Ingenious! I'm not going to lie, the instant I saw that you were going to cannibalize a cast iron topped table saw, I got a bit grumpy but you've won me over with your ingenuity and the willingness to use all of the parts and not just scavenge the top.

Love this idea. I've been looking at the pro ones and they start around $1000. I just love to tinker and will be doing things around the homestead. Also being a knife maker, the idea of making a belt grinder is appealing so I am going to start keeping my eyes open for a old table saw. Ideas for improvements: Use wing nuts on your stops for ease of use and maybe epoxy the bolt on the inside so it's 'captive'. Add a set of wheels on one end and either removable legs or have them shaped like "H" and have them fold toward each other but one nest inside the other and be able to use the wheels to cart it like a wheelbarrow. That would allow you to roll it around alone and probably get the non-wheeled end up onto the tailgate to then pull it into the bed of a pickup.

I chuckled when I saw the saw! I have been using my Craftsman table saw top (identical to this one) as a flat welding table for years. I didn’t take it off the stand but reinforced that to keep it more ridged. Yes you do have to keep it clean or you have some small barbecues! I would like to see a belt sander made too.

I bought an 8’x5’ welding table with schedule 80 frame and it’s too big for my shop. So I have a welding table in my driveway outside the barn…which is kind of handy when I’m working on our heavy equipment…all for 130 on craigslist! Great Idea…many of us have one of these laying around! And you get to use the electric motor for something else! You can also use the elevation and tilt mechanisms for special weld positioners.

Picked up my third free saw total area is 11' x 27" lines up and 352 pounds mix of solid deck and grid. I'm thinking solid as the "main table" surfaces and grids can quick connect for reconfigurations as needed. One of the three motors has a wire wheel on the shaft and had sketchy wiring via extension cord to glass fuses in a breaker box. I may have saved a life getting that apart.

I like your idea repurposing the cast iron table saw top. Then recognizing the potential of the remaining parts to be used in the belt sander project. A nice 1hp 1ph 110v 60hz 1750rpm electric motor is very useful, and new they're over a hundred bucks.

Awesome repurpose. People sometimes do not know what they throw away or get rid off. The older equipment is much better then newer ones, more solid. I've come across a lot of good stuff I have repurposed in so many ways, so this video is right up my alley. But this is an awesome way to make a welding table. I just started welding and came across this video. You grabbed my attention by the build under $30 title, I thought you were going to use some thick ply and cover it with a sheet metal, even doing that can be expensive when you purchase raw materials.
@francoisbouvier7861 Жыл бұрын
Not sure if the old stuff is necessarily better. I'll definitely vouch that it's heavier. Usually a plus. Found my last cast top saw at the garbage transfer station. That'll make four as now, highest $= $30. Router table, designated tenon cutter for log rails/furniture.
