Oh Amber, that is a tough decision! She is a lovely dog and has a beautiful head on her shoulders. Breeding dogs is so much work, and there are a lot of losses and no promises or 100% safe guarantees. She has a really important job, and her feeling her best is the most important thing! I support your decision wholeheartedly, and if you change your mind that’s okay too ❤️ not every awesome dog has to be bred, and that’s a hard thing to come to terms with when you see how amazing they are but you’re making the best choice for her!
@Whiskeytoller2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! That is exactly how I feel about it and it was hard because after talking with her breeder, we were both surprised she turned out as nicely as she did. But she has sisters that will carry the lines and she can continue being an awesome representation of her breed without being bred.

Thank-you for making this video (and giving it an honest, but clickbait-y title). Normalising & educating about waiting for maturity before choosing to alter a dog, and the weight and importance that goes into choosing whether or not to breed a dog, are both things that we need so much more of in the general public. It's people like you -- dog people who have a following outside of the dog world -- that can really have a huge impact.

The breeder we got our first toller from at first told us that we’d need to continue showing her (she was already 1 at the time) and to not spay her for future breeding. We said that was not in our plan and that it may just not be the best fit for everyone involved. He did end up calling us a few months later after realizing that competition and breeding were too stressful for her temperament and thought we’d be the perfect match. We did adopt her nephew a few years later and they were a funny team. I’m glad you guys are doing what’s best for Whiskey!

My service dog couldn't be fixed because she had terminal cancer, and her heat cycles were super rough. Completely changed her personality and I could tell she was uncomfortable. I wished so badly things could have been different. Where I live, service dogs actually get "certified" and one of the requirements for that is getting fixed so it was a source of heartache up until her passing. Sometimes it's just the best thing to do. Love your dog. Great name for a pup and she is gorgeous.
@magicdolphin309021 күн бұрын
where do you live? in the United States, we dont have to have certification per the ADA. I know New Zealand and Canada have stricter laws reguarding service animals, im curious where else they require documentation.
@finsterhund21 күн бұрын
@@magicdolphin3090 BC Canada. Service dogs in order to get officially certified and protected from landlord or business discrimination have to have a public access test and we get a card like a driver's license or ID. It costs like 200 dollars and is a pain in the ass. Dogs must be fixed in order to get accepted. A big hassle

It's the same thing I went through with my male Belgian Malinois. So many people get so judgemental about not desexing your puppy super young, without thinking about the possible consequences. I looked at a bunch of research, and with German Shepherds, it's better to wait until they're full grown and their growth plates are closed before surgery. Reduces dysplasia and arthritis down the line. So I figured I'd wait until he's 2, and then look at it, or even look at a vasectomy as some owners are starting to do.

I can’t imagine having a full time service dog that isn’t traditionally spayed/neutered. Their behaviour isn’t guaranteed if they’re going through a heat cycle (as you found out) or if a bitch is in heat around a service dog that has had a hormone sparing neuter. It’s not worth risking one’s life/health to potentially breed a dog in the future. My large breed Assistance/Service Dog in Training just turned two years old and I’ll be having him neutered in the very near future because he has recently displayed some very unwanted behaviours that could potentially cause either of us to end up being injured. Now that he’s finished growing getting neutered shouldn’t cause him any problems but I also know that there will be a lot of people who will take issue with it, just as there have been people who have taken issue with him still being an intact male. Those people aren’t a part of our life though so their opinions don’t matter 🤷🏻♀️ Just do what’s best for you and Whiskey 👌🏽

Yes, unless you are planning on breeding your pet on purpose. Some people with pure breeds do want to breed their pets, especially when they have great breed characteristics or great behavior and temperament.

Many of the Toller breeders do not recommend spaying before 2 years of age so they can fully develop. I used to manage a small animal hospital just outside Washington, DC and things have really changed regarding when to spay your female dog. Most experts no longer recommend 6 months of age. I have a female Toller who will be 2 this December and we will be breeding her at least once as her bloodlines can help ensure the health of the breed overall. Her sire has won at Westminster multiple times and her dam is one of 5 in the country who is certified clear of everything health-related you can test for.

I think it would be the better decision to wait more time for your final decision weather to spay or let her have babies. The heat cycles are "normal"and it's really not too hard to treat your dog with care this short time! What would you say if every girl should be spayed in the age of twelve years??? So give Whiskey and you more time to wait for this decision. Perhapps when she is five or six years old you can fix this "problem" better than now.

Ethical breeders do what they do for the love of their breeds; pairings are chosen carefully for both the preservation and improvement of the breed over all, to promote genetic diversity and maintain their unique abilities and sound temperaments. Whiskey -- and many other service dogs -- would not exist were it not for ethical breeders. They are the only thing standing between animal rights activists and the eventual endangerment of dogs as a species.
