Yep my paperweight that looks brand new. Never dropped and always has been in a case just stopped charging. It’s 2 years old so not very old. They know they can get away with making cheap inferior products now because everyone is already locked in because their library is stuck in amazon. So unless they want to abandon their library they have to upgrade. I refuse and bought a used voyage and the thing is awesome. Back when they made good ereaders to get people locked in. Now they can make crap and people will still buy it. Sucks. I hate Amazon 😔

We have had about 4 of them and I have found them the most robust reliable electronic item on the market. Now dont think I'm an amazon fanboy as I actually have a dislike for amazon but they do make some great products.

This scares me. I recently purchased a Kindle 10th gen after being happy with my 7th gen kindle for 5 yrs. I wanted the smaller and lighter size of the 10th gen. But the 10th gen I received had a crack in it and screen is not working. I'm thinking if I should just get refunded and continue to use my old Kindle, or have it replaced?

I had this exact same problem with a 10th gen kindle. I took off the back cover, disconnected the battery cable and all the LCD cables from the main board. Let it sit for maybe a minute, reconnected everything and it rebooted perfectly.

So true Ben, It's a shame to see things going backwards due to this marketed "need" for thinner and lighter devices, making them fall into an almost disposable operation model. The worlds resources aren't infinite so designing as if they are is not the answer. I guess I feel the big giants of the industry should be the ones leading the change, or setting the good example to allow consumers to demand the same from entry level brands, not the other way around. Thanks for noticing the editing haha, I try to add some spice into the vids 😉

I've actually taken apart Kindle and Kobo e-readers before. With Kindle, Amazon actually glues the display to the mid-frame with one huge sheet of double-sided tape, at least on the 7th generation basic and Paperwhite. However, on the equivalent generation Kobo e-readers, the Touch 2.0 and Glo HD respectively, the displays were adhered to the mid-frame with just 4 pieces of double-sided tape that are easier to cut through. As such, the Kindle e-readers are nice examples to me of how NOT to build e-readers. As far as I know, while they cost more, Kobo e-readers are manufactured for them by an OEM called "Netronix", who I believe also help design the internals, and I applaud them for not doing what Amazon did. I know which company I could approach if I want to build e-readers! On the other hand, it's clear to me that Amazon builds their devices to meet specific price points.

Hey Kevin, I missed your comment so sorry for the late reply. That's super interesting, I'm not surprised at all that you feel the Kindle wasn't made with reparability in mind. It is a shame, the tech world should be evolving to make things easier to fix and upcycle, but instead marketing teams are pushing engineers to make stuff thinner and lighter so they can pedal a message of "you need the new model because you just do". Hopefully in our lifetime we see the shift happen where products with actual reparability are favored over their slimline options. Heck, Samsung just brought back removable batteries on their Galaxy Tab Active 3, so there's hope 😊🤞 Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment, really appreciate it 😁

I’m quite new to Kindle after finding one at home. It was used by my mother for a week maybe 3 years ago. I fired it up few days ago and started loading books onto it. I downloaded a few free classics from Amazon and then updated the kindle software. Unprepared to pay Amazon anything for some other out of copyright books, I got some books off Project Gutenberg and Standard Ebooks and transferred them over. Waited about five minutes, but not all of them showed up, despite being visible in the device root via Mac. So I restarted the kindle and boom, hit the ‘tree of death’. After years of Apple use I thought this is annoying, how do I kick the device out of this frozen state? Once had an iPhone get stuck during a restore, but few tricks later it rebooted fine. Spoke to Amazon support and was quite frankly gobsmacked when they told me it was completely broken. In my mind, tech just doesn’t break like this, unless battery is at end of lifecycle and device doesn’t boot up. This was nothing but a serious software glitch I think and yet Amazon said there was no solution. Was passed up the technical team tree and after repeatedly pointing out how ridiculous the whole thing was, they offered me a meagre 15% discount on a new device. Why would I buy a new one when simply restarting the device could render a £100+ device as useful as a drinks coaster? I’m prepared to give Kobos a try, but honestly shocking service from Amazon. With Apple, Samsung, Sony etc I could bring it into their stores and if a genius can’t fix it, they would offer me a new device (or refurb) at a not extortionate proportion of the cost of buying a new device, yet no such service from Amazon. Excuse the rant, but your video really resonated with me!

As far as Kindles are concerned, Amazon is not very forthcoming on warranty service. They try to get out of anything concerning Kindled. Mine was just out of the box and after 6 hours use, it quit. They said I didn't use the "correct charger" when I told them I used the charger that came with it. I said, then I wanted to exchange it for a new one. They said I would have to send it to them and pay shipping both ways. They would either exchange with a refurbished Kindle, or send it to their repair shop to be repaired at MY cost. It was like there was NO WARRANTY at all. A couple of surface mount diodes, a surface mount transistor, and nasty note to Amazon later, and my Kindle worked as it should. I believe that I was sent a "refurbished" model marked as brand new. It wasn't "refurbished" very well. In Alabama, we have a "right to repair" law when a manufacturer will not back up their printed warranty, then have the right to bill the source for the cost of repair. I sent a bill to Amazon three months ago, but haven't heard anything back - yet. Also, I asked what impedance the headphones should be for my Kindle. They said they didn't know!!! How ridiculous!!! Not only did they not honor their warranty, they didn't know the specifications of their own product!! I think it is time to contact my State's Attorney General to see what they can.do for me.

wow that's very interesting! In Australia they said they just flat out have no repair services here which is incredibly disappointing for a company as big as they are. Poor form to have you pay for return shipping if the product was deemed faulty and essentially DOA. Seems you know a thing or two about electronics which would be far beyond most tech support lines these days... I've had to wait weeks to get answers on specs before, heck GoPro had to query with an engineer about the basic functionality of one of their products. Shouldn't have to lean on the law to get things handled properly. Good luck anyway though!

@@camshandI know this thread is old, but I just got a small 1/4” scratch on my Kindle Paperwhite that is leaking light that I need to fix and ended up coming across your video. When I called Amazon (in the US), they asked if it was under warranty (nope) and told me they would only repair this issue if it was under warranty. I said I will pay, but I don’t want to landfill an item with a fixable issue, which obviously, it is because they told me they would repair it if it was under warranty. NOPE. That is just garbage for such a massive company to be causing so many devices to be trashed. Infuriating, actually. Enjoyed your video, though. I think they kind of mislead you to say there are no service centers in Australia, so they won’t fix it (seems to imply if you were just in a different country, you’d have been able to get it repaired) because I don’t think they will fix any Kindle not under warranty ANYWHERE, even though obviously, some of us would prefer to pay for a repair and not be as wasteful and disrespectful to our planet’s limited resources. Lame and gross, Amazon, but not exactly surprising, sadly.

I just bought a used 2nd generation kindle on Ebay for it's speaking function as my old one broke. I could listen to books while walking or sunning. No longer. They dropped support for them. I cannot register it. I believe that they discovered that more money could be made from audible and covered their mistake by claiming possible copyright infringement, yet they can get text to speech in awkward ways. Is this interesting?

Hi Brian, YES super interesting, I too figured that out the hard way after we purchased the 10th Gen kindle originally. I thought you could playback as audio as well, saw it previously advertised as a feature of kindle devices in general then BAM they've taken it away. I agree it's most likely a strategic move to promote audible, which I also use. It's a shame to see the crippling of features on newer generation devices, however it's hard to say if it's to control the market or a design choice. Surely it's not hard to add Bluetooth to an already Wi-Fi capable device to allow it to work with headphones and speakers for audiobooks too. Thanks for leaving such a great comment 😁👍

Yeah it's ridiculous! I've now switched to the supernote to read Kindle books. Only difference is it doesn't have a backlight but it does have a lot more features :)

100% if you have warranty remaining on it give it a shot. Since we damaged ours, we were stuck with no option. But if you're able to pursue a warranty claim I've heard amazon are very prompt to swap it over with a new unit.

Late to your video, but this just happened. Kindle Fire 10 black screen (of death). All Amazon suggested reboot suggestions unsuccessful. Amazon told me it was out of warranty and they'd give me credit for new one. Said I wasn't simply throwing equipment away - understood warranty out, but willing to pay for repair.. AMZ says not an option. Told support since they sell refurbished Fire10s someone, somewhere knows how to repair them. Continued with line that only option was 20% off another unit (if I send this one back). Note: my 10 year old Kindle7 still works, the 3 year old Kindle10 has crashed. Probably only need new battery but cannot find one anywhere!

I have had 3 different Kindle Paperwhite 2021, that got stuck on the tree/boy screen. Did all the trouble shooting. Amazon would not replace it, but only refund it if I sent it in. I was still under warranty, only had since Dec 2021.

That must be annoying! It's a shame they aren't wanting to complete repairs, I guess taking the time to repair devices is expensive and timely and they're most likely more interested in quick fast turnarounds... even if it leaves the earth with a lot of e-waste 😢

There may be a way to fix this problem under the following circumstance, I am suggesting this just in case if you didn't try it yet. If you have too many files on the kindle, connect your kindle to your computer via the USB cable. Open up the storage drive of your kindle on your computer, go to the Documents folder, select all the files inside the Documents folder, right click on one of those files and click Cut, paste the files you've cut into another location on your computer, then copy one of those files back into the Documents folder on the kindle. Eject the kindle, but keep the USB plugged in for now for the file to get indexed. If the kindle still does not boot up, restart it. Like any devices, kindle needs storage space, you don't want to overfill it.

hey mate, you're best/only option if it's a current model is to try a replacement through Amazon directly or the store you bought from. As I found in the video.... you can't get replacement parts and stores also weren't able to source them either.

Kindle is great, but Amazon's no repair policy is really annoying. My sister's Kindle started with a ghost touch problem on the screen, so she contacted their customer service and they ended up giving her a gift card with enough money to buy a new Kindle, when they could've just fixed/replaced the screen and I'd cost them way less? Anyways, since she's gonna have a new one, she gave the one with the screen problem to me, so I've been trying to find my way around it. I even opened it up today, but I found out that all the cables are literally glued to the motherboard, which I think further invalidates a way for us to fix the product. It's just.... Really really frustrating, because that means I probably won't be able to replace the screen, if I even find a seller that sells them. It's time to held Amazon accountable in their responsibility for increasing the toll of e-waste, when they could easy fix broken products instead of generating a new one.

They want you to buy a new one. I'll bet the actual cost of making one is a few quid. I bought one the other week, 2 days later, they dropped the price by £20, as a special offer for a week. I phoned them, but, instead of just dumping £20 back onto my payment method, which would've been the logical thing to do, they asked me to buy another one, at the reduced price and send the first one back (when it arrived) for a refund! 🤯 What a bizarre way of doing things. I don't mind, I ended up getting £20 off, but they had to go through all of that shipping etc and plus, I ended up opening two units!

Yeap, and then that one you return will probably end up as ewaste anyway as Amazon are notorious for not sorting returned products as they don't have second hand or refurb system. I had to do that for some headphones from the US, had to be returned to the other side of the world!

This is why you should buy physical copys of things and not digital. Being locked into device specific content is not good for the consumer, no matter how convenient it may appear at the beginning.

I agree in owning non DRM locked content especially when it comes to hardware. I will still buy games or movies which I really like, however subscription services can be super enticing! I easily fixed the volume rocker on an asus 580 tablet but my damaged screen. Ever so slightly damaged. But irritating kindle paper white. I cannot find a screen.

Yep! I agree! A bit to the left of the topic here; Keeping things clean extends the life of Any type of appliance or device. I learned when I was a kid "general maintenance" on your stuff means, take it apart to clean it out. Put oil on moving parts. Being able to clean out the dirt that gets into any appliance made all my stuff live a lot longer than expected and prevents breaking. But I've begun to notice a lot of things don't come apart at all. You can't clean things out any more. I mean, ever look at how much dirt gets inside of a household fan? Or a toaster? I have a fan that I cannot take apart, Smh, I will not buy anything from that company ever again. I mean WHO is stupid enough (or sleazy enough) to make a fan in such a way that you cannot take the face off of it to clean out the lint? The ONLY thing I can think of that would be stupider than that would be a vacuum cleaner that could not be emptied out.

yes it's a shame that product designs these days are pushing to remove reparability. Modern day planned obsolescence is crazy common, and it just adds to the e-waste and landfill problem. There's been some laws changing in the states around right to repair, and this is starting to move things in the right direction. The more people that know they can fix their own stuff, the more will start to demand for the process to be made easier. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊

Yeah finding used parts would be the only way. Was more so hoping to find there was some replacement parts available, or officially supported service. Guess it's what Happens when tech becomes so cheap, the cost of replacement parts are more than the man hours to repair so no one bothers... Thanks for the suggestion though, appreciate it! 😊✌️

yeah, that's kinda an afterthought haha. The video was more so to highlight the inability to repair the device if something was to happen to the screen. But yes using a case would reduce the chance of running into this non-repairable issue

I had a cover for mine and it still broke. The pages would turn by themselves. I should have contacted them right away, but I thought it was a fluke. They said I must have put pressure on the screen. I contacted them less than a week after warranty expired, and the best they would do was offer me a small percentage off a new one. Why would I want a new one when they suck?

Yeah spare parts are often inflated to astronomical prices, that's an issue on it's own haha. The main principal of this video was there's zero repair support, they're actively shipping a single use product, once it's damaged throw it in the bin... this shouldn't be the way we handle tech and repair options cheaper than buying new need to become common. I've got paperwhite3 with a white line defect on screen and paperwhite1 with no issue. I'm going to giveaway one of them but not sure which one should I keep for my own. I was thinking about replace screen for paperwhite3 and keep it and found this vid. Now I know it's not worth to replace it but still not sure which one should I keep. Lol

If it's under warranty period Amazon will swap it out pretty easily but yeah as far as parts go, it sucks they don't support it. Really bad practice in a world that's trying to be more eco minded to just flat out make a paperweight once anything breaks.

There is a moving part in the kindle. You knocked it loose. just send it back to amazon. if its less than a year old they will replace it for free.

@@camshand When you touch it do you feel the "shattered" area? It appears that your screen is not shattered. It looks like an internal problem to me and I handle broken kindles constantly. Of course I cannot feel the screen myself. but if you rub your fingers over the screen and cannot feel anything broken, (appearance can be deceiving) Send it back to Amazon. even if its more than a year old they will cut you a deal on replacement. If its less than a year old, you get a new replacement for free.

Yes but it's the ePaper screen we were still after, so bought a replacement. However I only just noticed that Xiaomi have epaper android tablets, and are also releasing a new model soon! So very excited to see that, as does allow you to access the Kindle Books. I've tried reading the books on my iPad and phones, and eInk technology is just so incredible, and way easier on your eyes it doesn't compare to a normal LCD. Thanks for raising the option though!

I have just pulled about a kindle paperwhite 1. The screen part number was under the screen on a little white sticker, that couldn't be seen until the screen was removed, from the aluminum frame. I'm guessing yours maybe the same. Once I had the number, I used it to track a part down on Ali Express.

@@camshand yeah it is a older one. I am also in the process of repairing a kindle touch, so I kind of knew what the screen part number looked like. Hence why I pulled the paperwhite apart further until I found the same sticker

I'm happy to be wrong but as stated in the video, Amazon refused to repair, and I called about 3 local repair shops and none said they can get parts for the current generation kindles. Yes sure, old models, there's parts everywhere, but finding new replacement parts didn't happen

you could have purchased a used i pad mini . We have many Kindle books & use i pad mini to read them. Cost of mini was £65.00 second hand.
