Actually, much better than GNs review of the 7950X. GN did not include the 3950X in their 7950X review benchmarks, which I found quite weird. The type of person who buys a 7950X very likely either had a 5950X, or a 3950X before, because they need flagship multicore performance, and are interested in knowing how much uplift the 7950X brings compared to their current CPU. So not including the 3950X in the 7950X review benchmarks was a bad decision from GN.

@@Tystros the main issue is INTERCONNECT and how that R9 series "access" utliizes and inherently needs to pump voltage to activate dorant cores/ccx/zencores to utilize a cache/pool to in turn access and cache system memory. Its still an INHERENT "design flaw" principle that amd has on the table vs intel as far as gaming or high data throughput/load based computing. WHICH also applies to the potentiation of the X3D "design". Its IMO why the 5800x3d Was at a "tighter" operating range bc....a wider clock speed/range of operation leads to INHERENT latency....as voltages ramp up and down...purely for utlizing "dormant" cores for background processing or ram/cache intercommunication and chipset etc communication. It was also a common aspect among the laptop market...considering ive owned 3750h/asus laptops/tested, and 5900hx....as well as owning/KEEPING a 9750h laptop and 10750h laptops by comparison to the AMD laptops i wound up returning. AMD requires a lot of end user optimization for a TRUE ideal endgame experience. Granted my 5900x is ran stock bc i like its operating capability and temps out of the box since its got a factory "tighter" voltage curve than a hotter 5800x out of the box which needs pbo2 or core voltage optimization to be IDEAL. ESP in itx builds. Either way fact some ppl can get a 3950x for near 350$ makes for a DYNAMITE gaming+workstation at that budget. Gives a lot of ppl ACCESS to "potential" they otherwise never had. I saw this interconnect issue from the 5900hx to the 3950x to the 5900x...from ccx design to zencore etc...its why i wont be getting into amd/x3d until they can "Solve" this concept granted zen3 is pretty good and the current state of intel i presonally dont need an upgrade but to others....thinking of going amd...id consdier an "entry level" cpu or etc if you dont need a massive work/horse of a cpu. IMO amd may offer a solution to this interconnect issue more or less "around the corner" of our potential future....and if that happens IT will be the "one to own". To Ideally build around and would be a system that would hold up for a GOOD chunk of years from a gaming and WORK/Productivity standpoint. AS API get further developed win11 and dx12 ultimate become more mainstream and developers are more orietned with the "potential" the industry is leaning towards as well as aspects like hardware acceleration and async computing....this "NEXT" era of platforms will be GAME changing...as well as usb4 or type c interfaces and their THROUGHPUT. The SCALE of these implementations From developer to end user is going to be massive. The way sandybridge offered HUGE gains to gamers...and DEVS had end users/data that was far more VIABLE for their development cycle than the systems prior.

@@kabosuinu the newer cpus are made to run hotter. If you dont want them to run as hot, you can set target temp in BIOS or do a curve undervolt without loosing a lot of performance. The 12400 is a great CPU and such good value...These new 7000 series Ryzen's whilst more than impressive do run hot and I wonder what sort of performance you lose if running just basic air cooling as all the reviews I have seen were running 360mm AIO's... Hopefully platform costs will reduce when the launch the B series motherboards. And the whole future investment is really a non issue as you will have two generations of motherboards and I tend to drive at least 5 to 6 years before upgrading completely. More importantly CPU's both from AMD and Intel are just so good now that they should last a longer time..

IMO unless youre into content creation/development....i dont place too much emphasis on "upgrades/new tech" unless youre in dire need of an upgrade/or old build is RIP. As far as gaming there is almost minimal to no real world need for a system this "FAST" unless you PURELY prioritize MAXING out AAA games...most ppl that play PVE etc...bc multiplayer is generally a "REALM" where ppl dont even run maxed settings or even at times NATIVE resolution....they generally run a "mix" of what equates to better performance or frag/success viability....which already negates a lot of the necessity for "flagship" components. For most general/genuine gamers. Or ppl that play esporst/freesports titles, or multiplayer online gamers. Conversely If you LARGELY prioritize AAA and PVE titles....youd be better off with a skewed budget towards a 4k capble GPU ideal 12v rail psu...vs a 500$+ cpu...granted the inherent aspects of SYSTEM load in a 4k gaming scenario. It really changes how ppl should/plan/budget their build in this CURRENT "ERA"...bc a 5800x3d and "faster/more expensive GPU" is going to be better than a 700$ cpu and lesser GPU ultimately. And "high refresh gaming" is somewhat of a marketing gimmick esp on IPS panels. So a lot of ppl have been schilled into thinking they need 300 fps on QHD XD. VS the huge VIABILITY of per frame adaptive sync/monitors and how VIABLE this concept is for a "lesser sytem" esp on PVE titles where "latency/frame times" isnt remotely as much of an emphasis vs "multiplayer". With added emphasis of using a controller for some hack n slashers etc...and the inherent latency of that aspect already being on the table. FWIW i have multiple systems and had/sold/tested multiple in the past...my laptop/work setup...is a 4k amoleds OMEN with a 105w 2070s....and you can enable "FAST SYNC" ON THE 60HZ MONITOR and it plays games smoothly/better like BFV on 4k or 1440p at 60hz including frame times....than a "budget" desktop like a 3600 w a 5500xt...per ex. or a 3600 with a desktop 2070. While also doubling as a work system where you can plug to an external and effectively have a 4k amoled as your secondary monitor...not to mention how ideal it is for content/consumption and hack n slashers w a controller.

According to AMD 115C is considered hot, i wonder if this means future generations will see 110c "normal" temperatures, and at that point can we use water boiling to cool the CPU, mega phase change cooling FYI, we currently use water in heat pipes and vapor chambers but it is generally under vacuum to reduce the boiling point. Imagine your cooling loop just runs at ambient pressure, and used an expanssion chamber to get a larger steam volume without needing much more than 5PSI from the boiling water

It may be best to wait for the 7950 X3D. Most games these days are more GPU limited, especially if you are playing at higher resolutions. There's one other big issue - you may also want to go custom loop given the power consumption of the 7950X. The 7950X isn't really geared for gaming, especially if you are playing at 4k, as much as it is for multithreaded workloads that can take advantage of the extra cores.

Your percentages listed were off from time to time. In Cinebench going from the 5950X to the 7950X is about a 50% uplift and you said 25%. That's a huge difference. Start with the 5950X and take the difference between it and the 7950X. This is the increase over the 5950X. The difference is the uplift over the 5950X. In fact with your numbers (different reviewers, different numbers), the uplift is almost 50%. . Wording is EVERYTHING when giving percentages. So, best to figure out how you're going to word percentages and stick with that wording every time so the calculation you use is correct for the wording you use. For instance 50% faster than the 5950X is 50% of the speed of the 5950X added to the performance of the 5950X. 100% uplift = 2X the speed of the 5950X. In Cinebench that would be a score of 51780. It's pretty obvious that 38,467 is almost half way between 25,890 and 51,780, so the 7590X with the numbers you got is about 50% faster than the 5950X. This is in line with what's been shown, where the variation is around 42 or 43% up to almost 50% like what you showed.

frankly im not SEROIUSLY considering "uppgrading" until win11, dx12u, vulkan, unreal6...other aspects like hardware acceleration etc become Even MORE mainstream...the FUTURE systems built around that VIABILITY will clearly be more "optimal" than trying to run a 7950x or 7900x3d etc... Id rather spend "then" on intel/amd...and a usb4 etc board. Not to mention what the POTENTIAL laptop market will be capable of by then as far as how those "laptops" down the road will handle CURRENT titles of "today" IJS. Once i hear good news on the developer end and API development progress...then ill know it will be time to start "researching" a new build/platform. Ultimately anyone in DIRE need of a "modern system" are stuck with their best/viable options as of "TODAY" though i dont shy from suggesting ppl to try to "AIM" for an on deal 8c laptop w ddr5, or an older gen/budget "power rig" vs something FLAGSIHP/new RN...unless their job/bottomline/take home pay is DEPENDENT on their system. Even as potential content creators....its better to place more emphasis/priorilty on GENUINELY making better content/your approach/process incremental improvements on your personal end...vs placing priority/expectations on your system/tech.

Still rocking the 3950X. Was thinking about the 5950X but looks like the 7950X smokes it. However I do not like the extra wattage and heat. My PC is running 24x7 - doesn't Intel have more efficiency at idle speeds? Or should I get the 5950X?
@blkspade23
@blkspade23 Жыл бұрын
The wattage is the heat. It's a matter of whether or not you actually need 16 cores. The 5950X isn't actually meaningfully faster than the 3950X in all core workloads at stock. You can get the MT perf up with PBO for more watts. It's specifically more improved at single thread and gaming, which isn't the target use for it in the first place. That is load power consumption, but the differences of idle power would barely be meaningful. Needing 16 cores is either to have it under load regularly, or using the density for virtualization. The 12900K will still occasionally lose to the 5950X in MT (while using more power), and the e-cores are crap for virtualization. The 7950X pulls roughly the same wattage under load as the 12900K, but is 40% faster. For what the 5950X costs now it probably is some what of a sensible upgrade if you really just want more ST perf. If you need the cores for real work and would begin to consider switching to Intel then AM5 makes even more sense. If you don't need the cores and want better gaming performance the 5800X3D is the cheapest best solution since you're already on AM4.

The efficiency is ludicrous for the performance. Much much more efficient than the Intel 12000 series of processors. From what I have seen, 65W ECO mode provides about -10% of performance for much lower power. AMD is just pushing the chips to the edge it seems, partly due to the excellent clocks TSMC 4N process is achieving. Really impressive stuff.

Bad thing is I do not utilize 5950x hardly at all a little warzone now and then but mostly Quake 2 on a neo g9. I would like to see some aida 64 of the 7950x read write copy and latency of the 7950x and 7700x, as on my 5950x latency best I can get 52ms also. I would like to see some tests of older games like quake 2 where there is a NVidia cap of 1000fps regardless and why! also look forward to see what 13th gen offers.

In the first slide, in the first minute, in the table comparing the 3 CPUs, unless I'm VERY mistaken, R9 5950X was not $550, but $800. Also, from what I know, the 4 initial Zen 3 CPUs were launched in Octomber/November 2020, not May. Wikipedia confirms it. Edit: ok, the pricing was cleared shortly after, it's the current pricing, not the release pricing.

The high temps thing just scares me off of going all in on a 7000 series chip right now. I'm almost doubling back to getting a 5000 series and a better GPU. currently on a 3000 series right now. The startup costs to upgrade for even the 7600 just doesn't seem worth it. You can get a good a good B550 board and 5700x for much cheaper. or spending an extra 150 and go 5800x3d for max gaming performance. The gaming uptick for the 7000 is lacking. yeah the overall boost in system apps is huge. But it doesn't give that much boost to overall gaming. at this point i'm thinking getting a 5000 on the cheap, and waiting for B650 boards and Vcache 7000 chips later on.

As someone who plays on a 3950X (bought it back then because I used to do a lot of video rendering) at 4k resolution, this was quite insightful. However, I think removing CS:GO from the graphs leaves the 7950X even less of an upgrade at 4k. Generally spoken, at high settings, we are already aiming at being GPU-bound in general. I think only games where computing is more part of the game like Civilization VI, computing power really matters even at 4k. So, overall, when playing at 4k you could still skip this iteration of Zen all around until GPUs are no longer setting the upper bound, and that may take a while.

@@brunoalmeida5293 Hello Bro. RTX3090, the 3950x was holding my 3090 back a little at 1440p with a slight CPU bottleneck but games were playable but I wouldn't pair it with a 1080p monitor because the bottleneck would be quite apparent. 6800XT would be a good pairing with the 3950x or an RTX4070 if you're willing to spend the money but I would recommend a 6800 since depending on region would be great price to performance. Even a 6700XT or 6700 would be a great choice for the money. I still use my 3950x for Virtual Machines and for HTPC duties paired with an RTX3070 on a 4k TV, the CPU bottleneck is reduced significantly at 4k. 3950x is still a good processor and decently priced.

SMART ngl the ram pricing/board pricing is even IDEAL to someone that sourced their 3950x used. If gaming isnt a major PRIOIRITY or running a would be 500$+ gpu...theres not to much of a reason/emphasis on upgrading cpu/board platforms. Just paying the Supply/demand tax to be a beta tester IMO. For the "future products" where a smaller % actually RELIES/needs these upgrades in reality. Ppl can change their perspective and place more emphasis on PERSONAL skills....and skill application as a content creator/development. You can always figure out how to use what you got in a better way or improve your process/work in a more optimal manner that IMO is an invaluable skill regardless of how powerful your system is...and i think thats an important part of being and end-user vs an "early adopter"
