Hey guys! I’m local here in north Idaho and have build several ponds and other off grid water systems. Me and my son love to watch your videos. I just wanted to say, please plan for and build a spillway for your pond that is away from your dam. I’m happy to help. Cheers on your pond project!
@scottdm9707
@scottdm9707 22 сағат бұрын
Agreed. If the dam is overtopped during a storm after the pond is full, it will erode the dam very quickly. A common method is to install a culvert pipe at the base of the dam with a vertical riser, but a bit late for that in your case.
@traumnz
@traumnz 22 сағат бұрын
Adding a culvert for a spillway is a common thing here, however I’ve seen several fail when overrun with water during heavy rain events. I would plan at least for a 500 year flood event. I recommend designing for 1000 year flood events.

Having built several spring taps, on my ranch, when I saw one of your videos with water running down near a road, I was sure you DID have water on your land. Much better to have a spring further away from your house than the one you try to bring water from next to the building, (too much fear of contamination). Glad you found this. I pump water from several springs. remember, a small trickle, that is 1 gallon a minute, is 1300 gallons a day and that should be sufficient unless you are watering a big garden constantly. Solar pumps are the best too. they pump only during the day, but so what? put in a 1000 gallon tank below the source, and pump from that. A few things to learn, (like if there is ANY silt in the water, (most sources do) let the water flow into a 250 gallon tank first at the bottom of the tank. take off the water at the top and either do the same thing again with another 250 or if it is really clean directly into the 1000 gallon tank, then pump from that to a high tank to feed your house.

I live in an area where close to 1/2 the wells are either hand dug wells (typically 15 to 25 feet deep) or spring box wells. The well for my home is a 7 foot deep spring box that was probably dug over 100 years ago. It is about 6' away and slightly above a spring that flows year round and produces 3 gallons a minute. I have a 2,500 gallon storage tank. I used to occasionally help out a buddy who contracted to clean, repair and maintain hand dug wells & spring boxes. Our county requires that septic fields be at least 200 feet from any well or surface water. That seems to be enough to avoid E. coli but I'd assume that any well that has less than a 50' annular seal will have coliform and other potentially harmful bacteria. I believe that any water source that is used for people should be thoroughly tested and the water should receive appropriate treatment. We also have a "dry" cabin at a lake where we use the surface water. The lake is tested annually and has been shown to be reasonably clean. I boil lake water and then filter it through a carbon block cartridge before drinking.

I've directed several pond builds. A dam needs a keyway (it appears you worked on one of these) and it needs to extend not only across the bottom of the dam, but into the sides of the dam as well. Without that, water will find the seam between the virgin soil and the fill and leak there. The soil used to construct the dam needs to be compacted about every 6" and a sheepsfoot compactor is the best tool for that. You need to keep vegetation out of the dam fill, as it will rot and create "piping" through the dam. With that gravell layer you have, my guess is the water will not get much higher than that layer since the water can flow through that layer. One time we sealed a pond using bentonite. Bentonite is used to seal well casings. The scratches on the trees are called "rubs". It is where bucks during the rut (breeding season) basically have mock fights with the trees.

The layer with round rocks is alluvium (sand and cobbles), likely deposited by the stream bed that you are digging into. Alluvium is much more permeable than the sandy clay - hence the enhanced water flow. However, you'll need to dig through (deeper than) the aluvium and back into clay to build a viable core for the dam. If you can acheive that and pack in clay then I think that you'll have a nice sustained pond.
@martygrove3986
@martygrove3986 22 сағат бұрын
There's a really good chance that the gravel layer that you've dug into is itself incised in bedrock. In other words, it seems likely that the gravel layer was at the surface prior to when those corregated culvert pipes were installed and that all the dirt that you dug out of the pond site represents fill added into the creek bed after those culvert pipes were installed. The (burnt?) logs that you encountered seem to confirm that the dirt that you have excavated was placed there (i.e., is not naturally present). Moreover, since you've changed the equilibrium by digging out all the fill, I wouldn't predict that the flow rate you are seeing will be sustained (i.e., the fill permitted accumulation that won't continue to occur because the fill has been removed). So you still need a proper dam core to have a viable pond. Even though the pond is presently filling with water it likely won't sustain a level that is diserably high unless the dam core is properly excavated beneath gravel and filled with compacted clay (i.e., seals off the alluvium).

When you build your next pond build it deeper and then add some trout fingerlings ! You can go deeper by digging down to water level in fall and then go back in winter after ground is frozen. Keep peeling layers off until you hit water again and let it keep freezing! Keep a few trout over the winter by adding a solar powered bubbler :)

I would recommend creating a spot where the water can drain so it doesn't overflow, through some drain rock so if you end up putting fish in it (idk if you have mosquitos but you probably want at least some small fish to eat mosquito larvae) they don't get washed away. Also check out Ozponds to learn of to make an intake bay where you can put a pump and bog filter to help keep the water crystal clear. Even with just leaves from the trees the water will eventually become nasty and stinky, although I have never made a pong that big so it may take a while.

One of the big problems with any pond or lake is the dirt that is in the pond. If it’s gravel or sand, it will never hold water. The fact that there is an old well in the location, you are going to have problems with the water in the pond going out to the water table. One solution is to line the pond with clay ore even Bentenite.

I've built thousands of ponds, and you are on the right track. All the topsoil had to be removed. Get to the clay, then once you get it how you want it, track walk all the clay. You'll need an outlet on your dam for overflow. It's hard building a pond over a spring because you can't get in there and track walk it, you'll get stuck.

WE normally make it a T with a standpipe that goes up as a overflow at the level you desire your pond to crest.. As for the excavator overheating .. Degrease and pressure wash out your Radiator. I started by watching you tube on pond building/dam building. So I dig and built my own and now I made a business out of it. IT'S NOT WORK IF YOU LOVE IT! I have a 1996 Hitachi 200ex-3. Mine started to over heat out of the middle of no where. I went around with my laser thermometer and found my muffler was EXTREMELY HOT! In that same situation it was making my hydraulic pump extremely hot also.. so I removed the muffler and straight piped the Isuzu. The temp never gets more then 1/4 of the way up on the gauge. Sooooooo from my research the muffler will rust and carbon up, suffocating the motor. Also i need to add i was getting a lot of black smoke, and the turbo is spooling up and the smoke has cleared up. Try pulling the muffler off. Quick tip run the exhaust pipe in a way that water won't run into the turbo when not using it...... I just put a bucket over it.

Ponds are a great accessory on your property! As fish grow they can provide food, if the pond is big enough, it’ll support several good eating fish per year, and keep the mosquito population down. The only concern I have about a pond in a hillside is that what is downstream of the dam? How far can the water disperse if the pond happens to break during heavy winter storms?

You actually can put red-died diesel in your off road truck if you burn it off on your own property. Also, on a mountain you can dig a 3 foot deep lateral trench French drain that runs about 80' laterally along the hillside uphill from your pond and then install drain tile from a low point on the French drain down to the pond and it should provide all the water you need to keep it full year round (especially in a moderate rain forest area) it will catch a large cross section of water coming down the hill. (Also known as an "intercept drain")

Be sure to add an overflow pipe to set water level and prevent damn washout/failure. Great job.

You guys are nuts. Look up Jeff Lawton Pond Building, especially how he makes a swivel pipe in his dams. Basically it is a pipe through the dam, with a flange on the exterior backfilled with your best clay. You put a 90 on the pond side not glued, and insert a stand pipe. It swivels to control the pond level. Backfilling around the pipe and flange it critical. He also covers the level spillway. Good luck with that project. Hope it works out.

From having watched your channel from the time you first moved onto your property until now I would say, yes, Riley is going to get something stuck.

You should make the dam large and wide enough to maintain with a mower or bush hog. When digging, go as deep as possible, but stop when you hit clay. Think of it like a pool liner.

Good job guys but I would like to see you do some more work on this project, really enjoy watching you guys work on these projects, great teamwork always. If this is in a creek bed consider this, as water goes downhill if it goes over a spillway it will gouge the downhill side out if it is too narrow, but a concave road through it would give it a floodway with a narrow base at the lower level that could expand as the flow rate increases. I put a 900mm (3 foot) round pipe in the base of a smallish creek with 2 foot of road base and rock over it for a road crossing 20 years ago, I paved the banks with rocks and hand mix concreted them in just to help lock them together and it has lasted well through torrential downpours flowing several feet over the road and crossing. Where the 900mm pipe water exited under the road, it gouged out a huge natural pond 8 feet deep as it got shallower at the downward end due to gravel/sand drift from occasional floods, keep this principle in mind as you build your pond and it may help it last longer without silting up with debris as much. Cheers

One of my job for the world largest retirement community in FL. I built many retention ponds. We ran in to under ground rivers that had to deal with and we had problems down river line. They dyed up and the land drop Which in turn had to bring truck loada dirt. Be careful.

If there is lightning, please dont stay in your machinery as that can be struck, the sand that you hit below the clay is your water course, the Well is a great indicator for the depth of the pond. goodluck.

When you are using a chain to pull, make sure to stand so you aren't in line with the chain. A broken link could easily cause a serious injury.

You may need to become familiar with Bentonite if you are not already. I live in an area dominated by sandy soils. Bentonite (a clary) is used as an admixture to help ponds retain water.
