I raced a big bad orange Javelin in 1969. I ran at Motor City dragway in the old AHRA E stock optional automatic class. It was mostly 383 Mopar and 396 Chevelle's. It was fun surprising them with a Rambler. Won lots of class elimination trophies and winner stickers.

Some (too many) aftermarket cam gears get this wrong and cause distributor drive gear failure. To br sure it's right. Always use the Rollmaster p/n CS7110. It's a dual rollerchain type and as a bonus allows minor advance setup. Works great and no oiler mods needed.

BTW the bores need to be notched on a 290 - 304 when using 360 heads because the larger valves won't clear the bore .
@leonardwalters154 Жыл бұрын
Love the fact that you are building the little 304's,everyone else thinks they are boat anchors, but that little engine is one of the most reliable I have ever owned, even at -10or-20 below 0 they have always started and ran with out a problem 😊😊

We always like doing things a little.. off, plus they are actually cool little motors. With all the abuse we have put the 304 in the AMX through it's time to build a bit more of a "fun one" to see how that goes but we aren't looking to squeeze every ounce of power out of it. We drive our stuff so it NEEDS to work... and work... and work!

...pistons .026 down plus the head gasket thickness ? Seems like a ton of quench distance...
@LucoreAuto Жыл бұрын
We'll see how this works, we may end up swapping out to a thinner head gasket if we have to. Trying to get away with it as is and hopefully be able to run pump gas AND beat the heck out of it.
@rolliefoster2837 Жыл бұрын
...sorry if my comment came off wrong, was not my intent...I'm a SBF guy & they do NOT like excessive quench ! Carbon buildup happens rather quickly & then you are fighting detonation no matter the static compression ratio - they seem to be pretty happy at .035 quench with the gasket bore .020 larger than the cylinder bore - spending $200 for custom MLS head gaskets has been money well spent for my projects ! Best of luck & really, really love this channel content !

I had a 1972 Javelin SST that had a 304 in it. I yanked it and built a 360 to drop in it. Bottom end and top end. Got 425HP at the rear wheels when I was done. Great fan of AMC performance. It's really nice seeing people do AMC instead of all camaro's and chevelles for a change.

My 428cj ran forged 12:5 to 1 domed pistons from TRW which are no longer available. With the heads shaved it was about 13:75 to 1 compression ratio and was on a diet of 106 octane low lead aviation gas. I remember getting compliments from the guy doing a front end alignment after rebuilding the front suspension with new manual steering gear box. I am gear head enough myself to admit that gas smelt good. The paint marking is a really good idea. I could have used that idea when adjusting the flat tappet solid lifter camshaft.

Did you have to machine the pedestals on the heads for the 302 roller rockers or are they a direct bolt on?
@LucoreAuto Жыл бұрын
Direct bolt on just need the right size studs. Fortunately that's a simple enough fix with about $100 worth of ARP bits 👌
@aprilsfoolracing4594 Жыл бұрын
@@LucoreAuto what 360 heads are that if You don't need to machine the rocker pedestals? If anybody are doing the rocker swap and have to machine the pedestals BE AWARE when machining those that are for the 2 center exhaust rockers,it can be tempting to run the mill straight over from the first to the other one DO NOT DO THAT!!! "ask me how I know" AMC heads are the only one's I know of that has a water channel above the 2 exhaust runners where the EGR channels to the intake goes... And finaly : guide plates, DO NOT belive those sellers that says You can use Pontiac guide plates on an AMC,that's not true,they will not line up at all and to use them You have to cut them apart to align them and then weld them together again... There are seller on E'Bay that sells correct ones,and they are a perfect fit for alignment and they are pretty cheap to buy.

I do not know what part number their 360 heads are but the heads with the part number that ends with 502(1974 360/401 heads) flows 226 cfm@ 28" of water @.500 lift on the intake (228cfm@ .600 lift)absolutely untouched,and if You know what You are doing they can be ported to around 300 cfm,but again "IF You know what YOU are doing" it's easy to go wrong when porting a AMC head,they are NOT Chebby heads...

See? You think just like I do. I really enjoy building engines that no one else shows any attention to just because there's an easier option for power. People call me crazy for this dream, but I have ALWAYS wanted to build a Buick Straight Eight and figure out a way to design a crossflow head, design a sheetmetal intake manifold with multi-port injection (one injector per cylinder), a huge throttle body, design a two-piece long tube header for it, bore and stroke it to the max, and put a large turbocharger on it. Don't ask me why I want to build that engine combo, but I just think it'd be awesome to build that engine and mate it to a Tremec TKO.
@LucoreAuto Жыл бұрын
Well there's nothing wrong with being crazy 🤪 OR doing things differently than "normal"! Cheap easy and common is boring! Fortunately for us, MOST of the AMC stuff is still reasonably findable. Bored and stroked straight 8 Buick would certainly be a WHOLE lot more custom!
