Great video, I live on a Jeanneau 45.1 and have sailed in some big weather. It seems all these boats have some weak points, they just all differ from brand to brand. I have had this boat swing on large swells at the bottom valley hitting it too sideways and the snap back is violent, I could see it ripping a mast down on any boat if all the right things lined up. I tend to drop sails in high seas over 15 feet, maybe just half the main for balance and motor. Wind does not bother me, she can take a lot, but if the boat starts flopping back and forth with quick snaps between it is beating the boat up for sure, the more it snaps back the more it beats stuff up. I friend of mine had his 44-foot cement sailboat snap in half from a rogue wave, it just hit him at an odd angle to the sails and snapped it in two, a half mile from shore in Santa Cruz Ca. I am glad you both are safe, boats come and go.

Just saw this on my feed and very interesting. I feel for you and from what I am seeing you made it to land and hopefully you have been able to put things back together by now. Some of the over the top ignorant comments really are disturbing, I have sailed for over 5 decades now on many different boats racing and also cruising (now full time cruising) and I would never assume anything I would do differently than you did. You made it safely and got through something many would not be able to cope with! Glad you folks are OK and hope you are enjoying your sailing life! Cheers Mike and Ally 🇨🇦 S/V Bears Mistress II

The bend on that chain plate you had straightened is witness to a great force.
@tipirick17 күн бұрын
The cause may be hidden yet. Even though my rig was “recently replaced” the seller provided no proof. I bought new chainplates, standing rigging, removed the mast and after much debate with my crew who anxiously wanted to get out to crossing the Pacific, disfavored painting the mast and installing a taller VHF antenna, I first dismissed that crew, then proceeded on stripping the mast, cleaning to bare, priming and finishing with epoxy paint. Found the intermediate shroud cross-bolt with its surrounding sleeve sawed by an internal halyard about through the sleeve and beginning on the bolt-- 40 years of mast pumping slightly back and forth caused this internal halyard to saw back and forth relentlessly making its way through the one bolt that, when severed, would release the new rigging and bring down the mast. Boat cost $40K, so far I’ve spent $40K refitting, $40K yet to go, minimum. Then about 2 years of breaking in both the boat and me more, then maybe The Pacific, but by that time I may just choose give it up and “sell away”. Whatever, I find the whole endeavor rewarding in every way and am learning much, especially from your sacrifice. Thank you and let us all know the rest of the story as soon as you can transmit. Beware the tow company pirates near shore.

Being dismasted is something that can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons (I have experienced being dismasted on a sloop during an Atlantic crossing) however what I fail to understand is why losing one mast on a two masted vessel should result in losing both masts. The reason for this is clearly the triatic. On a boat such as the Amel and many other ketches which are well rigged, the triatic is both unnecessary in supporting the masts and as demonstrated in this accident resulted in the loss of both masts. Had the mizzen remained standing it would have been possible to complete the passage without outside assistance.
@SailingAquarius5 күн бұрын
Yes, and some people re-rig the triadic so that it can be released at the bottom of the mizzen. The reason that it's required is, it is the forestay for the Mizzen Mast. Anyways let's hope that this does not happen to another Amel SM owner. Fair Winds

Interesting video. However, must be for US insurance companies. I had a dismasting in the Med a while ago and my german insurance company did neither as for all these papers as they had most of them on file and they don‘t ask you about your experience. A logbook is mandatory so that should be no problem. They also wired 15000 Euros within a day or two to cover for the initial costs. There seems to be a huge difference between the two continents..

Glad to have news ! And what happens to the other boat now ?
@jacobdanielkuiper574423 күн бұрын
It happened to a boat I was crewing on. Your one preventive measure is your imagination. When this happens, this is what I’ll do. Carry a saws-all. (We did the same, save everything) the masts have 50.000 worth of equipment on them. You need your antenna .2nd masts don’t sink! Do not leave trash for others to run in to. What the insurance company does with it all is up to them, you really have no control over that part, not a good reason to start dumping stuff.

I get smashed for this every time I say it but here I go again...... sailing yachts are built too light to handle open ocean conditions, yes they get away with it most times, but regularly, even monthly there are disasters mentioned about sailing yachts. I say this as a boat builder and a retired Master Mariner. In effort to save weight boat builders push the boundaries of what is sustainable at sea. If you knew how fibreglass/carbon fibre yachts were built you would not touch one. (Gellcoat covers a myriad of f/ups) every cat manufacturer I know and almost every mono hull yacht builder I can think off has had horrendous problems, just search YT and F/book sailing channels for a staggering range of builders that build (unprintable word) yachts/cats. The clock needs to move back to solid built, 200% over stress fittings/fixtures and until that happens things like this will continue to happen. let the Pros have their 90 foot/carbon/hell machines - for the other 99% of yacht cruisers, let us have solid stable seaworthy boats.

Thank's for all the effort to find out what really happened, it helps everyone in the sailing community not just those on Amels. Did you find a solution? Should everyone with whisker poles mounted on the side of the mast be looking to reinforce the mast in this area to prevent the tube buckling under compression? Maybe the fix is simply to go back to the traditional arrangement of mounting poles on a track on the front of the mast so compression is on the strong axis?
