Deanna for her part had one partner before Maxime which was Nathan Bartholomay and it ended in 2018. Pairs men are in high demand and Deanna's age was an issue because most pair women are quite young so she was having trouble finding a partner but she did a tryout with Maxime and it worked. Then COVID happened and they mentioned training on frozen ponds because rinks were closed. Their rise for only being partners for 3 seasons is amazing and proof of how the right partner can just bring out the best in a skater

longevity doesn't necessarily mean "sustainability". Forcing a skater to have a long career for what ?? If someone wants to retire at 25, at 20, or at 17, they have the right to do so. They skate for their sake, not to please some maniacal fans. Why competing longer and risking injury on the long term, if you can stop while you still can and earn more money with an easier way ? Often, skaters just choose to compete the longest possible because they have no other solution. Besides, ice dance is not singles. I don't even see how someone can consider themselves figure skating fan an do such a gross analogy.

@@NuneliiYou're off the mark. There is no implication of being forced to have a long career. The comment is obviously referring to skaters who are forced to retire due to bodies breaking down at a young age and being critical of that. Being healthy and competitive at 40 is a sign that a body has been well taken care of and not forced into a long career. Of course, retiring young due to your own choice and not health is a good thing. The implication was never counter to that.
@Nunelii8 ай бұрын
@@panner11 "There is no implication of being forced to have a long career" excuse me ?? YOU are off the mark. Everywhere in the figure skating fandom (and in ISU's rules), there are implications that older the skater is, better it is. Everywhere there are implications that if a skater retires at a young age, it's necessarily that they were injured, exploited. The reality is way more complicated than that ? You don't have the luxuryof taking it easy and having a "long" career when you're competing in some countries. If Deanna was able to compete that long, it's because the country and discipline in which she evolved permitted that. Don't compare every skater in the world on the same plan and standard as if they all had the same chances and opportunities.

Commentary: Pairs: So on Deanna, because there's a reason I named a character after her. She was a singles skater back in the 90s and 2000s, and retired because of an injury. She had a whole other life, job, she got married... and then one day at a work thing there was an exercise where she got a question that was 'what would you do if you knew you couldn't fail' and she said 'win olympic gold'. So she worked on her own to get back all her triples, and then asked her coach from back then if it was realistically possible. Eventually she ended up trying pairs, first with someone else and then with Max. Deanna is American, so they had some trouble during the pandemic while the federation switch took place, but they made it, and even competed through a respiratory illness she had last season. A super well deserved special achievement award at the ISU awards. And Riku and Ryiuichi came in as defending world champions, and they're amazing in their own right, but have been struggling with medical issues. They still took a well deserved silver though! Dance: You neeeeddd to watch Piper and Paul's free. They actually won that to clinch silver. It is mesmerizing. Women's: Paoollaa you're missing out on so many great people in the lower levels. I know you're busy, but maybe pop into the discord we have all the server recs for you (even if we do disagree on a couple of people). Chaeyeon has been incredible, and she's only been skating for 7 years! She got the silver at 4CC. On Isabeau, I love her as a person and with her artistry, but there is no way that technique on the jumps deserved that GOE. People were really mad about USFS politicking so hard. And we have to talk about how Kaori is the first woman to 3peat since Peggy Fleming! Mens: I love Donovan so much. Speaking of 10th place, I wish the top 10 had more spots, because I am devastated for Sasha Selevko. He was so close to clinching that second one for Estonia. Sure, experience, he definitely skated clean, but once again the USFS was politicking real hard. I can't believe that short went over Deniss, Lukas and Nikolaj. Just baffling to me. That free from Adam was just incredible. People on the server are huge fans of his and we were devastated by his short. And the free was just the absolute best. And that Yuma/Caro collaboration is the best. As for Ilia, he wasn't even sure he was coming to worlds because of an injury. What he did despite that is impressive. Also, Ilia has been noted to always be watching at the boards during the last group. He is suuuperr competitive. Also, the Ilia, Adam, Lukas Britschgi trio is the friendship I didn't know I needed but has become one of the best parts of the sport.

Okay, I’m going to go through my clarifications up through AHSF’s short. Deanna didn’t really go through partners for years. She was a successful juniors skater for the USA, took a decade and a half off and then returned and learned pairs. She does physical training an extra 3-4 hours to compensate for the inevitable challenges that come with her age (also my age). And she actually doesn’t have her Canadian citizenship yet, but they thought it would be easier for her to get Canadian citizenship than for Maxime to get US citizenship. Here’s hoping 1. her body allows her to persevere through the Olympics, and 2. she can get her Canadian citizenship. Hopefully she’ll get similar assistance to what Tanith Belbin got in the US in 2005/6. Kim Chaeyon has only been skating seven years! Remarkable! The little footing issue for Chock and Bates actually caused them to lose 2 levels on that spin because the position wasn’t held long enough. And the song for the rhythm dance was by a rock band, but it wasn’t a rock song. The bassist was actually influenced by funk when he wrote that song, and Michael Jackson encouraged them to release it. I, too, was holding my breath for Isabeau’s ending spins. Not only did Adam screw up all his jumps, I don’t think he was able to complete a combo, so one of those jumps got absolutely 0 points.

Also the difference of presence between Chock and Bates is huge because she is so expressive/fluid while he had the same smile throughout all the programs and more rigid moves. I know it is naturally what you learn has the 'holder' of the couple but then you finish by only watching her (I miss Guillaume and Gabriella in this regard). For me the Canadian stole the show with an impressive free dance, I loved the Italian as well. I thought that Chock and Bates kind of benefited from the 'world champion' bonus. I would say tho that maybe I missed some points because ice dance is difficult to appreciate technically as a non-specialist...

Come on! If no talent males men like Yuzuru Hanyu and Ilya Malinin can do and try quad axel 4,5 round rotation then ladies can jump quads jumps easily! Men skate 10% faster than top ladies and men jump 17% longer and higher than the top ladies! So we get formula 1/2mv2=mgh and we get top ladies can jump 3,8 round rotation easily! Trusova 0,2 Pre rotation! There are over 100xtimes More girls figure skaters than no talent Boys skaters! We should have 40-50 women doing quads easily! Finnish skater Kiira Korpi lied Finnish tv that Yulia Lipnitskaya started big jumps ERA! Yulia Lipnitskaya her double axel was the smallest ever! Yulia Lipnitskaya her double axel was so tiny! Midori Ito did triple axel 3,5 round rotation in 1989! Tonya Harding did jump triple axel 3,5 round rotation in 1991! And western world people and sports commentators loved big jumps but not today because russians doing big jumps! Why not probaganda videos that Simone Biles should do less twists and vaults and Bilels vault landings not perfect little extra steps her landings! These figure skating videos are lame lie probaganda against women and Russians! Finnish skater Susanna Pöykiö had the Best most beautiful double axel ever! Susanna better than triple axel or quads jumpers! Sisters are doing it! Sisters going to do quads jumps easily in the future!

@ “no talent” and “yuzuru hanyu” do not belong in the same sentence i’m sorry. and it’s useless to do all of these calculations when you’re taking into account either abused children or grown women with a very specific body type that either stopped at a 3A combo or only did a few quads in their lifetimes. the average female figure skater cannot handle the strength it takes to do a quad, they either won’t try it at all for self-preservation or their bodies will give out before they’re 18 despite the excessive prerotation. women’s figure skating shouldn’t be dominated by quads, we’ll only get one-hit wonders if they’re re-introduced.

I love Paola's enthusiasm. She is the Angelika Krylova of skating commentators. Great analysis though I don't agree about Chock and BAtes. I think their Free dance was lacking energy besides the mistake at thebeginning. It really was overtaken by Wuthering Heights (Piper and Paul). And CB are performers but technically there are better skaters.

I HAVE A VIDEO TO PROVE IT. I didn’t even know worlds were taking place until I saw this upload 😆 but just spent the last week watching everything so tysm for posting!!! After the short I thought Kaori was out of the running, so to see that free skate was magical! & I’m glad Illia skated last because it allowed me to truly appreciate the other skaters before he completely dominated everything!! 😂 & when he went I couldn’t close my mouth that’s how far my jaw dropped. Shoma did incredible tho - we all just have our off days and I think it was just shaky legs and his balance feeling a bit off that led him to drop off the podium 😮💨 things happen - doesn’t make him any less of a skater tho. The Adam thing was hilarious tho. When u think u aren’t even vying for the podium anymore but walk away with a medal XP

At first I was not so happy with this worlds specially men’s but your video help me love it more. Is just that last year was so perfect to me, I cry so much watching that I knew this year would have a hard job to level up. But Adam (and your video) were the ones to give me back my happiness with this words!! I love him back in the Podium, I love my baby Yuma too (I kind of like his short, In Yuma, I believe, lol). I wish Shoma was three times champion, would’ve been epic, but my light and happiness did that. You forgot to mention that it was Kaori 3rd title in a row!!! First woman to do that since the 60’s. She never disappoints, always brings me so much happiness. I was sad for Leona, I really like her programs, they have such viral vibe. And of course Korean (who last year was my happiness), only brought me tears, Jun and Haelin broke my heart!!! After so much last year, it was hard. And is the reason I was still longing for last year’s. But yeah, Adam, Kaori and more were great and it was another amazing worlds

@StewNWT9 ай бұрын
I def agree with you though about Ilia (even though I'm ecstatic he won with that incredible free skate) is using sloppy and flailing as a euphemism for high energy right now - the last choreo and step sequence in his free program was hella floppy

There is no way Adam would have been the world champion even with a clean short. Please do some research and not state your opinions as facts

I too also used to like only men's and women's figure skating, but I really enjoy ice-dancing now (can take or leave pairs skating, it looks the same trick pony show over and over). It's interesting to look at some Torvill and Dean programs from the past (especially Bolero) to see how this discipline has evolved. I still never see anyone skate as close together as T&D. They will always be a favorite of mine.

Hi Paola! 🙂 Great video! I hope you're doing well! 💖 I just wanted to chime in with a few of my personal favorites (in aside from the people/moments/programs you discussed, which were all incredible): Amber and Isabeau's combined efforts getting a third women's spot for Team USA! Fear and Gibson's Rocky free dance. It's so different and high-energy and just fun to watch. Plus, they went the extra mile by getting jackets to go with their costumes for the warm-ups. Guignard and Fabbri powering through a wardrobe malfunction and still delivering (it's a shame that happened to them, especially because the dress was beautiful). Lorine Schild's free skate music. It's so pretty! The Dutch pair doing a Hunger Games-themed skate. A few men who started growing on me during European championships (in addition to Adam), so I was excited to see them here: Alexsandr Selevko, Deniss Vasiljevs, and Ivan Shmuratko. I really like Alexandr's spin with the arms out towards the end of his free skate. I know it's not aerodynamic, but it sure is fun to watch! I saw someone else comment with regard to him that it's too bad there aren't more spots in the top 10, and I feel the same way! Deniss does a really great short program to Hallelujah. I think it's really a bummer that Ivan didn't get to do his free skate here (especially because he does a really cool split slide in it). He also uses his art to deliver a message, and it's just so impactful and good! I apologize in advance for any misspellings. I double-checked the names I wasn't sure about, but I can't make any guarantees. Overall, great worlds! ⛸🎆
