The early HyP games are wild! The first two books had 5 unique versions each (GBA, GBC, PS1, PC and Ps2/GC/Xbox) and each unique version was made by a different developer. The PS1 games were made by Argonaut (Star Fox) and the music for them was done by elder scrolls composer Jeremy Soule. Not to mention they're early enough to be based on the books rather than the movies so they take all kinds of weird creative liberties.

@granvillimus4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexRN Developers and even Nintendo themselves seemed eager to leave N64 behind. In contrast, PS1 was STILL popular in 2001 (PS2 was also back compatible). Porting the PS1 version's voice acting to N64 would have been difficult too. They'd either need to cut the voices or use a large pricey cartridge, perhaps hire Factor 5 to help compress it. I kinda miss the era when handheld ports would be significantly different from their console/PC counterparts (I'm not sure if "port" is even the right word for these games, they're often SO different), even if most of them weren't that great. The Japan-only 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI is the only notable game of that ilk I can think of from the last decade, though thankfully the Switch version later inherited the 2D campaign from it. I would've loved to have gotten the 3DS's low poly 3D campaign too, because I am a tremendous weirdo.

I dont know if Daikantana, or the Harry Potter games for that matter, can actually be defined as a "port." It sounds more like original games created within their respective series. The N64 version of Daikantana was a port of the pc version. Great video though, love these games. If you want Diablo on GBA, check out Lord of the Rings Two Towers and Return of the King. Probably worthy of a separate video.
@SumeaBizarro4 жыл бұрын
The N64 version is kinda sorta port of the PC version in sense. Daikatana did Duke Nukem Forever and changed to Quake 2 engine almost as quickly as it came out and there exists a beta build of Daikatana that is based on quake 1 engine for the PC that some Daikatana fans (they exist) think warmly about. Turns out, N64 version was ported from that Quake 1 engine version and made closer to PC version but still include major map design differences, missing maps and so on. Graphics also are very different as PC daikatana at the end is more of a PS2 era game graphically. In fairness; he said these are not necessarily recreation of the same game but a game that captures the spirit of the main title and still have the same title. Daikatana actually fits that perfectly as your characters actually level through it's story and they enhance your FPS gameplay abilities like speed, damage, melee strength and so on. the style DK GBC is in and even includes GBC renditions of the same music that exists for original Daikatana is also funny.

There used to be a dev who worked on the Harry Potter GBC titles on the resetera forums (or maybe it was neogaf) and I remember reading in a thread that they absolutely loved working on those games because they weren't EA's primary focus at all since they were pushing the GBA and console versions. As a result, the devs were basically not micromanaged whatsoever by the publisher, and they were basically free to do their own thing, which was awesome since a lot of them were Harry Potter fans. That's also why they're closer to the books than the movies, since they weren't being micromanaged. I liked reading his stories about the game and I think he had even posted about a few Easter eggs they had hidden in them.

Oh man, I remember those Harry Potter games, nostalgia galore. It was fun, I think, but probably doesn't hold up if you aren't a fan.

Twice you made me think of my gaming experiences in the 2000s. Daikatana being better on GBC than PC reminded me of Astroboy on GBA being MUCH better than it's PS2 counterpart. Your comparison to getting Harry Potter on GBC over GTA VC, MP, or RE remake reminded me of waiting on a line at a Dragon's Den hobby shop and the first 3-4 people in front of me asked the cashier for Vice City and when it was my turn, the cashier asked "Vice City?" and I replied "Oh no. Doom II" as Doom II had released the same month on GBA as Vice City. I felt so out of place that I chose a port of a mid 90s game over the then hyped up Vice City. Lol. Then again, I didn't own a PS2 so um, yeah. Good video. Thumb up/like.

Ah man I played the crap out of the GBC Chamber of Secrets game. I replayed it so many times up to the spider boss, which took me forever to beat. It was a huge difficulty spike for 6-7 year old me so i eventually got fed up and just started repeatedly replaying the game up to that point so i could have some variety. I eventually got to the basilisk but honestly I dont remember if I managed to ever beat it.

The Harry Potter GBC games are unironically some solid RPG games

It's definitely indentation. Indention is archaic 👍

2:08 - It's true that Perfect Dark has an insane amount of fidelity for a GBC game, but a correction mate; it's a 32 mega*bit* cart, not 32 mega*byte*. Using megabytes, it's 4MB. Pretty impressive honestly.

32 MegaBIT dingus. No GBC carts were that huge.

Yes some recognition to the GBC Harry Potter games! I played them a lot when I was a kid but man it was so rough playing it again recently. But one main thing I loved from the games was the music.

That "Hello fellow kids" edit pretty much sums up why I like this channel so much
