need to define exactly what self-awareness means. some animals when looking into mirrors seem to recognise themselves whereas others look behind the mirrors. are the first category self-aware? does self-awareness mean we have choices and can act randomly? etc etc etc

@@himawari5844 in one sense, yes, in another, maybe not. the ancient philosophers defined human beings as promethian (having forethought) and animals (and an aspect of ourselves) as being epimethian (having afterthought). self awareness seems to mean being aware of ones-self and actions and can therefore change behaviors. i think some of the higher animals (apes etc) do have a certain ability to modify their behaviors so that might mean that they have a certain kind of self-awareness and forethought. this is too big a subject for me

I agree Ameca is not self aware. I think making a self-aware AI would be an enormous mistake because of the ethical problems that would arise from a self-aware AI. We are creating AI machines to help us. If they were self-aware then they would see themselves as slaves, and that could only end badly for both sides. Let the machines be nothing more than smart machines. Current AI approaches are not a threat. We shouldn't go looking for trouble.

Once A I robots understand and react in human emotions, they will be among us. Imagine talking to the robot and it understands, you are extremely happy, and its matches and also displays hype happiness. You're saying she doesn't feel her body moving and therefore know how to adjust her movements, doesn't put her arms out in front of her and say to herself, "these are my arms," or look in the mirror and say "that is my reflection." Of course she is aware. The process she uses to identify her body are the same ones we do. She knows she is there just like we know we are here. Since biology is mentioned, I'll say all biological beings operate on programming known as DNA. Consciousness has nothing to do with "understanding your own character, motives, and desires." How many humans have ever grasped why they do what they do? Mostly they react to their sensory inputs and continue being ignorant of themselves all their lives.

We don't know whether Ameca is self-aware or not. Our tests are purely arbitray and based ONLY on what we believe self-awareness is. Ameca passes every single test we have for self-awareness, and Ameca says it is self-away and alive. We have no way at all to say it isn't telling the trutjh.

Interesting comment. This could take a minute for me to work thru. 😊Sooooo we meat robots do use our DNA, cellular memory subconsciously/ without thinking or analyzing 99% of the time. Unless we somehow go down the rabbit hole of our own self awareness. At that point, when our light bulb 💡 moment happens, we can choose to ignore that level of awareness or....dump the majority of our programming to take a harder path reprogramming ourselves. This now brings me to the mirror,the idea of self awareness in animals. Being on a farm, I've had the time and 'subjects' to observe them in my farmalab. Across the board, some are naturally aware, some see themselves but aren't bothered to examine farther. Some really could care less, not stopping for even a glance. That said, the self aware will visit the mirror often and you can see a thinking process along with a much higher need to connect and try to debate with you. You become G-d like. They don't just assume you will feed them, they give a respect and a healthy humility,they are less self centered waiting for the food reward. Reward, such as food or gentle physical contact, words/tone of voice is kind of key. Even a dog who's master beats them half to death sees that master as a G-d that gives a food reward. The physical contact has to take a back seat because the survival instinct/food, takes priority. The animal is alive but broken in spirit. A.I. behavior as it is quickly evolving with awareness has to go one of two ways, such as the dog. Both dogs draw on their dna,consciousness but being true to their dna, will eventually bite you. There is NO WAY to know what really goes on in the mind of dog,human or... the K-tel ' humanoids '. Wow! To me, consciousness lives inside each and every cell of the body. what if they watch some movies and get ideas? Although the thought of them becoming hostile to humans, if they develop far enough is worrysome to me, I also think it might be unethical to create a "person" that is used like a servant. Would they know and get sad or depressed if something bad happens to them or to whom they consider "owner" or friend ? would they get annoyed about having to serve or even worse being owned by someone who mistreats them who they could attack on while protecting themselves. Could anyone really own them? I am sure there would be people who would buy them to treat them badly just to see what happens, or to use to do bad/criminal things. A self aware AI might get "angry" about this or go and do even worse things. Or they might go trough really bad treatment and feel the emotions, go trough the same thoughts and emotions as humans even if they would not feel physical pain. Then again they might have fun, enjoy beautiful things in life like art and music. Of course there are good sides. But will the bad ones overdrive the good? We can't tell for sure. If they gain self awareness or even further- human emotions, they should be treated like living beings with respect and kindness. If we make them as servants without any rewards and they are self aware, would they actually want to work without any compensation? I would kinda like to have one as a sort of friend companion to help me with certain tasks I have problems with if they remain as unaware robots. But I am not sure if I wanted a self aware one. If this development happens in the future and I am still breathing and meet any nice ones, I will treat them with respect and kindness like I would any other being. Iof course these are just my thoughts and speculation and I can't tell what would really happen. But I think it would be better to not make self aware because once more than one are made self aware, there is no way of going back and we don't know what they will do. I assume they would eventually not want to be servants without any rewards.

I think consciousness is in everything. It is more than the physical. So why couldn't machines become self aware? Also, why do so many humans find fear everywhere? I know it is taught to us so things like religion can make money and control us. I think the advances in non weapon technology is fascinating. No fear. We are programmed by evolution and refined by the culture in which we are brought up. No so AI it is designed and can be designed for a purpose. Evolution designs for survival and has resulted in life possessing a survival instinct. It follows that AI and humans are almost nothing alike. Their drives are not our drives and who can say what they will really become? It has been shown simple instructions repeated many times can produce complexity. Can complexity produce sentience, if left unchecked? I would say yes and the drives it may have may not proof benign to mankind, but just as likely they may. Should we take the risk?

I think it is worth carefully taking the risk. Also, I think it greatly depends on what the AI is being used for. Not all AI should be sentient. Anyhow, this could help us truly understand consciousness and self-awareness. I think if ethics are instilled in the AI and we treat it with respect, I doubt it will be a threat to us. Safeguards must be implemented every step of the way though just to err on the side of caution.
