) when Arwen mumbled some words that the audience couldn't possibly understand (which might have made the scene "excellent") but then surely this only served to *DETRACT* from Gandalf's part in the dissolution of the Nine, clearly implying that it was Arwen that had done this (not Elrond with a touch of style by Gandalf)? The problem *is* with the desire to increase diversity or make female characters more compelling precisely because they have placed agenda ahead of story. This is one of the single most important points Gary and his ilk have been making for years now. The only people wanting diversity and "more compelling female characters" are talentless birdbrains which is *WHY* they don't handle these things with skill. Jackson failed with Arwen because he only added her extra parts because of agenda (and he's talentless enough in his own right).

Actually not only did the Arwen sequence steel an important male Elf’s role in the story (Glorfindel), but appropriated a moment of heroism that originally belonged to Frodo. In the book, it was he that drew his sword and dared the Nazghul to come get him, and the work of Elrond and Gandalf that flooded the river. Arwen was competently implemented, though unnecessary.

@@KeldorDAntrell And yet the point remains, Arwen is the books is a weak character who needs some set up in the movie, and the flight to the ford was an elegant way to give her character meaning. It was a reasonable and proportionate way to improve Tolkein's work for the big screen in 2000.

@@samaritan_sys Fair play for being open about the fact that it's Glorfindel's maleness that you're offended for. Sure, Glorfindel is important in the wider world building of Middle Earth, but the movie doesn't have the time to explore his character... but the story does need Arwen to be someone of note - arguably a flaw in Tolkein's story. The bechdal test is an absurd joke. any scene in any film, HAS to relate to other characters or it isn't linked to the main plot, and the main themes. She was Aragorn's rock and hinted to be one of his main reasons for taking on the kingship and not effing off back to the woods after Sauron was defeated (in the movies, at any rate). If that's not a powerful showing of women, I don't know what to tell you.

The only thing I just cannot wrap my head around is why a company as successful as Amazon would acquiesce to what is obviously a minority of people who live and breathe this woke crap. I don't think for a second that the people in charge at Amazon actually care about it themselves (they care about profit), but for whatever reason they vastly, vastly overestimate the percentage of the population who do. My only guess is that they're constantly surrounded by these people, being HQ'd in Seattle, so that's why they overestimate them. But...wouldn't that perception be overcome if they were to do basic consumer research using, you know, normal people? I really don't get it.

You hit the nail on the head. Market research (not via Twitter). I think the issue is far lefties infiltrate via marketing & HR. They seem to gravitate to those jobs then get their mates in via that route. Amazon has it's own customers & they know their watching habits. It would be easy enough to survey them. i.e. if we make LOTR would you accept X changes yes/no or prefer the status quo yes/no. Easy done. But if I'm right about marketing staff they will ignore what they don't want to hear which is why bosses outside that dept. need to be keeping a closer eye to find out what's what.

I'm 50 years old, I first read the hobbit when I was 8 and then first read LOTR when I was about 10. I own 3 copies of the Hobbit, including the illustrated and annotated one, 3 copies of LOTR, including the hardback box set, 2 copies of the Silmarillion, including the hardback version, as well as nearly all the additional works Christopher Tolkein kindly put together for the real fans. I've read each book at least 10 times and usually pull LOTR out once every 1-2 years and read it from cover to cover. There is a reason Tolkein is the father of high fantasy and why the book at least here in the UK was voted the greatest book of the 20th century in a nationwide poll. It won by a country mile, the vote wasn't even close. But for me the most telling things are JRR and Christophers words themselves, no interpreted etc and we all know that there is no way this abomination would have been made whilst Christopher (RIP) was still alive, there is no way the Tolkein estate would have sold any rights to Amazon whilst Christopher was in control. That and his comments about the Hobbit trilogy of films (which in my opinion is god awful) says it all. Amazon are not adapting LOTR, they are trying to destroy it and turn in into some kind of woke propaganda and I for one will NEVER pay them a single solitary penny for anything to do with it. I will never watch it, same as having watched 20mins of their wokeified Wheel of Time, I will never watch anymore. If Hollywierd or TV studios want any more money from me, they can do one thing. Stop creating propganda, it's not entertainment and nobody except the woke muppets want to watch it. Why do they think the viewing figures for everything woke are going through the floor. Here's an idea. If the characters portrayed in a story do not align with your own unique experience of existence and this makes it difficult for you to relate to them, and the attitudes and values represented in that story offend you, maybe that story is not for you and you should just find other stories that you can enjoy, maybe even write your own stories.

the problem for these big companies when not having every single character being relatable makes them think they're losing out on potential profits, which in my opinion is the worst way you can make any kind of content i.e. only thinking about potential financial gain and not putting out a good story for people to enjoy. And also I think if you were to put people you don't see yourself in into movies that you really like and that said person has quality traits in society then you perhaps as a human being try to mimic those traits and possibly try to become a better person to align more with said person in your favorite movie, but if your favorite character in your favorite movie/show is exactly like you then you yourself will have no alterations and may still carry your bad traits and personalities which are seen as bad to other people. I'm not saying though that if you are very similar to the person in your favorite movie already that you have bad traits and personality but it would be less likely that you would notice them and make the change in behaviour to be a better person. That is also why a lot of people who get into bad company tend to become bad company because they alter their behaviour towards people the look to be like (even when they don't notice said person has bad societal traits and behaviours) I'm all for different ethnicites in movies and shows but when it comes to said ethnicity being in the show/movie purely for political and leftist appraisal then it ruins the storytelling and drives the immersion away by not fitting into the narrative and athmosphere, like having a black person in a movie about vikings or a white person about the qing dynasty in china, it just sticks out and doesn't fit with the source material but enough of my venting with due regards. I have long said that I much prefer the Tolkien fandom; it is to my mind far larger, far more discerning, and far more rigidly unified in its assessment of adaptations, than the Star Wars fandom. It is a shame, really; George Lucas told a moving story in the form of the prequel trilogy, but a substantial portion of the fandom was too late in its appreciation thereof. It consciously chose to overlook a very good story and instead feel affronted at the only very occasional ropey dialogue (the occurrence of some of which is in fact sensible). And there is also a large element in the fandom that is still so purist that it does not heed even valid points of appreciation of the prequels and clings rigidly only to the original trilogy. The Tolkien fandom, on the other hand, has from the very beginning been unequivocal in its blend of appreciation and criticism of Peter Jackson's trilogy. And its intimidating power is being felt by so big a an entity as Amazon. It must emerge victorious.

I would yes cause she knows that the hardcore fans of lord of the ring would not fall for this crappy show.

The quote at 12:23 is misleading on their part. Assuming fans and viewers are going to be outraged because of skin color or nationality. Perhaps some will be, but the issue(s) they are not seeing is the alteration of the source material. It would be the same as saying King Arthur was really a female from feudal Japan who fled and started a new life.

I think a lot of them do see the real issues, they're just narcissist who think the world should revolve around them. They just pretend we're bigots so they can dismiss us, virtue signal and dodge responsibility for their evil ways. They engineer the outrage, they made a dwarf female without a beard knowing we'd lose it, and made her black so when we lost it they could dismiss us... same way the climate fear propagandists used a small autistic white girl as a spokesperson. It's all so tiresome

Yep. And then me calling you a misogynist and a racist for not appreciating the adaptation.🤦🏻‍♂️
