FX6300 user here, since 2015. Cost me cheap-ish with 16 gigs on a Sabertooth 990FX which is a pretty awesome mobo. I believe my chip is above average, as I'm getting a 4.3GHz 24/7 stable @ 1.28v. I can go 4.7 @ 1.4v but I don't want to push voltage that high. I use it for photo editing, video editing, website management and various other tasks including gaming on an RX480. It has never let me down so far and next year I'll be upgrading to a R5 2600 or 3600 as it's kinda slow on the video editing/encoding/rendering part. Otherwise I'm pretty happy, especially for the money I spent. Love the vid Phil!

I ended up with a spare AM3+ mobo last year and bought one of these. My first instinct was to get a Phenom II X6, but even the cheapest one (1035T) was more expensive than the FX-6300. I have two AMD processors in use. My triple-core with my Linux build is my daily driver. I just can't find any set up faster and more responsive that's in my budget range. I'm not a platform snob, I respect intel and Windows both, I just get weary of the issues that seem to crop up with those two (maybe just my bad luck). My 775, (thanks to Phil's tutorials on updating bios code) is humming right along and is my secondary daily + light gaming machine. When my budget increases in the near future I plan on building a a full Ryzen system with Linux and Windows running strictly in a VM. So I can work and play on the same machine. If the project fails or doesn't work as I intended I still have my back-up machines. Thank for all you do Phil! I look forward to every video!

watching this on an Fx 4100 and I am happy with it for now. Not really a gamer and I am running Linux and it is great for photography workstation and light gaming. I find the lawsuit rather silly since there is first off no standardization for what a multi core processor even is and there have been many design changes over nearly 20 years. Feels like AMD got blamed for people not doing their research and blaming them for trying different CPU designs that did not always work out as the best option in hindsight. I mean I don't recall Intel facing a lawsuit for the mess that was the pentium D.

I built a FX system (8350) earlier in the year and it's turned into one of my favorite systems to use when streaming PC games that are more than a few years old. It handles them well, even up to stuff like DOOM 2016 that you mentioned. It makes for a great indie game or emulation box as well (really surprised at how well this thing handles Dreamcast!), and it's also a strong box for stuff like classic FPS source ports and mods (Doom, Quake, Blood, etc). For people that like to have various generations of hardware built and ready to go for one reason or another, it can be worth having one of these around.

Not even in my worst nightmare I could have imagined that my current CPU will actually be in Phil's video. Pro tip: don't use Windows 7 or older OS with it, unoptimized scheduler can tank your performance. Windows 7 only had partial and incomplete fix. You can see what I mean in CPU-Z benchmark.

@@TSteffi I have Athlon X4 870K in another PC and Win7, in CPU-Z benchmark it really suffers. I have another PC witn Win10 and Athlon X4 845 and it beats 870K. There may be some tools to sort of fix this problem, but it will never be a truly good fix. Compatibility is genuinely great, and while they aren't blazing good performance, they are still capable in six or eight thread variations. I wouldn't reccomend buying FX or AM3+ if you have other options, but they can still get up and work hard when the need arises for both gaming and productivity alike.

jangelelcangry Well if it has drivers support then theres no problem. Still you wont see any difference in performance with anything that runs on XP. From that point of view it becomes kind of a waste, same as if you had windows 95 support too. I doubt space cadet running at 9001 fps would feel any different xD Its been a while since ive seen games that could run on anythin before win7, even retro ones which could run fine on a core 2 duo. I actually had to dig archives last time i built an xp machine to find software that would even install. Now that i think about it a core 2 quad is overkill. You can do win7 no problem on one of those. Core 2 duo @ 3.5GHz should run better on XP wich wasnt optimized for multi core cpus nor had any software that used more than 2.

@@MJ-uk6lu Not really, increasing the frequency of RAM and CPU NB significantly improves the frame time, the memory subsystem works much faster (this is a weak point of the FX architecture), but you won’t get more FPS, but avoid stators and FPS drops. An increase in the frequency of nuclei also will not give a significant increase since the processing power of one FX core is less than that of Phenom 2. In FX, the core frequency is already large enough and 4.2 is more than enough to avoid overheating.

@AleksSDF Indeed. Other CPU's might be faster, but if you have a good board with M.2 SSD and enough RAM, a FX-8350 still makes a nice system for work or play. I have mine cooled with a 240mm AIO, so it also runs very quiet. That is the only downside, the FX boxed coolers sound like jet engines when they ramp up. And you need to have beefy VRMs on the board. A cheap AM3 board will barely handle the FX-6300, let alone the 8350. I would reccomend getting a board that is rated to support the FX-9590 with 220W. Even if you only get the 8350, you will have more headroom.

Yes, the FPU is shared, so hardware FPU operations will stall but many older CPUs did not even have an FPU, and those are still considered a CPU. Some workloads highly stress multi-core FPU, and these people suffered, but I imagine many games and most regular programs of the time probably did not.
