You take OTC medications and hope this is the worst of it.” Day 3 and beyond: “While barely keeping yourself conscious at work, you get up to use the bathroom and collapse onto the floor. A colleague calls an ambulance and you are rushed to the emergency room. You have a serious infection that requires IV antibiotics and a hospital stay of a week. You feel much better after, but then you see the bill. $80,000. You will never be able to pay it off even with financial assistance. You will likely be forced to declare bankruptcy, wiping out your attempt at building good credit. Furthermore, your boss is very unhappy that you were gone for a week. Any chance of a raise is now highly unlikely. You might even get fired because your employment is “at-will”. The good news is that the profits of the company you work for are up 20%. The executives received bonuses of at least a couple hundred thousand dollars each. Also a son of one of the executives, whose work is lackluster at best, received a promotion increasing his compensation by 30%.
