The reason manufacturer doesn't undervolt the processor is that, like you said in the video, the amount of offset your specific unit can work with at max performance depends on your specific unit's build and silicon quality. So they can't just use a 30 or 20 value for all units since they might be unstable on some purchases and they sure can't sit and test and undervolt each individual unit. Even if they did since the specifications would vary they couldn't sell them as the same chip.

Incredible temperature/performance improvements for me. I'm fortunate enough that my 7900X could do a -30 offset, clearing Cinebench in both tests splendidly, and 20 mins of Small FFT Prime95 before adjusting PPTs or thermal limits, holding at 95/96C. Keeping -30 offset, but changing my PPT to 180, and thermal limit to 85C, my performance in Cinebench Multicore was only ~200 lower than the score with only -30 offset, and single core was practically identical with 1 point difference. Mind you, this was still higher than my stock score, though I forgot to save an image of the exact number. Additionally, I ran another 20 min Prime95 test successfully at 85/86C, so it seems decently stable at these settings. My computer is even quieter, seemingly due to reduced heat for the fan curve to deal with. Not sure how else I might consider optimizing it from here (maybe to regain that ~200 point multi-core Cinebench score drop somehow), but I'm pleased with the results. Terribly useful guide, thank you!

AMD (and intel) have the power set overly high in order to increase yield. Some chips which are of borderline silicon quality can pass spec if they are juiced heavily. But most chips can run the clock curve with less power. Even the 'borderline' silicon ones will last longer and work better just going slightly slower at lower power (if your chip doesn't like undervolting, lower it's max clock cap a bit).
@Nicolas11x12English
@Nicolas11x12English Жыл бұрын
So true.
@kathrynck
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
@@Nicolas11x12English If anything, I think they're actually sacrificing max-benchmarks in order to achieve max yield. Both companies are juicing the chips above ideal power for benchmarking (for _most_ of the chips), in order to get borderline silicon to pass minimum spec. It's a sign that supply/demand is heavy on demand, and yield rate is of high concern at these new node sizes. But if anyone lost the silicon lottery, and has a chip which doesn't undervolt well... it's still worth undervolting, but they'll want to knock the max clock down a couple hundred Mhz. at 5 Ghz, a 200 mhz underclock is only a 4% drop, and could allow those chips to undervolt, and make them last much longer, burn less energy, make less heat, and probably run more stable. So pretty much 'everyone' should be undervolting. It's just that an unfortunate few will want to also underclock slightly. It may suck to know you were jipped out of 4% more performance than most who bought one, but that's really not going to be noticeable. And leaving it juiced super-heavily, it'll run overly hot, fry-away the thermal paste way too quickly, & wear out much too soon. Whereas if corrected, it'd be a barely noticeable difference. I have a 1080 Ti Strix in my older computer. It was not stable at the factory overclock (9% over FE). I lost the silicon lottery. I felt disappointed of course. But I de-tuned it to about 6% over FE, and it performed flawlessly for 6 years and about 20,000 hours of heavy abuse, and it still works like new. My "badly binned silicon" graphics card has been the most reliable and best performing graphics card I've owned, because it was corrected. And as a user experience, I did not really notice the difference between 109% of default spec, and 106%. It can _still_ match a 3060 Ti (no ray tracing obviously though). I only built a new computer cuz my 4790 was starting to really struggle, and I wanted to go 4k. The "badly binned" 1080 Ti was (is) still running like a champ for 1440p-raster.

@@XASMATV. If you haven't already, install Ryzen master and open it. On the basic view page, "curve optimizer mode" select "all cores", then "start optimizing". This will take at least 30 minutes, but will select the best voltage curve for each core...it's possible it will find each core can handle the maximum value of -30 (remember this for the future, if you update the BIOS you need to set this again) You need to restart to apply these changes, while at it, select the "Auto OC" and now your CPU will run faster but cooler.

My 7900X at stock/idle wanted to idle at 52C just sitting in bios. PBO -20 by itself dropped that to 42C. Room temp was 25C so the delta was +27 C down to +17~ish C. Benchmarks were slightly "better" with undervolt (it bounced off the thermal throttle less). 7900 non-x might have a bit better power curve tweaking out of the box, just because it came out month's later, and after customers kinda taught AMD how to tweak it properly. I have a 420mm water radiator on it (3x140mm fans). Interestingly the water temps don't rise very easily (just a huge amount of thermal mass & heat-soak in such a big radiator). Considering how slowly the water temp rises, I doubt "more cooling" would lower the cpu temp at all. I kinda have overkill for dissipation. Still, at stock settings, it liked to run HOT. I think that thick top plate kinda puts an upper limit on dissipation.

Often lower Mhz/cpu utilization is where instability happens with undervolting - according to another vid. The voltage curve (the one you're offsetting by -20) tells the CPU how much voltage to send to each core at a given Mhz/Ghz speed. At lower speeds, it's already sending a pretty low voltage and -20 makes up a much bigger fraction of that already low voltage. Intel Mobo's have a way of keeping that voltage from drooping to much (really intended for overclocking where a sudden jump in speed can cause a voltage drop). I wonder if there's something similar in AMD land? If it's true that low Mhz are the main source of undervolt offset instability, then you'd be able to use a bigger offset if you could keep those low mhz volts up a bit.

I just tested my 7900 (non-X) on cinebench R20 and it hit 92c at it's highest. This is with PBO and auto OC enabled. Tested with my Arctic Freezer eSport Duo with 2 noctua 3k-rpm industrial fans (110cfm each). When I disabled PBO and auto OC in BIOS and tested again in cinebench R20, my 7900 (non-X) did not go above 44c. Here are the scores - PBO & auto OC on = 10,729. PBO & auto OC off = 7,768. Performance hit = 27.6% With PBO & auto OC on, my noctua cpu fans were running very loudly and at near it's highest rpm. With PBO & auto OC off, my noctua cpu fans were running a lot quieter. I think the Arctic Freezer 34 eSport Duo is a very good cooler and it will be able to handle the 5800X and 7700X even with PBO/OC turned on, but it will be loud. Much better thermals and audio if PBO and auto OC is turned off. The AF34ESD will struggles to cool the 7900 (non-X) if PBO and auto OC are enabled, but will be able to handle the 7900 (non-X) with these two features disabled. I will now run the same tests and compare with my ThermalRight Peerless Assassin 120SE. I have been using it as my main cooler and I am not impressed. It gets out performed by my AF34ESD. Very strange why your videos get so few views, what happened, i used to watch you for 10 years now since gtx 770 reviews. Also have you noticed that on latest bios with latest agesa, there is c state lock of 5.5ghz on 7950x. I have this cpu and b650e pg riptide wifi and on release bios there is no such thing cpu will boost up to 5.7ghz+ on many cores, while with newest it doesn't. What about your combo ?

Strange, I haven't tested my 7950X with the latest BIOS yet. :o I'm assuming, the Boost clocks will go higher with future BIOS versions again. BIOS development for many motherboards is a hit and miss, as far as my experience is concerned. Haha! Things get fixed, but some functionality often is broken until a new update arrives.

@@Nicolas11x12English Skatterbencher did overview of this strange decision of AMD two months ago, and i noticed that its not only Asrock, others who have latest bios now have same lock. PBO doesn't work, it will still boost only up to 5.5ghz all core. Only positive thing from this is that you can increase undervolt even higher, with Release bios i could only do negative 20 while with newest bios around negative 40, because it won't go past 5.5ghz and crash attempting to hit 5.8ghz with undervolt. So sustained loads benefit from it, like cinebench r23, my 7950x hits 5.4ghz all core. However in games it slower. Staying on release bios seems only option for now

While gaming that’s completely normal because games don’t use all 12 cores. PBO limiting is for people that use their PC for rendering and productivity as well - that’s when temperatures reach high levels. If you’re just gaming, you’re good! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it 🙌🏻

Depends of your bios uses mW (milli watts) or the full watts in the settings. I personally have a 7700x and set ppt to 105 watts and it’s been great. You can set it a little lower but get some diminishing returns. I also have a 85 thermal limit but with 105 watts it doesn’t go above 80.

@@nicolasaltamiranofrontalin6523 it depends if your own motherboard uses mW or just W. You will need to see in the settings what it calls for and put in the appropriate values. I'm running a 7950X3D with -30 on the CCD0 vCache and -25 on the CCD1 Frez, plus I add 150Mhz overclock, so the CCD1/Freq can hit 5900Mhz. Funny thing is that it was actually stable on -40/-35, but I pulled it back a bit to the -30/-25 values since it is a hostsvr for SE. You can actually go far more extreme on the per core curve if you use LLC, so the power doesn't dip or spike, aka more stable. Before I was running a 7800X3D at -25, which tested stable at -30. The 7800X3D under stress test was pulling around 85W+-. The 7950x3D stress test pulls around 108W+- On a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120, which was perfect for the 7800X3D, but just ordered a AIO, since I want to eek out another 5% to 10%+- on the 7950X3D. Stress test ATM, 5050Mhz on the CCD0 cores. and 5225Mhz on the CCD1 cores. Temping being the issue, hitting 83C. With proper cooling, high W paste and fans with high CFM/Air Pressure on a AIO, the temps will drop another 10-15C. Goal is to get all the CCD0 to 5250Mhz and CCD1 to hopefully 5700Mhz+-, maybe 5900Mhz. You could get away with air cooling, I just had a bad case airflow and not great CFM/Air pressure fans to push the air fast enough. The Cougar MHP 120 look, good P/C ratio, if people are interested. 82.48 CFM ± 10% / 4.24 mm H2O±10%
