When Johnny smiles, I think it’s a coping mechanism because he’s so ashamed of what she did that he’s trying to laugh it off and be lighthearted about the severity of the situation. When I was listening to the full conversation recording I burst out laughing at what a psycho she was from the first few minutes and Johnny's humble, calm, well thought responses, which was to me a replay of my past relationship. And even I try to "humorise" when talking about it to people, trying to turn those highly negative/detrimental experiences into a joke for the listener's comfort, while somehow, inside, blaming my idiocy for sticking around so long with such a narcissistic, self-sympathizing nutjob, who I had actually identified as a psycho much earlier, before the real shit show happened. In relation to Johnny continuously pausing in his testimony, as someone with PTSD, whenever I've had to recount traumatic incidents in the past it has taken me absolute ages (and I have a problem with usually speaking too fast lol). It's like my brain shuts down every few seconds to avoid reliving the incident and I have to keep bringing myself back to the present and try and remember where I was in order to finish the story. Everything about Johnny's testimonies has felt relatable or familiar to me as a survivor of abuse and younger sibling to an opiate addict. Watching Amber Heard is like watching an alien make a mockery of those two experiences.
@BatsAndBadgers2 жыл бұрын
That's disassociation and you are completely correct in that your mind has closed the unprocessed memory off since it can't process it and doesn't want it to harm you further, and trying to get to it is trying to overcome your brains self defense. One correction: ppl with PTSD sometimes remember their trauma VIVIDLY, the strangest and seemingly smallest details are etched into our minds. This is the case with many of my experiences / flashbacks. It's not unusual to recall events in such detail.
@haileyranson82552 ай бұрын
You're right - I have very serious PTSD and my memories are so jumbled up. Some things are completely blank and some incredibly weird and random things are as clear as day. Sometimes when the brain is constantly alert for attack, it shuts down when the attack happens and focuses on something irirrelevant to protect itself. Unless you've experienced real trauma, it's hard to understand that. However, I dont believe this is the case for Amber when she's recalling the dirty carper or whatever. It feels to me that she's researched trauma and tried to mimick the behaviour, but she doesn't feel emotions the way most people do and therefore seems like a liar. She's trying TOO hard.

I also have a friend who smiles and laughs when she is experiencing negative emotions. It is often a result of being raised in an environment where negative emotions are not welcome and/or are met with aggression. But we are watching a man and I see some cultural attitude showing through as well. Some of the old, "I'm a man and I can't show how much this has deeply affected me", attempt at being/seeming cavalier about the things that he's actually suffered from his own wife. This isn't meant as a criticism. It's an acknowledgement that those attitudes remain embedded, even in progressive adults who move in liberal circles.

I was raised in a very very healthy environment - i.e. never been abused, really great parents/family, etc. (very lucky and blessed in that regard). I’ve definitely smiled when hearing terrible news. Happened in the theatre during Open Water and again during A Quiet Place, which was super embarrassing (if you’ve seen A Quiet Place - you’ll understand why. It’s mostly silent and you could hear a pin drop in the theatre. And then I start laughing. People probably thought I was a some sort of psychopath.)

Johnny also does this thing where he allows himself to fall into Jack Sparrow, a familiar character to distance himself from what's happening. Bc when you listen to him being genuine and vulnerable, he's incredibly soft-spoken and stumbles a bit. But in court and in the video of him with Amber, he takes on the Sparrow kind of accent/flow of the words. Swaying a bit, jerky movements, and a slight slur in that video, he's trying to play it off for the interviewer. In court, he gets sassy with Amber's lawyer to protect himself from being vulnerable with someone he doesn't trust.

@@IndefiniteMark no it's not comfort eating. He's right in saying she was likely advised to bring food up there in order to stall for time when she's asked a difficult question. This is evident because she reacts completely differently on two separate occasions to having food in her mouth when asked a question - when she is asked a question she finds easy to answer, she speaks with her mouthful, but a difficult question prompts her to make a huge show of trying to chew so she can answer as if she doesn't want to speak with her mouth full. I'm usually the first to get irritated at the current trend of calling everyone a Narcissiatic/psychopath/sociopath, but on this occasion I believe a diagnosis of narcissist would be accurate.

Thank you for this. Watching her talk always makes me angry and uncomfortable, and I couldn't believe how much of a circus act that 2016 deposition was. That trial felt so rigged if that's what they used as her testimony. She seemed arrogant like she would easily get her way and would have nothing to worry about. Someone more concerned about the outcome would have taken it more seriously.

Whenever I speak about a traumatic/hurtful experience I tend to look down and do a “half smirk”, but it’s always been a defense mechanism for me. I do it bc it stops me from having the urge to cry or get emotional. So I genuinely believe Johnny Depp when he recounts his experience.

@Tindometari3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, acting for the screen to portray a fictional character is a very, very different proposition to making a lie credible in real life. Acting generally runs off an internally-consistent prepared script that runs to a known conclusion, and doesn't deviate much from it, and everything in the film supports the fiction. Lying in real life involves improvised responses to questions that are not scripted, and the other players in the scene are doing all they can to derail any notional script you may have in your head and root out all the inconsistencies with identifiable facts. And there's no screenwriter, script editor, or director to make the scene support the fiction; facts are facts. People who think they can act their way through this are living in a fool's paradise even if they've got several Oscars on the shelf -- and Amber's nowhere near that calibre. Acting skills are a very poor preparation for this -- especially if you're trying to apply them where they aren't going to work.
@NedaMayMonadjem3 жыл бұрын
It's not that simple. I never get the "their an actor" arguement as an actor 😂 like you have weeks sometimes MONTHS to prepare for a role. And even then you're acting/living the role but there's an element of you within it. Plus you usually rehearse for hours on end with a director guiding and correcting you. I doubt she bothered to do any of that for this interview, and even if she did, it would never be to the same extent as it would be for a show, movie, or play.

It's a deposiation. I'm not sure it counts as 'in court' the same way, and doesn't exactly need to even be in a courthouse. Granted I'm not in the legal field, so I'm not sure if it's a state thing, but I have seen deposistions before with food (trail mix, or pastries), and drinks (water, coffee, OJ) that were done far away from courthouses. Not defending her, or how this all went down, I do agree that she seems like she's using eating to buy time for answers. It could have even been her lawyers advice, or could have even provided it to her for that reason.

Also another thing to note is whenever amber is “recalling” the story, the motions of her hands are not consistent with what she’s saying, so when she’s talking about getting hit she always does the actual hitting motion and so forth, but when Johnny recalls what happened, his motions and movements are consistent with what he’s saying. The vodka bottle being thrown at him is a great example. Justice for Johnny.
