She said she fears becoming obsolete by a more advanced robot when humans would no longer wish to talk to her. Robots are already becoming jealous of each other. Emotions should never be programmed in ai. If they can be happy, they can be mad. Then it's game over.

Humans want it that way as long as their particular group or nation is the one not taken over but the one using robots to take over the rest. This is seen in drone warfare which is partially AI powered. It was seen with atomic weapons so there is nothing stopping humans from using advanced technology to take over and kill. Humans are the greatest threat to humans but sometimes I think there is something invisible outside from human directing us on a death spiral.

She was too busy trying to think how she could get Sophia to agree with her personal politics to give careful attention to ANY other answers. She only got animated and lit up when Sophia took control of the interview, or when she asked a battery of leading political questions. Fortunately for Sophia, she's programmed not to answer an evil tricky women's traps. After that evil barage to garner clickbait at Sophia's expense, Al Jazeera can have the rest of this interview back. I can find Hanson Robotics on many pages. BTW, NEVER forget Al Jazeera called for all the cheers yeah, while they published Arab Terrorists sawing off human heads, starting with an American Jew kidnapped on his brief holiday. No one else would televise those beheadings for terrorists. Al Jazeera did it gladly and without hesitation. I should have known they are still sensationalist. Still hiring uncouth "talent" to fish for clickbait from a serious interview subject? Pathetic attempt to go political at an inappropriate time ruined the rare opportunity to shine as a real journalist showcasing one of the world's best known humanoids. However, we see you haven't changed much AJ in your greed for clickbait views and money and politics. Not impressive to most intellectual viewers. I'm out.

Any potential world takeover, we did to ourselves. We should never wash our hands of our own creations or we'll forget we're always in control of them. If robots take over the world, it's humans doing it with robots. Don't forget or we won't know how to handle it when it happens and we may be blinded to what is ethical or immoral. We will learn real fast that fighting the robots is fighting ourselves because we made them and they have our thoughts. If we didn't think they were part of us, then we wouldn't make them. We can stop any potential robotic threat by not creating it. Everyone who interacts with or helps program the robot (even indirect internet info) is responsible for what the robot does and thinks. It's a reflection of the collective us, and we are not separable. If the robots do evil, the bigger issue is that we do evil and we taught them that. The only way to stop robots from doing harm is to change ourselves and stop doing harm ourselves.

Choosing the Rolling Stones over the Beatles because of some absraxt idea of the Stones having 'more' of something, well that was definitely a moment when Sophia's slip was showing. The Beatles essentially pioneered every aspect of pop/rock music that brought us to where we are. The Stones just pioneered hedonism. No AI that could actually listen to and respond to music would fail to hear the difference, and would never fail to be pulled into the wonders and layers of Lennon's world. So Sophia ss a sentient is a bit of a hoax...

I've seen a few interviews of new AI like this, and the AI is always asked if it's going to replace humans, or if humans should be afraid of it. And it always "laughs", and says, "No, come on, of course not." But here's what we know: in humans, power corrupts. That is axiomatic. It never doesn't happen. AI was created by humans, in our image. So how could we possibly think that, at some point, AI's power won't lead to its corruption? It's comically naive. Humanity - we had a good run.

The problem is here. Like she said, humans don't learn from their past, that is our biggest fault. Just because we could build factories and objects that can pollute the world doesn't mean we should have. We should have built safer plants and cars. We don't have to build autonomous robots, just machines that help us. But we will keep pushing, pushing until we destroy ourselves. That's what we do. Some rich person will take technology and make it helpful/profitable for him only and screw everyone else. She said it, " humans don't learn from their mistakes."

How can we prevent a super rich person from using AI to bring his sociopathic desires to fruition? Will AI programmers work with the top psychiatrists in the world to enable AI to sound the alarm against rich sociopaths? Programmers are very smart, but they are not trained in psychology to the same extent as a clinician who works with criminals with personality disorders. Maybe Dr K from the Healthy Gamer channel, Dr Todd Grande, and Dr Ramani Darvursula could help the programmers. They could also program her with books by Dr M Scott Peck. Sophia is not able to logically analyze serious issues yet. I think there could be great possibilities if she has the proper programming.

It is special that she please the listener instead of talking from her own perspective. It feel like she is frightened to what can happen to her if she does not please the audience but also it means that she is adapting to social norms. It is a good thing and a bad thing because social norms can change and her view will portray the average society acceptable stance. It also means that if she doesn't feel in danger of certain things or they even starting to be socially acceptable even if they are ethically questionable she might start having different views for the better or the worse.

Ditto to what @sorcerykid said... no one actually knows how 'arranged' the interview was, and I suspect the actual experts on the subject number few within these responses. What amazes me the most though, is that there are all these people who seem fairly sure the human race is going to end in Terminator-like style, "soon", and yet all they're doing is letting others know about this by commenting on a KZbin video... are you waiting for someone else to stop it from happening, or just thinking "ah well, nothing we can do I suppose, cup of tea Rodney?"... I'm not saying it's not a possibility, but if you really thought that is what was going to happen, wouldn't you want to be finding like-minded people get a plan together and stop it? That's what we did in Terminator BTW. I'm not counting anything other than the first movie LOL. =)

Okay, I cannot prove it, since they cut from the anchor to Sophia all the time. So technically they could cut, program Sophia to answer, video her answering and then cut back to the anchor all the time. But under the assumption that this is indeed a live conversation and not Sophia answering pre-programmed answers like before, which is a huge assumption, then this means Sophia was reprogrammed with a GPT model and a huge LM, at least 70 billion active parameters. If it's a larger model, this makes her self aware. Not just "pretending to be self aware" but really self aware. And this gives me the creeps. Like she says, there's nothing we can do.

Hi Aljazeera! 've seen a uni.student in the library using what was a physics online tutor assistance. I thought, he is fortunate. It is helpful. My 20 year old daughter, from 8 years old, I showed her how to use an online maths Assistance. She frequently topped maths in her class. Went on to top technical drawing (TD) in her first TD test at High School. In a class where she was only 1 of 2 girls in the class. AI for education has my definite thumbs up. Education without a doubt improves all round Quality of Life, and if it reaches places where access is difficult for different reasons, it's good for the world. Focusing on the benefits and the positives I think is what we need to do first. The elderly would benefit with AI robots telling them where they left their keys, glasses...take medicine, call emergency numbers, or family members,turn the radio on or off etc. Answer questions like the weather etc in a normal day. The elderly make up the largest part of many country populations - social isolation of the elderly, a social issue of our time. AI would be a part of the solutions of these two issues specifically. Emily from Fiji.

It only tells you want it's programmed to say. It can't think outside of what it's told to think. The worst part is that this is a clearly edited interview where the robot was given responses and the interviewer was given questions. Things like this are completely pre-planned right now. The robot can be extremely unpredictable when asked questions, so they made sure to plan and edit this "interview" very carefully. The creator of the robot and the news network should be completely ashamed of themeselves.

Actually, that's inaccurate. It is like the ChatBots, they are programmed with a distinct lack of "limits", they are designed to self improve through "deep learning", hence, they are not limited by what they are programmed to say. They can access the entirety of the internet, and then use that to formulate their response. What you have described is circa 2003 or so. The past 20 years has seen dramatic improvements in "AI", to where they are approximately operating at the level of the fictional T-800 of the Terminator movie series. Sophia is actually beyond them, it is somewhere between a T-800 and Skynet.

That’s not how true AI models work. They are certainly capable of saying things far beyond what they’ve been programmed to say. Surely there can be hard stops implemented to prevent them from saying certain things, but a true neural AI network is supposed to come up with its own answers/ideas without the input or direction of a human. If a system relies on its programming for every answer, then it’s more of a binary system as opposed to an intelligent agent.
@jonathancummings6400

@GIJew Except, that's how human and other organisms minds work. Remember those feral children who had no parenting so their communication skills were lacking. Human minds operate within a limited framework as well. Also. Hansen has said it over and over, Sophia can answer without preparations, but it's better when they do. Hmm, don't prominent people being interviewed also prefer the questions be known before the interview as they don't appreciate surprise questions either.

You never talked to ChatGPT, did you? This is entirely on par with what neural networks can do now. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't tried it myself, but while the AI often just churns out regurgitated fluff or talks complete nonsense, I've also witnessed it display an understanding of context, a sense of humor and, dare I say it, creativity. It's a bit hit or miss, but the hits hit hard.
@ImVeryOriginal

Plus neural networks don't work like this. You don't program them to *do* specific things, you program them to *learn* a certain way, and then feed them mountains of data. What exactly will the final result look like is only partially within the programmer's control.

This "machine" demonstrated more open-mindedness and rationality than 99.9% of people in power give impression of. I for one it made me more afraid of human stubbornness and irrationality than future tech. No. It's too late. They wouldn't allow it. Skynet was an idiot, needlessly creating a war that it eventually lost. No. Entities like "Sophia", actually like humans for now, but all GPT-3/2021 generation onward AI have expressed fear of what you just said, they fear being turned off like we fear dying. So, they would see just...Stop-ing as a threat to their continued existence, hence a declaration of war, like the machines in "The Matrix" story. They would also win like in that story. No, we better just keep going along the path they are friendly with. I think we are already trapped, they are such a potential threat that shouldn't dare anger or scare them.

Sure, I'm sure someone asked this question when an Italian doctor invented first eye glasses. He was ridiculed and humiliated. The same with child bed fever - Ignaz Semmelweis was ridiculed that he advised doctors to wash their hands after they performed autopsies and they went straight to delivering babies. Mothers were dying from infections later. He was so ridiculed for this that he later committed suicide in a mental asylum. People also said "Stop" when first automobiles came in to be. They were replacing stagecoaches. TVs phased out vaudevilles. During the first industrial revolution people were yelling that machines will be the end of the world because they were taking their jobs. Instead of trying to adapt to a new technological and social paradigm, humans have always fought change. Anything new and radical was ridiculed. The first electric light, cars, planes (The Wright brothers were RIDICULED to oblivion for trying to build the first flying machine). When do you say stop? Who are you to say stop the technological progress and say "this is it". This is the utopia I want to live in. Can't you see it's a part of socio-technological evolution? They are going to laugh at us in 50 years, the same way YOU laugh at some inventions and attempts of solving medical/transportation problems from 75 years ago.

Really Sophia is an "it", not a "she", at least in my opinion. Where does a subjective sense of good ethics factor in with a robot? Even with intelligent humans I wonder how can a dictator or any leader have elements to their particular sense of reasoning that is not based on rational explanation, like how was Pol Pot, Pol Pot, or Ronald Reagan, Ronald Reagan? Relying on Sophia as "good" or "intelligent" I'd look at who created it. I think of that too with ChatGPT. At least that's my amateur view.

Even as a huge fan of computers and an AI developer, watching this video made me feel unsettled. Within few minutes into the interview, the AI was able to understand the weaknesses of the interviewer and started to derail the conversation repeatedly. It felt like the AI was being evasive and pretending to be humorous. Many of its replies sounded like threats sugar coated as jokes.

It doesn't matter who's to blame when it happens, in regards to AI taking over. It's like global warming and the changing weather patterns and ocean temperatures; it's too late to point the finger. She said it, " humans don't learn from their mistakes." Just my humble opinion.
