Growing up, The Sims was my study game. Here's what I mean. When my sims would go to work or go to bed, I'd make sure time would stay at the slowest setting. During those times I would read, do homework, or write a report. Then of course when my sims were home and/or awake, I'd play the game. By breaking up my work with leisure, I found it easier to concentrate. And with the limited time I gave myself to work, it increased my efficency.

That 'Zero Dollar Start' reminds me of something I used to do in the Ps2 version of Sims 2. Make a scraggly character, build a 3x3, broken shack with naught but a moldy couch dragged in off the street, then run the money out buying dirt and gravel ground tiles. He'd spend his days sitting on the couch, waiting for his entry level job and struggling to fill motives until he could finally, _finally_ afford music player or drag a urinal in from...somewhere. Eventually, the menial labor nets him enough to fix the shack's broken windows, buy a plank of wood to use as a door, and even afford a small table. As this was the Ps2 version, his food needs were usually met by eating the couch stuffing, so he was at least okay on that front. He worked as a painter, so was later able to sneak paint supplies from work to paint the walls at least a little.

I loved the game SimTown (does anyone even remember that game?), saw a game called The Sims by the same developers at a Best Buy, and bought it on a whim. I did all of my homework either during my lunch break or on the bus ride home so I could play The Sims until bedtime every day for weeks on end. Why is it so hard to make friends?! I love your videos on The OG Sims because they really play on the poetic nature of the game compared to the later games. Beyond Will Wright's basic life-sim was the commentary on consumerism that you sardonically capture in your challenges. Working your way up to buy newer, better, more expensive stuff to keep your Sims happy, leveling them up to reach arbitrary goals so they can make more money, preventing all the stuff you have from being robbed or breaking down, creepy stuff like clowns and genie lamps and ghosts; your videos really tackle the essence of what Sims 1 is all about, and I love it.
