That’s a big reason why there are so many advances in graphics cards and processors because that is where the majority of the market is and that would explain why so many reviews are gaming focused.

For me is worth it. I use my pc for music production and video editing, and light gaming, at first I was using a ryzen 7 3700x. But now I got my hands on a Ryzen 9 5950x, and let me tell you, the difference is day and night, I can move faster without having to wait 15 minutes to render a 4K video, now I can get it done in 5 minutes, and then move to my next project. I got the 5950x over the 5900x because the extra cores, I use so many plugins and virtual instruments while I'm mixing a costumer's project, such like compressors, pitch plugins, reverts...ect. the type of plugins that I use can max out to 100% an 8 core CPU easy, plus having to mix the vocals in the same project really put a lot of stress on the CPU some people masteries and mix the beat on one project and then use the whole beat and move to another project to mix it with the vocals. But that's not efficient and time consuming, because if lets say that you finish the whole project like that (mixing the vocals ) and then want to make some changes to the beat only, then you have to go back to the old project (if you haven't delete it) and then make changes to the beat, and then mix it again with the vocals. That's time consuming. But with this beast of a CPU I can mix the beat and the vocals in the same project and my CPU will handle the load. The load of a game is nothing compare to this type of projects. One more thing if you just planning on making beats, an 8 core CPU will be just fine, but when you start getting into the more professional aspect of music, you will need expensive software, and hardware. ( in case some in the comments be like: "oh but 8 core is just fine for music") no is not, if you work professionally and time is money.

About a month ago, I upgraded my Ryzen 5 3600 and b450 mobo to a 5900x and an Aorus Master B550 mobo. The uplift was massive. I considered the 5950x, but these days the 5900x is available for around $340 USD, while the 5950x is around $550 USD, and the extra spend didn't seem worth it. I was afraid to watch this video, for fear that I'd end up regretting not spending the extra money for the 5950x. I'm relieved to see that I probably made the right decision! Very glad to see the perspective of a creator - the 5900x and 5950x are almost certainly overkill for gaming, but for video editing/exporting/converting, it makes a world of a difference. Also regarding cooling, I can largely confirm what you've explained in the video. I started with a Thermalright Peerless Assassin SE, and under extreme artificial loads like Cinebench, max temps were around 81 C. That btw is WITH PBO and CPB enabled. For reasons that aren't terribly interesting, I ended up swapping that out for a Corsair 360 AIO, and under the same load my max temps are around 80. The temperature differences are negligible, but the sound difference is night & day. The AIO runs so much quieter than the air cooler did.

One use case for the higher cores/ threads would be software development with multiple vms/ containers/ clusters. A typical setup might be one cluster/ 2 nodes for each of database, web server, internal queues and cache stores, distributed storage, monitoring tools etc. It can easily put 10-12 cores to use and leave 4 cores for other tasks like web browsing including youtube/ downloads/ photo editing. So basically the use case for a 5950x over a 5900x is as a low cost Threadripper 😀 Now, the clusters could also be rented out on AWS or Azure, but there are people who would like to run prototypes locally without involving a 3rd party.

Like your creator content very much. Unfortunately, 3D rendering falls short in your content. Content creation is more than just photo and video editing. You should also consider e.g. Blender, Vray and Corona benchmarks in your tests. Especially in this comparison here, the 4 cores make a big difference in 3D rendering.

is there a percievable difference in timeline playback / scrubbing in Resolve? I don't care about render times that much. I wonder if the x3d variant would beat them both in scrubbing, because in render it's worse for sure.

Thank you for another real life oriented review. Well made and to the point. as ever. I have been looking to upgrade my ten year old system for about a year. And thanks to you, among others, I had set my sights on the 5900x. Hoping for a good Black friday/Black week offer to make it more affordable. Turned out they had such a good deal on the 5950x that I couldn't pass it up. There was almost no price difference. It was a no brainer. I just love the great value you can get during generation changes. 😁

With all due respect, what you fail to mention, is that a 16 Core CPU will have more cores available for you to do // tasks while a render is going on, while the 12 core might already be loaded to then neck, and you will have to wait for your renders to finish before doing other jobs in // (mail / web). You don't 1) either to renders, or 2) either browse the web. Let's get real.

@@theTechNotice Houuuuups :-). Thank you for your kind note. Your certainly did. What I felt you were a lot focusing on use cases where people either render, or work with Office type software. A CPU with "too many" cores can also be used to perform 2 renders at the same time, so at the end, I feel there is really no reason not to get 16 instead of 12 cores. I really appreciate the time you took to make this video, as I was really wondering about the result :-). Great job !!! Looking forward to your incoming publications ;)

For just watching movies, surfing the net, & playing most of the latest games at max settings an 8-core cpu is fine, for everything else a 12-core cpu will get the job done. But if you want to multi-task speedily under a heavy load, the 16-core/32 thread's cpu is the way to go.

Great video! I am still thinking about upgrading to one of these. On the other hand m1x is just behind the corner. My mate got m1 mb pro and playback performance is amazing without the need of getting into proxies/optimized media. I am still running on 1080ti which has limited support for hardware decoding. Getting 3080 (whatever the ti/lhr/etc version) still cost ~2k $ here, which is the price of the m1 mb. On top of that you can take it anywhere with you. I can't do it with my 20kg rig :P.... tough decision to make - I only work with video, davinci resolve.
@theTechNotice3 жыл бұрын
Stay tuned regards the M1x stuff, reviews and tests coming out on the channel. But right now I can suggest you think if you need the editing on the go or not, coz if you don't you can get a LOT more powerful stationary PC that wipes the floor with M1, not sure what the M1x will look like yet, stay tuned :) But since you're using Resolve, which is well optimised for M1, it's not a bad contender, so I understand your frustration :)
@sviraz3 жыл бұрын
@@theTechNotice I wonder if Apple paid Blackmagic to optimize Davinci for OSX/M1 chip. Other companies did similar things in the past, like Intel with “Cripple AMD” :P But putting aside conspiracy theories, I guess with new Apple silicon, developers had to deal with a single chip only. We could as well try to compare games on PC vs consoles running on the same hardware, where console games can be optimized as they don't have to run on X number of different cpu's, gpu's, mobo's combos, so it must be more difficult to optimize software for windows/linux, given the various hardware these OS's are running on. Back to your question, is mobility a must? no, but it would be nice add-on - I could sift through entire footage while sitting outside on the sunny day, then go back inside and continue edit on the proper monitor. At the end of the day I will have to make a choice - I expect 5900x to be 1/5th of the price of the 14/16" m1x Price difference could cover new camera body, upcoming mavic 3 pro, you name it

First I had an r7 2700 8 core, the best I could get out of it was x264 fast in OBS. Then I got a 5900x and it could easily do x264 slow all day long. Finally I just got a 5950x thinking l could go down another level or two to x264 slower/est... But guess what... It can't, without dropping at least 50% of frames. It'll do slow with any x264 option I throw at it, but it won't touch slower. Considering it's got another 4 cores it's quite disappointing, diminishing returns I guess?

At the moment I;m running 10 years old rig, i5 3570 with DDR3. I hit the roof like a year ago and now time is to change. Today difference in price in my country between 5900x (that was my plan) and 5950X is $166 (27% diff). It is not minor, as it is a cost of say 32GB 3200CL16 mem or ALF II 360 AIO.
