I think Kung Fu Panda is one of those movies that is meant to be rewatched, because there is actually a lot of depth to these character relationships that doesn't get explained in the first movie. Shifu really did love Tai Lung like a son, but his biggest mistake was promising him that he could become the Dragon Warrior through hard work and dedication. When he ultimately wasn't chosen, it felt like a betrayal. Everything his life had built up to was taken away, and Shifu didn't even question Oogway's decision. Shifu seems to be a lot stricter with Tigress than he was with Tai Lung, most likely because he's trying to become a better father figure by learning from his past mistakes.

Its the warring ideology of Oogways Hinduism (You can't make a peach tree grow apples) vs Shifus Taoism (You can choose where to plant it). He thought he could train a person to be destined but Doorway knew that Tai Lung was an apple tree not a peach tree

Caught a few minutes when I visited a few weeks ago, and other than Po being a teacher to them as they somehow got mystical powers, similar to Po’s dragon warrior abilities, it seems they made it similar to Beetleborgs or Power Rangers SPD, where the MC’s have supernatural powers.
