It’s clear Anna Bey is “not as interested in luxury” at the moment because she just released a clothing line that is nice and in a mid to higher price range, but would not fall in a “luxury” category. She would seem hypocritical if she didn’t seem to be less interested in full on luxury. She’s trying to straddle both worlds for her marketing purposes. She’s not selling her Hermes bags…just wearing them with HER clothing line. Most of these creators that are “rethinking luxury” already have fabulous collections to enjoy.

People using the word "awakening" implies (in my opinion) that those who still indulge in luxury goods are somehow still "asleep" or "blind". And that's the holier-than-thou tone I really don't like about their videos and posts. It's fine if you decide you're done spending your money in this way. It's not fine to act like there's something wrong with those who still do.

The piece here is the difference between acknowledging unhealthy behaviours and seeking to address them but not then projecting those on others . It’s actually not about handbags at all and when content creators miss the point on this as an individual wellness issue vs a handbag issue it can be very off putting to those who are not having those issues but are simply enjoying their handbags . Thanks for sharing ❤️☺️

I roll my eyes seeing some of those “brainwashed into luxury” videos. Some of us truly love fashion & style. If you’re using luxury handbags to fill a void or insecurity then it’s wrong. You can do that with food, beauty treatments or anything else. I think there are some genuine creators, but I think others are hoping on the trend & dramatizing it. It is possible to shop luxury in moderation & not do so to fill a void.

I don't buy luxury items, mainly because I don't have the budget, but I love to watch videos of luxury bags. This discussion about "awakening" (more like, "moving on from this kind of content"), sounds to me more like those trends of old like "booktube is dead" because "booktube promotes consumerism", or "the beauty community is dead" because "beauty vloggers promote consumerism", and so with the planner community, and the knitting community and so on and on and on. It's a natural cycle that people move on from one topic to another, but when it happens with content creators that usually creates these movements of "x is no more", "x promotes this bad thing" and so on. It's great when some people can afford luxury items and show them to us, so we can learn (and not be fooled by people trying to scam us or trick us), but it also gives us a window to know about certain items we could use as a reward for ourselves, if your budget allows it.

I don't watch the channels you mentioned but I've seen a video or two here and there and my impression (perhaps wrongly) is that they care too much about what other people think. It seems like the bags were a way to gain status rather than something they loved. And for me, if you're in your 20's or later before you realize that material things are not important and what other people think of you is not important and how ridiculous it is to have to look a certain way or own certain things to be accepted by certain people...it's difficult for me to take you seriously. I don't think their viewpoints on luxury represent most of the people who watch our channels who enjoy handbags for personal reasons, not for other people.

I enjoy watching your videos, mainly because of your bright personality. I did watch Nikki’s and Anna’s videos and honestly I don’t get the feel that they are insinuating that they are better than those who still collect and enjoy purchasing luxury. I think they’re just sharing how they personally feel and where they are in their journey. I agree with you that people evolve and priorities change. I for one have always had a passion for fashion. When I was working, I owned a lot of high heel shoes, bags, etc. I still own lots of bags but I have stopped purchasing them as often - because I think bag prices are a bit insane now - and I have sold many, simply because I have too many and I don’t go out much anymore. I also have sold more than 40 pairs of high heel shoes because I no longer wear them. I kept 2 for special occasions. I think people care too much of what other people think. I say enjoy your journey & have fun. If people judge you, so what? Let them.

I've watched Anna and Eileen. I would point out that neither say they no longer shop, but in their own way have decided to really think about what they buy to hopefully avoid mistakes and clutter. I can also see Anna mentioning the toxic culture she herself has witnessed though perhaps we haven't. It can come across as a lecture but in many cases I don't think it is meant that way. As for me. No, not stopping but definitely being cautious.

I am elderly, and since I’ve watched your channel and other bag channels it has caused me to have an awakening for the love of luxury handbags. In the last year and a half, I’ve purchased about 40 bags. It really isn’t fun to wear your new bag where I often go, to the doctor’s office. Now I think it is enough for me to buy, maybe one, once a year, but I will still enjoy seeing these bags on your channel and other luxury channels. Love love your channel ❤

I do think there are some channels that have had this “awakening” because they have seen a decline in views as the average consumer stopped being able to afford any or as much luxury and didn’t need the bag reviews or wanted to avoid temptation. As other commenters noted it is easy to pivot when you have multiple Hermes dream bags and a robust collection in your closet. At that point they figure why keep buying when my collection feels complete but they still want to be relevant in the community. If you are financially sound then indulging in what makes you happy whether it be high end handbags, sporting events, travel, collectibles - whatever is your “thing” - is absolutely a reasonable expectation.

Hi Amelia. I will comment here because sometimes feels good to share an opinion . Is hilarious how somebody that have no part on making the money that you make, can have an strong position on how you should spend it.We humans are really funny. And that reminds me of something i read that life goes between pain and boredom( I think Schopenhauer). If i remember correctly is the pendulum theory, we circle around the center from one side to the other. And i certainly agree with that. We just dont do it at the same time or some people like me seems to be stuck in one side lol( this enthusiasm for bags never die!). In any case, and again is just my opinion, we need something to escape daily life that might not be functional or appealing to others. What can we do? It is what it is. To give you an example, the colors of bags you buy will never be a choice for me, I prefer neutrals and I can not deal with colors. Why? I have no idea. Maybe past experiences, my astrological sign…. I dont know. I have tried to like bags in vibrant colors and I end up selling them or giving them away. But your enthusiasm for bags and the way you present your info, makes me want to use my time to come and watch your videos. Is like hanging out with a friend that share the same passion. And again, my personal opinion, but i think thats the value of what you do, you make people like me have a little time of enjoyment and happiness. We all gonna die one day and I am sure at that moment we will not regret things we did that made us feel genuinely happy. Some of my friends in real life spend their money eating out or drinking or traveling. That works for them, and I have tried to do it because we are all humans and sometimes we see others doing things and you try them. Thats how you discern what makes you happy or not, especially if you live with awareness, which I dont know if everybody lives like that? But after many trials I always come back to the same point. I dont particularly enjoy the discomfort of traveling and dont enjoy drinking and the bottom line is that i enjoy material things that i touch, look at, wear, smell and many more verbs that i can use. My point is that you do you and we wont appeal to everybody at the same time. And if somebody has an opinion, well is just an opinion….. especially in cases that opinions wont make a difference between life and death and you know really deep consequences.A Dr’scriteria on a treatment might change an outcome that can impact quality of life… I am just talking about light topics like bags or what to do with your free time and things like that. Sorry for the long comment, I am particularly chatty today. In any case, your content makes me happy girl, especially those days that life is very hard and a video from your channel pops up in my feed. Thank you:)

I plan to continue spending as I have in past within my comfort zone. 0 debt, home paid, I have a 30 year old couch and buy much of my clothing second hand. But I also love my handbags and luxury items I choose to buy. While I'm sure different people have different reasons, at this point I think some influencers are being influenced themselves to stop their lux habits. And perhaps that is a good thing for them in the long run, if the desire has gone they should not continue.

I have felt that way from those videos. Finally you're talking about it. Years I go, I still collected bags, I had at least 20 bags. But they were all coach, and guess, michael kors, and that sort of brand. But honestly, when I saw that investing in these luxury bags, I could get some money back, if not all of it back, or maybe more, then I saw the other ones as more of a waste of money investment wise. I can't see any of my MK bags because they don't sell for more than $50 resale. And they are bags I bought for $200-$400. I did 't think of resale value. I still wear my MK, but I've ended up having 150 bags, mixed of luxury and contemporary. I do wear them by the way. But I do feel bad that I have 150 bags when I watch those types of videos of minimalism. But when those videos are not playing, I feel great looking at my collection 😂. I won't sell my brand new looking MK bags for pennies, I won't do it. I just won't. So I don't mind using them and having them forever. And passing them on to my daughter. Loved this video.

What I found interesting (ironic) about the Anna Bey “awakening” video was a) she sells her own line of linen shirts at $500 a pop which would be a luxury for 95 per cent of the planet b) that she decluttered her wardrobe and put it all up for sale rather than donate it, therefore continuing to participate in the buying/wanting of luxury by others she is decrying c) she earns an income from teaching others how she “manifested” her extraordinarily privileged, rich, travelled, multi home life and wealthy husband in just four weeks (allegedly).

I don't think is toxic at all...I have a couple friends who loves to buy vintage cars....and it makes them happy and it actually bond them together, something common that they shared...like my husband passion is in properties and he buy them....and my friend interested in golf sets and it gives her an outlet to distress....which everyone needs that...there is nothing wrong to pursue things that makes you happy...that motivates and keeps you forward before you reach the oasis. I think the distinction lies within the person themself. If they are only buying things for external validation and not buying them to satisfy their own needs/wants they will never be content. It’s not actually a question of following trends. It’s about going deeper into who the person is and understanding the motivations of what they do. These people (the ones who have awoken - and not to their true self) will never be happy whether they have everything or nothing. They may get something out of it in the moment (attention, praise, maybe a real awakening) but it’s about looking at the motivation around what they do. If their motivation and intention is genuine and pure then they won’t care what others think and won’t feel the need to share but the sharing of the enlightenment and pedestal placing of themselves is an outward display of their insecurities. Next.

I haven’t watched all of these KZbinrs but if they’re making it seem like they’re superior, then I have a problem with that.😖 Are they doing this as it’s now trendy to not want luxury? I don’t know. My collection is very small compared to most so NO I won’t be giving it up. I do understand people like Eileen who realized she was putting too much importance and valuing her luxury too much. She still has a nice collection but now just a more curated one. Everyone is different and I don’t judge either way. I think as long as your bills are paid and you’re not going bankrupt then all is good.🥰

It’s all relative. If you can afford it there’s no problem. My husband would kill me if he knew how much I spent on bags. I’m slowing down because I only need a few bags and many end up collecting dust. I’m also trying to save for another property and a few grand here or there on bags adds up and hinders that process. Love your collection !

First why are haters watching? I collect Jimmy Buffett items, match box and cars and Jaws items.. displaying on few items at a time . And depending on time of year. And yes I have a hand bag collection too. And will add. My husband collection is fishing pole and lures. We have full time jobs and each a small business. So we work hard for our collection and toys... Aka jet skis and boats.

I think most everyone spends money on items they don't need. It's a matter of what brings you joy. Handbags & accessories have always brought me joy! 💛 whether it's clothes, shoes, cars, a huge house, home decor, jewelry, tattoos, gardening, alcohol, WINE lord people spend $$$ on wine 😂, drugs 😬, horses, gambling, online entertainment, prostitutes?!, tech... (kids?! 😂) most people have a "vice" (hobby?! 😅) and arguably some are healthier than others. I think it's so nice when people focus on themselves and doing what's best for themselves instead of comparing and contrasting. As for influencers changing their threads, I concur with your point that they're jumping on what's trendy at the moment. But as you also noted, this might be their entire income stream. It's a little sad when you think about the fact they can't be truly themselves. But that's the bed they made so now they're lying in it 🤭 ...silly little girls 😂🫶🏼

A very thought provoking video! If these KZbinrs are distancing themselves From luxury and saying it’s toxic then I probably do think they are looking to get more views and follow trends. Perhaps some of their previous luxury love was also not as genuine as it could have been and also was to follow trends and get views. I’m really interested in handbags, i love learning about handbags, i love seeing other people’s collections, it just brings me joy. I don’t have to own most of the bags I’m watching, it’s just a genuine interest of mine that I’ve had since I can remember. I also have been ‘inspired’ to buy bags I’ve seen online, I do watch to get ideas on what would work well for me. I think it’s part of the research process when you’re buying something expensive.

You know yourself, nothing to awaken from and I admire that. Some others though who are changing their tune (Anna Bey), I find it hard to believe it’s due to an awakening. I still think it’s because her other affluence business doesn’t fly in today’s economy. The trend has changed so she and others are rebranding and coming across so inauthentic.

That’s the reason I stopped watching videos because of all the fake people making them not only is it toxic and all that but half of them are showing fake items and claiming the real just to try to keep up with the Joneses it’s ridiculous.

I fully agree with both sides of the debate. I also feel a very stressfull and high performing job encourages higher spending, You have such little time to spend and shopping is an easy dopamine boost. Also justified by the amount of time you spend working. This is how it works out for me, but that's OK.

Like you said about falling out of love with things and hobbies I think that’s probably what it is. I don’t think people should feel more superior than anyone else because they no longer like or want to spend money on something they used to enjoy. I used to love makeup videos and tutorials. I don’t watch or like them anymore because I realize I don’t even like wearing makeup like that 😂 we all go through seasons in our life and that’s ok. everyone goes through their own journey. i was into lux when in high school, I went through an awaking of what needed to be prioritized and didn't buy any luxury. then 2013 came around and I stepped into LV for the 1st time. bought my husband his wallet. told myself how dumb it was to spend so much on canvas lol. didn't buy anything after that because of priorities. then another awakening 2019 I realized no point in saving it all if I could be gone one day. i think these people are at the point they are reprioritizing. we all go through it. i am thankful that from 2019-2023 I could go all out. however I'm now at another awakening because my funds cant stretch like that. but I'm not going to be here bashing or making others feel bad. i hope once I get a new job I can come back to buying, but at this point I need to be realistic and that's what they are at as well.

Thank you for another great video Amelia. I apologize in advance, this comment might be a little long. I believe everyone spends their money on the things that bring them joy and nobody has the right to judge anyone. Some people spend thousands of dollars monthly on expensive restaurants, some people spend tens of thousands of dollars traveling and some people spend thousands of dollars on luxury handbags, shoes, clothing. I personally would rather spend thousands of dollars on a handbag that I will get to enjoy for years than going to expensive restaurants that I enjoy for hours but I don’t have the right to tell anyone how to spend their money. It’s also possible that some of these luxury KZbinrs that have recently decided that luxury is a waste of money never had the financial means to sustain a luxury lifestyle, perhaps they thought they would become a successful influencer with millions of followers and reality set in and they were forced to change the direction of their KZbin channel for financial reasons. Those are just some thoughts. Please continue being you, I love watching your videos and I love your edgy style❤

Mike drop!! Well said Amelia! I do think that some of the KZbinrs who are moving away from luxury and becoming a little judgemental to people left in that space are doing it to follow what is popular. It’s like the whole quiet luxury thing that was going on and drove me nuts. Each to their own and I absolutely love watching your channel and others like it. I have a very small collection of my own And I have eventually managed to get the pieces that I really wanted and now I live through you and others like you when you continue to grow your collection etc. And I also learn a lot from you. Thank you, Amelia! I admit that, while I respect that some KZbinrs are moving away from doing luxury videos, I don't watch the "awakening" videos anymore because I find them annoying. As a person who loves her bags and shoes, I feel very talked down to in those videos. There's definitely a "I'm better than you because I no longer waste my money on these things" type vibe to them. Just rubs me the wrong way. Being on KZbin, I'm sure it makes sense for them to explain either leaving KZbin or changing direction of their channel, and that's fine. I just don't need to watch those videos anymore, so I don't. My primary viewing out here is luxury bag videos, so I move on from KZbinrs who shift gears.

First. I could listen to you speak all day. 🥰 Second, I find these ideas of “awakening and revelation” performative. I have loved handbags since I was a little girl, color, texture and structure..love it all. This? It’s another trend. And a bad one. If you don’t want to, don’t. We don’t require the judgement or dissertation on how you’ve “outgrown” handbags.

I work in a luxury real estate space. Some people collect houses. They have residences all over the world and travel between them. Others collect yachts. I don’t see many KZbin channels with people confessing their love for multimillion dollar mansions, but these people are out there. It’s not somehow portrayed as an idle pursuit, unlike handbags.

@@ameliarosescloset I think this is because handbags are commonly associated with females. This gender component makes this hobby somehow less than. Yachts, cars, real estate are symbols of power and wealth commonly assigned to males, and are often celebrated as markers of success. I see this as double standard really.

I think your point about your handbags not representing what you spend all your money on is an important one. When some of my acquaintances learn about my handbag collection they make comments about this being what I “waste” ALL my money on. There’s an assumption that I must be doing this out of an obsession and using every cent on it. They don’t acknowledge the school fees I pay, the holidays I save for, the special experiences I organise for my loved ones for birthdays etc, or the endless health related bills that are paid. It gets somewhat annoying to be considered frivolous with my money when I’m actually not.
