I had an ASUS K7M back in the day, never had an actual Slot-A processor for it though... We used an adapter card to use Socket-A chips. Never knew about multiplier/voltage connection though, that's pretty cool... Back then we just used a pencil to mod that stuff on the socket A chips. lol Good stuff!
@justinholmes56145 жыл бұрын
I’d forgotten about the pencil trick ! Joining those little gold dots to change the multiplier. I miss those days
@SSC30344 жыл бұрын
What was the adapter? According to the Wikipedia page on "Slotkets" they never made a Socket A to Slot A adapter
@SeishukuS124 жыл бұрын
@@SSC3034 Now that you mention that and doing a Google search, I can't find anything... So now I'm doubting my memory. lol I'm pretty sure we had a Socket-A to Slot-A adapter though, also had a few Socket-370 to Slot-1 adapters too (because P3 on some old P2 systems). I want to say it was an ASUS branded adapter, but might have been the mobo... That was 20 years ago, so I'm not really sure. :D

The orignal .25um Argon Athlon's were quite impressive when they launched. They dropped before Intel could release Coppermine and Katmai just got routed. It is amazing to see the difference from it to Thunderbird. AMD was close to releasing TB first in a socket but went Slot A to get the chip out sooner.

Would a comparison of TB to Pluto at a slightly lower clock be more comparable you figure? since the cache divider of the 750 was 2/5 instead of 1/2 if I rem correctly. The 700 is the highest clock that ran at 1/2 divider.
@ccanaves Жыл бұрын
Definitely, I was about to ask for the same. At 700 the difference would be smaller. The faster you clock them, the bigger the difference.

On second thought, maybe that's why I've never seen one, lol. These were far less common than Intel slot 1 chips (back in the day I remember knowing a single guy who had one) and even those are getting rare nowadays... Oh and sdram sticks with heatsinks! Another thing I've never seen, not even on pictures! Man, where do you dig all this stuff up?

The slot A 750Mhz AMD Athlon was the first PC CPU ever running at 1Ghz by being overclocked and running on a custom case that had a no frost fridge cooling the heatsink, can remembet the name of the case but I actually used one of these, the system actually waited for the CPU to be at least at 0C before actually starting up the mobo. Oh the case was a Cryotek!

Nice video as always ;) People seem to forget Slot A but back in the days, they were very competitive as performance per price, especially when there was a shortage of Pentium III in late 1999- early 2000. Although the problem of this architecture was the L2 cache speed, the overclockability of those chips was really nice. Athlons 1ghz Thunderbird in slot A seem very rare nowadays, how did you managed to get one ? If I remember well, the 1ghz model was only use by OEM, but I don't know what PC models used it

What's the best graphics card to use with an ASUS K7V-T motherboard and Windows XP? I'm using a 1GHZ Thunderbird Slot A CPU and 1.5GB of RAM. And I'm using a GeForce 6200 card right now, but what is the most efficient graphics card to use with this setup? AGP card or PCI?
@Erik.Lundberg2 жыл бұрын
This motherboard seem to have a later revision of the AMD 751 north bridge because it support Super Bypass. Does it also work with AGP 2X?
@RETROHardware2 жыл бұрын
from review, it is rev 1.04 ... I have a couple of these MBs all same revs "The AGP slot on the K7M is a standard 3.3v AGP 2X slot, while the AMD 751 North Bridge used on the K7M does not support AGP 4X, from our testing the performance increase provided for by AGP 4X over AGP 2X is negligible and there isn't a single AGP 4X graphics card available on the market today that doesn't work in an AGP 2X slot."
