I just finished a budget HEDT build. (yeah I know, the world budget and HEDT don't normally go together) I'm running a Threadripper 1950X on a X399 phantom gaming 6, with 32 gigs of ram and an RX 5600XT Thicc Pro. I still have to assemble the server rack and get my man cave sorted out, so no bench marks yet.

Hi Franklin, awesome video, wasn't expecting to see benchmarks of the rx 5600 with FCPX on youtube, so thank you very much. If you don't mind I have a couple of quick questions: Do you think the rx 5600 is worth it on a 2015 Macbook Pro with its poor m370x for FCPX? I'll be coupling it with the Razer Core X (and Purge Wrangler to unable TB2 support). I'm an editor and I've been struggling with painful FCPX lag when using animations and heavy effects/transitions etc. Would I be seeing significant improvement in overall editing and rendering compared to my current m370x? I'll also be using it for some AAA gaming under Bootcamp. Thank you so much in advance!

Hey, so yes you would see an improvement but only slightly, and to be honest with you its not worth it for the very small performance gain, I would save that money and put it towards a new laptop.

The 5600xt TB2 benchmarks on egpu.io show amazing results in Catalina, and in some games over Bootcamp there's almost no difference with a TB3 setup. So can you explain? I already ordered the setup and will do tests next week.

Liked and subscribed! Is Adobe not worth testing? I have a Hackintosh at High Sierra with a GTX 1070 Ti, and I'm in a pickle since I have to switch to AMD AND a different program (FCPX or Resolve) if I want to upgrade to Catalina [Nvidia cards no longer supported]. Do you think it's worth the change?

Thank you for the sub and welcome to the channel, Honestly, Id say yes lol, Catalina has so many great features and support for the latest applications. But I will say newer hackintoshes have lots of limitations, so if you somehow magically got it to run stable id be careful about making any changes

Hey Franklin, thx a million for these informative videos! Question. I have a MacBook Pro with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB card. I assume that upgrading to 5600XT + EGPU should give me a massive boost in graphics power (unlike the difference between the 5600XT and the newer 16 inch MacBook Pro). Would you agree? Also considering the PowerColor 5700XT. Oh and mostly considering the EGPU for FCPX :D

Hey Frederik, yes that's correct, it's much more effective if you don't have a discrete graphics card already, just make sure to go into FCX and set the options to use the egpu and you should see a big dif in performance

Franklin is right. The difference is massive. Even a measly RX 560 (standard with Sonnet Breakaway Puck) doubles the performance of my Iris 655 Plus in BruceX. Real-time rendering in FCPX is much smoother as well. And while I don't have an RX 5600 XT, should be able to test its smaller sibling, RX 5500 XT 8GB in a week or two. One thing to note though, apart from 5700 series, 5500 and 5600 cards aren't doing well with Metal API, or even OpenCL, in macOS. By comparison, RX 570 scores about 1.5x higher in GB Compute under macOS, despite being slower on paper. My guess would be poor driver optimization, which to date, leaves much room for improvement.

I'm in the market for the same setup I know the EGPU plus 5600xt card won't magically make everything faster, but I know it will help/renders and previews, so that's a plus @franklin reid - did you find that the machine itself ran better and wasn't bogged down while exporting? My biggest issue is not the speed of exports, rather, the fact that my machine is unusable for even answering a Slack or switching to a browser while exporting. I was hoping an EGPU would help.

So my findings were that the internal GPU/CPU were taxed less as they pushed most of the workload of just running the UI/UX of applications especially on my Dual 4K monitor setup, renders while they took similar amounts of time also seemed to tax the CPU less and it didn't thermal throttle as much. So those were some other benefits,

I am thinking about buy the 5600 XT over the 5700 XT because the 200 dollar price difference after taxes included. I'am concerned that the 5600 XT is not one of the recommend graphic cards to be used with FCP. Were there any issues you saw when using the 5600 XT and did you have it in a EGPU? I will be running it in a Razor Core X.

Hey Brad, you are correct its not on the listed of supported devices but it does come up as a Navi 10 GPU so it should work ok. And yes I did had it in an eGPU enclosure, the sonnet eGPU break away box to be exact.

Sir, Can You suggest me the cheapest and Powerful eGPU Solution for my current Macbook Pro? Please, I'm searching everywhere but can't find any solution. I Bought a Macbook Pro 15" 2016 Touchbar model with Radeon Pro 455 which has 2 gigs of terrible VRAM. I Don't wanna buy I new one because I've just Started University with "Computer Science & Information Systems" subject, I don't think I won't be able to do much 3D rendering among with some more GPU heavy works.
