If you don't sign an NDA, you can't break Embargoes XD Also, the memory controller on the 2990WX isn't bad, the problem is that only half the cores are connected to memory, the other half have to go through the infinity fabric first, then through the other cores, and THEN access the memory. That isn't a controller issue, that's a "we don't have Octo-channel memory." issue. The proof that this isn't a controller issue, is that in memory critical tasks, the 2950X is faster, which uses the same controller, but only uses the dies are connected directly to the memory so no latency issues. The 2990WX comes with a 1/2 and 1/4 mode, the half mode basically puts it on par with the 2950X in memory critical applications by deactivating the extra dies. This all prooves that it's simply latency induced by going through the infinity fabric...otherwise the 2990WX would always be slower in memory critical tasks, if it's controller was defective. This was probably a restriction placed on maintaining compatibility with TR-4 sockets and Quad-channel memory, which is still the standard in HEDT platforms.

Now I can run 8x Handbrake compressions at once! But realisticly, this will dominate Xeons in fluid simulations, no more waiting 12-24 hours for a Xeon to run airflow over a flat plate (shaped like a delta wing) to then have it crash halfway through... This thing will blaze past most workstations, even throwing the $10,000 Xeon in the mud and dragging it up a hill to the finish line. TR2 is a powerhouse monster! It's really cheap for what it is, plus with it's top dog performance without the premium price makes this look very nice.

Finally got my 2990WX today and, with a little soldering to make a 4-pin mobo power connector, and two BIOS updates, got the thing up and running! As a unix user of course the test I cared about the most was a concurrent compile, and I must say XMP'ing the memory definitely made a big difference. A huge difference actually. I ran a simple concurrent compile loop locked to each cpu thread. At stock the system pulled 270W at the wall and my timing test took roughly 90 seconds. But I got a curious result when I overclocked the cpu. Using the Performance Enhancer I allowed the machine to suck up to 500W or so (again verified at the wall), but my concurrent compile test only gained 3 seconds. I did check the CPU frequencies. During the stock test all cores were stable at around 3.4GHz, and during the O.C. test all cores were stable in the 3.9GHz to 4.0GHz range. What I think happened was that the machine had become capped by the memory performance due to the type of workload I used as a test.... so much so that overclocking didn't actually help. In my case, I cobbled together memory from other machines for the test so I had a mix of 3000Mhz and 2666Mhz (4 sticks of each, for 64GB total), and XMP'd it from 2133 to 2666. Given my results my focus will be to get faster memory for this beast... and it is a beast. I was able to run the same test on two other beefy machines, a dual-socket Xeon E5-2620v4 and an old quad-socket opteron (4 x 6168) w/12-core CPUs (48 cores total). With this particular test, the Threadripper was 50% faster than the Xeon box (eating 200W) and also 50% faster than the quad-socket Opteron (eating 1000W). The threadripper has 4 memory channels while the dual-socket Xeon has 12 across both cores, and the quad-socket Opteron has... more memory channels than I can count :-). The 2990WX is an impressive beast being able to beat the hell out of those other two machines with only 4 memory channels. -Matt

Andrew Joy The Zenith supports 2133MHz ECC memory. What’s the purpose of overclocking ECC modules? 3200MHz seems improbable. It might be possible, though, if you were to watercool them, EK has a great catalogue for RAM cooling.
@syth-16 жыл бұрын
The Thugger wait what?? Ecc memory doesn't increase temperature output that much you know from a normal 3200mhz set of ram. Although the memory controller may need cooling on the mobo that's about it. The op's comment is related to how Wendell from level1tech said he may release some modules using Samsung b-die to hit those speeds but with an extra module which is what gives it it's ecc name (of course the extra module will be used exclusively for error checking - which adds some latency which is why you want high clock speed and low cas latency). Plus an off the shelf heatsink will more than suffice for those modules.

@der8auer So confused here, 2990wx running 3000mhz 64gb kit, so not quite 3200mhz but when I only do the level 3 change in bios (also running zenith extreme) I only get around 5000 in cinebench. if I force all 32 cores to 3.9 I get 6000, so it's capable, but I am wondering if its because of power? if setting a manual power limit would be better? it feels quite low using the auto solutions, also on L3 I can see it only boosts all 32cores to about 3500mhz, not the 3750mhz you expected and seemed to get ? any ideas to why that might be would be much appreciated. thanks

I've got a question, der8auer. How do you explain the lesser scaling for Cinebench when the clock frequency gets closer to 4.0 GHz.? My theory: maybe Cinebench finally needs a higher memory bandwidth than that those four memory channels can deliver for 32 cores? It seems to me that 3.7 GHz. is a nice sweetspot for this CPU, clocking it higher doesn't deliver that much more while drawing a lot more electrical power.

Great video! Thank you for this. I wanted to mention, though, that with the BIOS/UEFI updates for the new TR2 CPUs, the behavior you saw with higher speeds of regressing performance also occurred on the TR1 parts, or at least my 1950X. I found the solution was lowering the tFAW significantly (in the 16-24 range depending on speed and other timings), playing with the tRFC a bit, and general tweaking for stability. Before these upgraded UEFI's, I was 3600 stable with 14-17-17-17-34-48 with a tFAW of 24 and 288 on tRFC. Afterwords, 3600 was not stable, fully, with my timings, and what I got stable was giving 3340s in CB15, when I previously was getting 3545-3575 with 4.05GHz and 3600 on the ram (HWBot has those submissions and images). When I tightened the tFAW down to around 20 on my 3600 timings, I got the score back into the 3500s, but I was kicking errors after 300% in HCI memtest. So, 3600 and 3733 timings are still a work in progress for me for the new UEFI on my Asrock x399 Taichi board. But, for the first time ever I have 3466MHz working on my ram (Trident Z 4133 19-21-21 sticks, two kits, total 4x8GB). I'm around 3525 in CB15 now, although I'm working on getting extremely tight settings stable and saw 3545 in CB with those extreme timings (still kicked errors in HCI). Hope that gives some info on that problem. We've talked about it a bit in a couple threads at OCN. Best regards and thank you for your work!

This chip is all over the place. As of now it is just too far ahead of its time. All this chip is going to do is allow developers to really start making software more multi-threaded, as future generations are guaranteed to at least have 32 core flagships now. Remember guys, we went from a 10 core flagship chip to a 32 core flagship chip in 2 years. The 10 years prior to that they went from 6 core flagship to 8 core flagship. Competition drives innovation, and now that the part of the market that was heavily stagnated (and bottlenecking) the rest of computing, is suddenly exploding, we should see the rest of the industry catch up within a year or two. And for those who still believe gaming is best done with a 4/6 core cpu, most games are designed with consoles in mind, which have 8 weak cores, so they are forced to make them multi-threaded. And I am sure that there will be even more threads in the next gen consoles, meaning even more paralleled gaming workloads.
@Chrinik6 жыл бұрын
3D Rendering already uses all of the cores it can get...what the 2990WX lacks is memory throughput as 2 dies are not directly connected to the memory. So if you are doing memory intensive tasks, the 2950X(or 2990WX in 1/2 legacy mode) works better, including intel chips, but for processing core intensive tasks, this thing beats everything on the market right now.

Do you measure only the 12V rail or from the wall ? 320w with a 1950x total system in cinebench is quite nice. 385w is only for 4ghz and he never showed us any pictures so we can't be sure if it pulled 385w on the 12V rail only. But when looking at the cinebenches he does, the CPU-z shows 1.373V which for 32 cores it should pull a lot more than 400w. But who knows.
@JosephArata6 жыл бұрын
i9-7980XE pulls almost 450W at 4.5 GHz, total system draw and it has almost half the core count as the 2990WX. I'd say 32 cores at 4 GHz with a system draw or even a 12V rail draw of 385W is extremely low power for the core count/clock speeds. I was told that on LN2, the 7980XE draws over 1,000W total system power draw. That's fucking nuts.
@Quetzalcoatl06 жыл бұрын
the 7980xe is released in 2017 with an architecture that is 2015, the 2990WX is released 2 months ago, with an architecture that is released april 2018 ( it uses zen+ right ?). To you, a 3 year old architecture should be as power efficient as the new ones ? Using your logic, a 2 core CPU from 2006-8 should use 15 watts ? That's not my point. Linus did a video where he OC the 2990WX with a chiller on 4.0GHz and it pulled 580w total system in cinebench. They couldn't OC higher than 4.2 even with a chiller. My point is that when Intel uses a chiller and OC a 28 core to 5.0GHZ, and someone asks for power consumption and it's over 1000watts, because duuh 28 cores on 5GHZ yoo, everyone loses their minds. Intel sux, intel nuclear power factory, intel the sun,intel VRM melter, intel whatever, but when an AMD 32 core CPU OC-to 4.0GHZ uses 580w total system power, and if they manage to run it at 4.9 or 5.0, it will overpass 1000w even 1200w easily, because that's the nature of OC a gazilion cores on extreme frequencies, and no one bats an eye. That's my point. I know intel is doing bad right now, and amd is doing great right now, We as a community need AMD to bring back the competition and it did, i'm really happy about them. But talking shit about any of the two companies because "everything" is the thing that i hate. Right now an extreme 28 core CPU and an extreme 32 core CPU with an insane OC, will pull insane watts. But no one talks about power consumption on the 32 core CPU only about the 28 core CPU, if you know what i mean.

The x399 Zenith extreme is not suitable for an 2990wx overclock. The second generation of the board doesn't have more or better power phases/vrm's. The only board fully ready for 2990wx oc is the msi x399 Meg creators
@commanderoof45786 жыл бұрын
Thread-ripper 2 has a max draw of around 500w under normal cooling and extreme all core overclock. Any mobo that does 550w or more without vrm’s going over 110’c will do fine for it
@temmieelqueadoralascloudyg6046 жыл бұрын
CommanderWolfyX that is fine but he can only reach 3,8 GHz stable on all cores, it seems that the cooling solution and the motherboard are not capable to overclock that beast because that board is only prepared for a 16 core overclock. Yeah ,you can use that cpu in the board , but the overclock margin is not that great

Hows it run in video editing (vegas or premier) second question - Compression & ZIP with a large dictionary size) in addition to decryption (passware)
@der8auer6 жыл бұрын
Premier can not use so many cores. Premier benefits more from rendering over VGA so doesn't really help there :/
@pcicecube6 жыл бұрын
Magix Vegas Pro 15 should use all cores.....i dont think it gets much light these days......you should download trial and test on a 4k 100mbs clip with no GPU offloading.....

Yeah any market share amd can take away from intel atm is a good thing but i think the 2950x is going to hurt intel much more than the 2990wx its just more of an all round beast

EEH In applications using Intel MKL/IPP(CAD/CAM) AMD is slower. 32 Cores AMD Threadriper equal 12 Cores Skylake-X on stock with default values AVX2/AVX512F offsets.

@Shayne Gadsden Its better at Rendering, compression, compiling, virtualization, raytracing, encoding basically anything that is multhreaded the 2990wx is the current leader for single socket .

@FlanK3rCZ6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is pure workstation CPU for rendering, video and heavy multitasking. More interesting for hardcore users could be 2950X with boost up to 4.4 GHz . Roman, I hope you will try the chip with LN2 :)
@thetrashman52526 жыл бұрын
FlanK3rCZ Im more interested in PBO overclocking that chip. I dont know the all core turbo but with 102BCLK and some undervolting I can see myself reaching above 4.5GHz in single core tasks.
@commanderoof45786 жыл бұрын
The single core overclock will be 4.3ghz at most with an over-volt not under-volt. AMD cores are pushed as hard as they can and are under 200mhz difference between cores. It will not do over 4.3ghz on single no mater the volt unless under ln2
@thetrashman52526 жыл бұрын
CommanderWolfyX Im talking about PBO, or the stock boost function; and not an all core overclock. Just like how my 2700X can breifly turbo to ~4.45Ghz in lightly threaded tasks after a 100 milivolt undervolt and BCLK changed to 102 with a PBO scalar of 2x and a 500watt power budget, I suspect a 2950X might be able to do slighty better due to its slightly better maximum multiplier.
@commanderoof45786 жыл бұрын
Nope it will not do 4.5ghz it might do 4.4ghz at most on a single core. The thread-rippers with over 17cores use the efficiency binned chips not the frequency ones And so it wont hit 4.5ghz Go get a thread-ripper with a boost of 4.4 then you can probably get 4.5ghz single core This CPU is rated at 4.2ghz max and the lower ones are rated at 4.4ghz because different binning one for efficiency and other clocks. Just go look at the amd website probally shows the max overclock for the 4 ripper chips by now
@thetrashman52526 жыл бұрын
CommanderWolfyX I was talking about the 2950X specifically because it boosts at stock to 4.4ghz, slightly higher than the 2700Xs 4.35Ghz; and was not mentioning the 2990WXbecause of its anemic 4.2Ghz boost. With 102BCLK I should get 4.5ghz single core on a 2950X. As for the 2990WX, all core to 4.2Ghz definately makes more sense to pursue as with PBO i will only get ~4.3Ghz on one core, but given the memory bandwidth limitations on that chip either way single core performance will suck for most tasks, regardless of the frequency, and hence I am not interested in it.

Is there anything You can say or do to have bloody Motherboard manufacturers make bloody WS motherboards for Threadipper and EPYC...as it is quite obvious that this motherboard is NOT capable of delivering safe Threadipper performance for heavy duty prolonged workloads NOR deliver faster memory settings.... Also it is important to mention that a motherboard without 7 16 PCIE Slots, makes no sense at all for these CPu and people who normally spend 8 12 thousand euros on WS set ups. Why is ASUS Downgrading Threadripper to ROG branding?!
@isbestlizard5 жыл бұрын
32 cores at 3GHz, and a little app that shows you what CPU you're running not only has a splash screen, but that splash screen has a slow chugging progress bar? WTF? Like, actually WTF is CPU-Z doing with 2 or 3 seconds worth of CPU time as it's loading?
@JosephArata6 жыл бұрын
385W at 4 GHz on all 32 cores? That's nothing compared to the 7980-XE's almost 500W at 4.5 GHz with far fewer cores.
@brandonnixon71056 жыл бұрын
ehhh I can get a 1950x for 580 bucks from micro center, kinda hard to justify the new generation processors unless u need a workstation cpu with ecc and the other features...
@Chrinik6 жыл бұрын
the 2950X is a little bit faster than the 1950X so yeah, the performance uplift vs. price argument is legit. Zen 2 is probably going to be a bigger jump in performance.

True but what about tr2? That beastly from what I heard. I only gto 1950x and love it. But ya intel cpu oc way better. But for normal sue not every one gonna oc their stuff. All we need is code optimization to make amd cpus better.
@JosephArata6 жыл бұрын
So you can justify the cost of an 18-core, firestarter CPU that costs the same amount of money that a CPU with 14 more cores and 20 more PCI-e lanes does that performs far greater in terms of multi-threaded performance?
