Here are some very simple exercises that you can do with your horse to help teach them how to respond to pressure from the bit and the leg. Groundwork can be a very useful tool!

It would be helpful to see you start this with a green horse to show what can happen, and how to deal with those difficulties. As you say here, it doesn't go as well the first time.

If you cut the vegetables into smaller portions, it will take less time and less energy.

Be careful driving and filming with yr phone, could be dangerous and u could also be stopped and fined. I really enjoy yr videos showing us how u do dressage. Thank u.

Noticed a few good boys then some of those hard pats, not many, a few rubs, wouldn't more neck/wither scratches be more of reward?

I worked with my horse today, doing turn on the forehand and some lunge work. You are absolutely correct, it is so harder than it looks. Going left no problem, the right was pretty stiff even after he had a professional message about an hour earlier. He was awesome on the lunge going to the left, but he refused to lunge going to the right. I didn't want to punish him in anyway if he was so stiff, but any input/advice would be appreciated. He is an educated older horse and I am in the process of retraining to get a more willing partner. Thanks.

What do you do if they just twist their head at the poll? My OTTB does not like to bend his head to the right and cheats.

This is good Amelia. I've watched a few of yr videos now. And I enjoy yr style of providing simple digestible instruction to impart some of the essential principles. I tried these exercises yesterday & have come back for another look today to see how I measured up. I'm struggling with contact shoulder control & basic steering. So I'm going back to some foundational work to help us improve. After riding for several decades I'm embarking on dressage riding. (pony club as a child was the last time I worked on anything dressage), so it's a big change for me - now mid-50's & for my Arab mare, now 15!! But I'm grateful for yr help! So thankyou for sharing! 🐴🙏

Thanks for watching Benita, and don’t forget to subscribe to get notified of my new weekly content! Thanks for sharing your journey with your Arab! The groundwork will definitely help, it's absolutely the best place to start when working with a new horse or trying to teach something new. I hope you get on great. ///// I'm not sure if you know this but, I've been lucky enough to qualify BOTH of my horses (Harvey & Kensington) to compete in the Dressage Festival of Champions in Chicago, if you are willing and able, even the tiniest donation to my GoFundMe would make a massive difference. You can read more and, (but only if you'd like to and have the capacity!) donate below! gofund.me/2989323b Also, you can sign up to get my weekly dressage tips sent to your email here! www.ameliasdressageacademy.com/subscribe/ Finally, if you love my content, I’d LOVE if you left me a review on google! g.page/r/CYIGmCINXFOQEAo/review Thanks so much for being on my page! Yes. The turn on the forehand is difficult to do! We don’t realize how much the horses push on us with their shoulders until we try to do this exercise good luck keep at it it will get better!!

Thank you! He definitely was leaning on me - it was such a nice change to be able to work from the ground and then it made my riding make more sense in regards to how much pressure to use for bend and everything else. You have a great talent for explaining. I love your channel and have learned so much. Great work!

You can! Even 5 minutes can help, but typically a 15 min session can be effective. I'm doing a groundwork webinar about piaffe (and other aspects) tomorrow, hope you'll come! amelianewcombdressage.com/free-webinar-piaffe/
