I completely agree. I'm an enthusiast sailor. I race since I was 16. I've been part of good and winning teams. Facing the sea and the bad weather for few days is already enough. You enjoy your "race against the nature" and you accept to stay awake for your 4 hours shift, then go inside, eat something that "comes in, goes out, taste disgusting, but keeps you going", clean yourself with some wipe and sleep on a rigid berth... till the next tackle!! Travel the world is something different. And you need a boat made for that..... like Amels!

Was at the Düsseldorf Boat Show at the weekend. Looked at the new Hallberg Rassy 57, Oyster 565, CNB 66 wasn't on show but her bigger sister so had a good impression of quality and convenience, and lastly the Amel 60. The HR starts at 1.8 million incl. tax, Oyster wouldn't quote but I guess around the same as CNB which starts around 1.5 million not including tax and has an extras list as long as my arm, and finally the Amel 60 which starts at just under 2 million with a extras list of goodies to push the price up accordingly. All the yachts are beautifully made with varying levels of comfort and sailability. The HR is a real sailers boat. Solid with excellent woodwork and with the twin helming stations, a big leap forward. I looked in every nook and cranny and didn't see anything which wasn't finished to perfection. There is a hard biminy option which makes it look even more solid and with the automated winches, in-mast furling etc, probably really easy to sail either alone or with two. The CNB is just perfection. Spoke to a young guy called Lukas Heyde. Very nice and helpful and obviously in love with the product. Everything about her deck and interior layout (which is the same on the 66, but smaller) is finished to very high standards. Has a Man Overboard emergency option, meaning, if the skipper etc falls off the boat, the dongle around his/her neck tells the boat they are no longer on board. The boat automatically turns into wind and stops. It also has a "Keep on Station" and remote option which is GPS controlled making it very easy, apparently, to dock the boat short handed or even alone. The Oyster is also beautiful, well equipped and with it's big side windows, a real delight to look at from inside and outside. I couldn't really find anything about the boat to complain about, apart from the three sales guys sitting in the salon who were not interested in speaking to potential clients, but more in their iPads. Then came the Amel 60. This boat seems to be a floating collection of superlatives. Everything mentioned in this video is true. You can do everything from that cockpit without having to go out on deck once. At least not after the initial set up. There isn't any part or corner of the boat which isn't draw dropping. From the set up on deck, the sail configuration possibilities, the relax area space and and and. My only gripe is the laminated deck. Maintenance free but teak just looks and feels better. The interior layout, galley, cabins, salon area and nav-station are a pleasure to behold. If I ever decide, the Amel is definately on my short list.

We have a Teak deck and i can tell you that after 10-20 years teak will be a major headache. It obviously depends on how it's maintained, but mine was looked after by contractors and they have wrecked it. I am looked at almost a third of the value of the boat to replace it. Never again.
@petem63543 жыл бұрын
Yes, the idea of the laminate deck isn't initially appealing but this was a part of Henri Amel's original 'keep it simple' idea. In 20 yrs the deck will still be immaculate whereas teak will need a complete re-furb.

I've sailed through enough ocean storms too appreciate the advantages this boat offers. At 64 I still have the desire too do some serious cruising but I don't want exaust myself struggling with a vessel that requires more movement and physical energy at sea too manage. This boat has simplified everything and automated everything too such a degree it's sit back and enjoy the ride, that's what I'm looking for. I want too survive the ride and come back fresh and ready for the next adventure. Also so many of the vessels in this level come with teak decks. I don't want to clean and oil teak decks. I like AMELS gel coat decks. One less thing to do. More time for day trips, shopping, visiting sites etc. Less maintenance more relaxing and fun. Those teak decks add an extra $200,000 to the cost of the boat. There is your cruising kitty right there. More pocket cash less work. Let's go sailing .

Very nice. A few suggestions he might consider since he has the resources... 1) putting a camera in the prop window to obviate the need to lift the bed and stowage. Also cameras elsewhere perhaps as permanent through hulls to show bow anchor drop down and separately the keel situation. Of course, a few for dolphin watch. 2) replace the drive motor with a powerful electric one with an extra stator and generator for redundancy. Such a setup should be a lot more reliable and obviate the need for the hydro-generator while operating cooler, quieter, being powerful, fewer easier maintenance, and being more dependable. 3) upgrade to inductance stove and oven, obviating the need for propane and managing its availability 3) More solar panels and batteries. Amel should be offering such a configuration already, actually together with an electric motor on the dingy with an adequate battery. Oh well.

I dream about owning a sailboat and being a live aboard. I completely agree with this owners viewpoint that you don’t always want to be in the sun and wind. In my hometown of San Diego people actually spend more time seeking shade than baking in the sun. Plus when the cold onshore winds blow in the wintertime it just pulls heat out of your body. It’s fun to get insight into how the Amel functions as an actual comfortable home, not simply a floating structure where the occupants are grinding away month after month.

The Amel is such a great boat, and I like his concept of first circumnavigating with "training wheels," then he'll do it his own way. Smart, as is the concept of redundancy, if you can afford it, and the time to maintain all those systems. It's difficult enough to maintain single systems, but with redundancy, you are never stuck. I currently have a 50' motor yacht, but I also sail and am considering an older Amel for circumnavigating upon retirement in a few years. Thanks for this excellent video!
