This was brilliant to hear. My horse bulldozes through my half halts and wants to race around the arena. By the way you worded it, I realized that my half halts are less-so a tightness in my core, and more-so leaning forward and pulling. I’m going to focus on leaning back and breathing.

The mare I ride behaves exactly like this and my instructor has me do the lateral moves you’re doing but I prefer your explanation on when to use the shoulder fore, what to look for, and when to release.

Sometimes it's hard for an instructor to get all the theory into a 45 minute lesson AS you're riding and they're instructing you on what to do :) I'm glad you liked the video

Thank you Amelia with the clear explanation. My instructor taught me to do outside flexion to slow down the horse and it works with the school horse. Next i will try to bend inside. It’s always nice to have a different approach

I am doing some lessons on a horse exactly like Mercurio in how he heats up as the ride progresses, and I have a bad tendency to lean forward, so it's been a disaster, haha... I am leasing a pony who also gets fast when you pull, so this is exactly what I needed RN! You are reading my mind or something, it's crazy, you always do a video on a subject right when I need it!

Some days my horse is just right, but other days after we warm up, it's like he's got zoomies! I rarely can do straight lines with him on those days. LOL! This is a good reminder for me. Thank you!

Hi Amelia, my horse is exactly as you said. When I start he is lazy or sometimes super lazy, but more we get deeper into the training, doing a lot of transitions, sometimes he gets hot. Generally he stays at the right level of energy, but sometimes too hot. I always try to calm him down with serpentines, but also touching with inside hand and talking to him. He is very reactive to my voice so I use it. Anyway, I liked your suggestion regarding controlling our own energy, this helps a lot. When I am super powered I need to come to walk for a few circles, come down with my energy and then start again with a slower trot more controlled way. But this is challenging for me right now. We he is getting super hot it takes me a while to bring him back. Thank you, I will try to follow additionally your recommendations.

Just keep repeating the exercise very calmly, until you get the response you're aiming for. Let it take the time it needs to take

A very good instructional video, thankyou Amelia! My horse is very rushy & i constantly work on trying to regulate & relax her. I've always used the smaller circle to slow her & avoid the pulling. But, i like your strategic method that puts all the various aspects together, to attain greater control overall. You're just a masterful trainer - great approach! 😘👍🐎🙏

My horse is always going faster and just everybody says do a lot of tempo changes, pull on both reins and your horse should learn you legs are around. So nice to see it can learned a different way with her....I am confident I will succeed with this approach. Thank you a lot Amelia.

The only problem I expercience is getting her back from canter. She will get her head up and pull on the reins. I try to let my reins a bit loose, make a 20m circle and say hoooo. Kind regard, José

Your timing is always spot on for me. We have had such bad air quality in Oregon and then a minor injury so we have not been able to ride in months and now my horse is sooooo forward and we have no brakes. Yesterday I lunged since our ride the day before was so wild. But then she ran wild on lunge I am not a fan of letting my horse get crazy on lunge line but how else do you get rid of all that energy?

I agree, crazy on the lunge is not what we want. If you have safe turnout or can let them have some time in arena turnout, that can help :)

This is exactly how I have been slowing down my keyed up horse…even including the turning round bushes in the field with cows…counting…slow rising (posting)…but my instructor says that the mare now anticipates the circle when I want her to slow and I should teach her to accept my hand by pulling on both reins???

Pulling on both reins will not work. She will learn to pull back and she's much stronger than you.

My horse is a bit like Macurio. He is a Croatian warmblood and looks a bit like a PRE - strong built and not so tall. He has a strong mind and test me both in riding and handling. He uses tempo and being strong as evasion. Sometimes it’s also a balance issue if he is speeding. Steady tempo is definitely what we need . And turning shoulder for and taking releasing the medicine. Any other tips on horse that uses speed as evasion?

When it gets cooler/cold my horse goes faster in his trot. Part of the of the barn is heated (for the automatic waterers) but the indoor arena is not. Could he be reacting to the temperature change? He doesn't slow down, I will work on this....more circles and things. Thank you.

Make sure you are varying exercises to keep him guessing. He sounds like a smart boy. Try serpentines in shallow loops, ribbon candy exercises, and snowman with transitions! And lots and lots of half halts. and transitions. Happy Riding!
