To me it appears that trusova was really counting on that being her crowning moment instead of the ultimate win, so in choosing valieva it was the ultimate blow, another reason for her breaking down when ultimately becoming second place again... anyway, had eteri just chosen her or ana they wouldnt have had all this trouble

Recognizing LGBTQ+ athletes is important from a historical perspective because of how they were treated in the past. Skaters like John Curry and Rudy Galindo can tell you what it was like to experience homophobia in this sport. The fact that Ilia Malinin, the current U.S. champion, made a comment about how not saying he's straight will increase his PCS, shows that homophobic beliefs are still in the sport. And recognizing an athlete who is LGBTQ+ does not reduce them to one thing or minimize their accomplishments unless you see it that way. That is just one part of their identity that they feel proud to be open about when it was restricted in the past and when it is still restricted in many places today.

@@Hi-lu5vfLet's be honest, Mark never stood a chance for the Individual Event anyway, his poor result in the Individual Event had nothing to do with the Team Event, in no universe he would have been able to surpass Nathan, Yuma, Shoma and Yuzu to get a medal. As for Mishina/Galliamov, the only way for them to surpass Sui and Han was if they made a critical mistake but they didn't. Nobody could have surpassed a clean Sui and Han in their home Olympics. Maybe Mishina/Galliamov could have taken the silver medal instead of Tarasova/Morozov if they weren't tired from the Team Event, but anything less than a gold means losing for them anyway 🤷🏼♀️
