@nikisky -To everyone sending me these videos.. No I’m sorry, I have decided not to make a video covering it. Why you ask??… because I’m not spreading more of these disappointing KZbin videos. Right now a young person out there is looking to purchase their first designer handbag after an exciting job promotion and then they see this title and hear some of these words…It just tarnishes the joy, It tarnishes the joy of what may seem materialistic to others 'just stuff, things' but is still joy nonetheless for them. If this is a ‘true’ transformation then why make this the title of the video, if it is a positive change for one why create complete disarray (negative feeling thumbnail) for someone else’s dream no matter if it’s a handbag a holiday, having kids or quality time with friends. One doesn’t need to out shadow the other.......so after 15 years on YT please listen and realize if you watch these 'topic' there is a lot of smoke & mirrors

Why do you perceive it as disappointing or toxic? Just because someone has made the decision to change their life style, and it differs from yours, why does it bother you? It shouldn't take away from anyone's joy-- just as a minimalist watching a maximalist's videos should not label their videos toxic or disappointing. I found her video to be inauthentic in a way. In my opinion it was pretty pretentious and offensive. Just because she might not feel the need to have luxury accessories anymore, doesn’t make people who enjoy it sheep. It’s pretty contradictory. She still enjoy a luxury lifestyle in general, just without the accessories. Almost hypocritical. She talks about the accessories being a “flaunt” of her wealth, disregarding the other luxury aspects of her life. If I’m being quite honest all of the people getting rid of luxury and suddenly becoming critics of it, seems performative and has become a trend.
@LuxPurselove

I personally didn't find it offensive and I am still very much into luxury. I rewatched her video and she doesn't use the word sheep. I agree with you on everything! I never bought any bag or jewelry thinking that it was a good investment or to compete with someone. I buy them for me and me only! I have a real passion around luxury, less in term of rtw but bags, watches, jewelry, shoes, yes!!! I have 38 luxury bags now and even if I really don’t plan to buy many more, the door will never be completely closed. I have zero intention of getting rid of my collection ! I’m turning 50 and it’s the opposite, I feel it’s my time to enjoy it fully! I don’t have small kids anymore that can ruin my things, I don’t have to think about being hands free because of them. I find it very odd that someone who was so into fashion, beautiful clothes, exquisite handbags and luxury labels could suddenly want to get rid of all of them. I do understand downsizing and getting rid of what you don't use or like any longer but rejecting everything you valued all of the sudden seems a bit drastic. The other thing I don't understand is all of her followers, who followed her because they wanted to see her luxury purchases, now cheering her on for getting rid of all of them. Why? It doesn't make sense to me unless they were jealous and her getting rid of everything brings her down to their level. I just think there's more to all of this than meets the eye. I wonder what kind of car she drives - Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar? Will she be getting rid of her vehicle(s) that also have luxury logos on them? What about her lavish, beautiful home? Will she be getting rid of that too? I mean, she doesn't need those things to define her either.
@LuxPurselove

I find that odd too. I find Anna's approach more realistic but she has her reasons. As for the followers if they really like who they are following they will usually continue to support a channel even with a drastic change as I have seen in some other content creators who went from unboxing luxury weekly to being extreme minimalists. She said in the comments her home was an investment and she would sell it when the time was right. As for cars I have no idea what kind she drives.

@@LuxPurselove Yes, she replied that she drives a Tesla because it's a safe car but there are many other non-luxury cars that have won awards for safety. She also said her home was an investment but wouldn't it be a better investment to own multiple properties bringing in income instead of owning one expensive mansion taking up a lot of your income? I felt she was making excuses and seemed a bit lost. I didn't want to make her feel any worse, so I didn't respond. I think she should take time off, away from social media, and find herself without doing it in front of an audience.

Congrats on 30k Melinda 🎉 I think this is a likely outcome for many people that perhaps find they indulge too hard too early in life where things are still inclined to change pretty significantly- especially phases of parenting etc. Most people doing this aren’t past parenting young children yet, are maybe 30… to mid thirty… my observation- I’m sure there’s more to it tho. That’s why I’m pleased I started later in my life as I see less significant life changes affecting my wardrobe ahead of me (touch wood) than had I started in my 20s.

Goodness, I didn’t get a luxury hand bag until I turned 50 and I enjoy my collection so much. It is curated and every bag was bought with its purpose as well as its beauty. I do a clothing budget every year and my closet is a one in makes one go out..but not my favorites.. I wear and use and repair until they can’t be any more. I don’t resell even though I have bought a few preloved items. I have donated or gifted items that didn’t work out for me. I don’t worry about others choices ..but I do enjoy you tubers who show what works for them and brings them joy. It helps since I don’t have time to shop as I work full time an hour away from any luxury shopping.

I admire her for making this decision and I never have watched her channel. Personally I found myself buying some luxury items (bags, jewelry, convertible) not long after I lost my husband. It doesn't take Freud to figure that one out! After a few years, I sold nearly every item and it taught me a lesson. I love and appreciate beautiful, well made items, but I want things that are truly unique, understated, and without logos. Maybe it's my personality too because I don't like the spotlight and when I was wearing the Cartier watch and carrying the LV bag, it felt flashy to me. Again, that's just my personality and no shade to anyone who wears the logos. I know myself and the fulfillment they brought me was fleeting.

Some of my luxury bags were gifted to me by my hubby for birthdays, anniversaries, & retirement and hold sentimental value, nothing to do with competing with other women or following trends. Thank you. This was the first sane reaction video to Nikis video. So many were bashing her and that is so wrong. People change and peoples style and priorities change. She was explaining from her point of view and her opinion. As someone who has worked in luxury I have seen a large amount of people who certainly do buy things just for status. Yes there are some who don’t, some that genuinely love the item but the majority are. Sometimes people are just offended by the truth. Loved this reaction.

Congratulations on reaching 30k! It’s very well deserved. I have been very unwell for the past month with something that sounds very similar to what you have. There’s some nasty bugs going around the world. I hope you get better soon. I watch Nikki’s video and I thought she had some valid points. What concerns me though is that minimalism and getting rid of logos is a trend at the moment and I don’t know her well enough to know whether she is going to think like this forever, or bitterly regret getting rid of all her luxury goods when the trend turns in the opposite direction again. That’s what I am not convinced about. Are these women really committed to minimalism or are they bandwagon jumping and not realising it? I think Anna Bey’s solution was far more sensible, keeping what she has, slowing down on luxury shopping and seeing what happens and how she feels in a few years time. I think we all need to think about why we buy luxury, not for a week or a month, but over a long time and then do what is best for us because everyone is different.

She is so young and we have experience. Will she regret these sales and want her things back only to find them at a much higher cost? I liked the way Anna went about it better too. It makes more sense to me.

You summarized her new pov nicely. In her first video it looked like she was just getting rid of low priced trendy clothes. In her second video it was clear she's really moving away from luxury labels. I'm sure she'll still keep some of her Hermes and Bottega. The video did make me think of slowing down consumption overall, and maybe a spring clean up. To your point as her life stage evolves she might come back to luxury in some form. I was not interested when my kids little, my interest came back now that they are almost grown.

She did say only bags with logos would go so I assume she will keep some of her more discreet bags as well. I didn't start luxury bag buying until my kids were older so that also could play into her feelings. I did a big spring closet clean and I have slowed down a bit too and it feels nice!

I agree that our lives change as we go through seasons. I recently retired and find the bags I used to carry to work (Speedy 25 and 30 classic) aren’t working for me much anymore. I would carry them to work, sit them in my desk drawer and then carry them home. I find now I’m looking for convenience, which means I carry my smaller bags like my LV Eva, Pochette Accessories, and Gucci Soho Disco as they fit what I need and go cross body. I’m not going to get rid of the other bags I have yet as I’ve had them for years and wouldn’t want to try to replace them. They cost so much more now than what I paid for them! I really enjoyed your video and congratulations on 30,000 subscribers!

I love your commentary on this video. I always tend to be more cautious of KZbinrs that do a huge 180. More so regarding no more luxury. If she was the first one or has been on this road months ago, I would say interesting. But the luxury sector have so many influencers doing the minimial route and it just comes off disingenuous. KZbin is her business so you have to think how is this new route benefiting her financially. Or was her previous content no longer providing, did she lose sponsorships? I’m just thinking out loud here.

I always wondered how she could afford so much luxury and I was glad to see that she discover what is really valuable to her and her lifestyle. Some people are commenting on her luxury bracelets that she's keeping and wearing in the videos. She didn't get rid of those because I believe they were gifts from her family. Materialism is gone too far in my opinion even though I am a jewelry collector, handbag collector, I made very savvy purchases. I see through these luxury brands that make you line up just to buy their items. I've never done that and I'm totally against it. It's a sales tactic to make us purchase more. I support Nikki Skye's decision for her life!

I thought Niki said she was getting rid of bags with an obvious logo. That would be most of her bags I’m sure, but not everything. I can understand her points as well as the one’s you make here. Over time I realized that I felt uncomfortable with bags with obvious logos so I guess I gradually wound up with a more curated collection. I adore every single one of my bags though and no longer have a constant need to keep adding more. It can definitely feel more calming. I understand both opinions. At the end of the day it’s a very personal decision and no one should be judging others on what they are doing with their own money as long as they aren’t causing harm to others. Humans that are obsessed with what other humans do always puzzle me. I experienced versions of adults bullying me in a “socially acceptable way” when I was vegan for a few years. It was soooo bizarre. I would just be standing there or sitting there quietly minding my own business and randomly someone would say something rude to me. I NEVER shamed anyone and didn’t even talk about my diet. It was sooo weird! I’ll never forget that experience for as long as I live. Why are you sooo bothered by what other people do for themselves?! 😆

As an “young average person” who loves luxury. I’ve absolutely been negatively impacted by the rise of luxury creators who have managed to make me feel less than and ungrateful for what I have due to me being a more impressionable age. I also felt logos made me feel icky, I felt guilty wearing outside around people who may be struggling AND it made me feel unsafe actually. So I’m happy that these convos are happening. It’s more relatable for majority of us. + the idea of hoarding luxury bags, for what? It’s an obsession if you have a huge collection. Truly. However getting rid of EVERYTHING? I don’t get it. The sudden abrupt change. Anna also she makes me question it. Truth is, everyone is trying to sell something. Both are simply pivoting to another topic which may gather more views (and money) and it makes sense for their lifestyle.

I watched her video as well. I think I am subscribed, but don’t get a lot of her videos in my feed for whatever reason. I found it odd because how drastic it was. To make a complete 180 and remove all of her luxury branded items is pretty dramatic. But I also found it odd that she made a living for years as an “influencer” and promoted buying extremely expensive items to other women, and now she seemingly following the new trend of “quiet luxury” “curated closet” etc. She definitely makes very good points, I can’t argue that. But it seems a little like the neighborhood crack dealer who got all the kids hooked is now a clean loving yoga instructor that lectures on the dangers of drugs. 😬 Most of her points never applied to me since I didn’t buy my first luxury item until the age of 52. By that time I owned multiple homes with no mortgages, had money and investments, etc. I don’t compete with any other women as most of my friends are not into luxury. This is just pure FUN. My bff and I enjoy our epic shopping trips and the treasures we find. But I can only imagine how disastrous that kind of spending would be to younger women who are at a much different point in their financial and family lives. So I don’t doubt her sincerity. It just seems a little drastic to sell everything instead of just pumping the breaks a bit. But if that what she needs to do, then good for her. Personally, when I finally keel over from advanced old age, I will probably be wearing one of my beloved Chanel minis! 😅😂

I used to watch Niki. I believe there is more to her getting rid of those stuff that she isn't ready to and wouldn't want to tell us. The thing is, many of these influencers claims these bags are investments. Bags maybe a utility or made for luxury. Many of tjem buy styles and sizes of bags they don't like just because it's "classy" or the next "IT" bag. Many of these bags are also getting really expensive fueled by the influencer driven market. Some of them may not really be able to afford them. Also, their financial situations may change. They may need money for other things. Problem is after they post, some women will watch it and want to emulate her stance on luxury goods. We need to remain true ro ourselves and strive to become better

Interesting video and topic. I haven't watched Niki's video, but as a long time luxury purchaser and student of human behavior, I believe this type of content had more to do with a generation of people being subjected to social media amplifying trends that move at the speed of light so that these individuals never learn to develop a style of their own. When I was growing up fashion took years to change and no one other than people in the fashion business and the ultra wealthy wore the latest runway outfits. Then you could see those runway trends trickle into mainstream fashion maybe 6 months to a year later. Now, with new collections coming every couple of months, because there's capsules and collaborations on top of the standard seasonal shows, trends are changing every month or two. The people in their 20's and 30's think this is normal and now that "quiet luxury" and no logos are having their moment, the people that depend on social media to tell them what style is believe that this is the only acceptable aesthetic. It will be interesting to see what happens when maximalism comes back in a few years.

I agree about people who go minimalist and start trying to shame others. For people who give up their collections because they no longer fit their lifestyles or make them happy, much respect to them. But I think Niki was projecting about competition with other women. I actually bought my first bag because I was inspired by an elegant older woman in her 70s who walked on my street, carrying her Lady Dior. There may be aspiration involved, yes, but not jealousy. I do enjoy watching videos on minimalism but I can tell the difference between practical minimalists and aspirational minimalism. Practical minimalists (there are a lot of Japanese ones) typically wear all black and choose functional items. Aspirational minimalists seem to go for an aesthetic. I think it would be hard to maintain a minimalist wardrobe of whites and light colors, because they would show wear and tear quickly, requiring frequent replacements.

I love owning and buying luxury. However I only allow myself to buy one designer handbag per year. I’m more into household luxury. It’s pretty easy to spot the people who seem to have an addiction to shopping and those who simply enjoy nice things. Your videos are really lovely. We all have a purpose and I do agree if it’s all about shopping then that can’t be healthy.

I think what we are witnessing is just the natural evolution of a person’s journey with luxury. In the beginning, a person is excited to buy, grow their collection, have pretty things. Especially with media and movies and famous people always wearing brands. It’s joyful to feel that yes we can do that too, we can buy that too (usually 20s-30s). Then we realize we have all this stuff that’s taking up space in our closet and we are not really enjoying them anymore, we would rather travel for example. Happens to everyone to a degree. It’s just being filmed now 🤷🏻‍♀️

My impression was she tired of the style of these bags and wanted to make a style change. She then gave reasons why she just didn’t hang on to them. She seemed to have become aware of the very personal style that she had matured into. Only by going through the phase of buying many of the popular conventional luxury handbags did she then become aware that they didn’t suit her style at this phase of her life. As I understood her view, she didn’t want to just hang onto what to her was very expensive clutter.

I think it's a matter of perspective. I own 7 luxury bags and that is enough for me - I have a purpose for each bag. But what is right for me might not be right for someone else. Do I get my self worth from my bags? Absolutely not, but they make me happy to use them. If Niki feels like she needed to get rid of her bags, then that's the right decision for her. I'm not going to judge her. I think it's interesting for sure. I value people over things but my bags are for me and not anyone else - not trying to impress anyone. I just enjoy what I have and I'm thankful for them.

I'm a 68 year old senior who has always loved handbags and jewelry. I have several louis vuitton and gucci handbags but have not paid more than 1500.00 for any of them. These handbags are not investments. I don’t always carry them, but sometimes I do feel like people might think I'm showing off. I just love my handbags, and after all, I deserve it. I say live and let live. So that's my two cents, though no one asked for it.

Niki allowed herself a luxury lifestyle and all the materials her heart desired. Is not really for her to have an opinion if other people want to do so. Suddenly realizing you think fashion is shallow and that your kids bring you joy is literally the most basic mindset that has been repeated on to exhaustion on this platform. Every other minimalist with kids on KZbin essentially.
@janewood2962
@janewood2962 2 ай бұрын
Perfectly said. She really changed when she had kids, which I find sort of odd. I have two myself, you don't need to become a completely different person if your reasons for enjoying fashion were that you just loved fashion. She makes it seem like she is going to have small kids forever. I have never understood women who completely lose themselves when they become a mother. Yes you don't need to totter around in high heels all day, no one is saying that.

I never followed her so I don't know what she was like pre kids and I don't follow any mommy influencers as my kids are grown and I have no interest. The small child phase is so short but it is hard to realize that I think as you are in the thick of it.

Very interesting topic. Since no one known Nickys backside of the story, she may be in an economical situation were she needs the cash now, from divorce, to illness to loss of job to so many reasons. same as mental issues, its so difficult to believe this whole story that suddenly was like a switch and this new persona emerged... I dont buy it, I think is a good way out to a business. she is selling some stuff but that whole collection of bags was not even in the page. and all because of a book??? really?? now she has 2 kids and so what? this phase will pass. im 53 and with a 13 and 20yo. maybe I started this hobby after they were bigger because when they were smaller I liked fashion but was too busy to care enough. but after you are so deep into it, is not a switch. its shady to say. dont buy all that. it you see Caitlin from Australia that went into same route, she mentions the debt and the mental battle with anxiety etc in her channel. when they do this at the level they were trying to reach like Tamara the influencer, not many make it there like her, so the rest what they do? well the trend. This is all my own personal opinion. love the approach you have as a mature woman that can enjoy this things and I feel connected and I identify so well with your views and your info about luxury and the way you enjoy it.

I felt Caitlyn really did discover she had a true problem but she needs to not tell everyone else they do IMO.

@@LuxPurselove JAJAJA, I went for a long career in my field so I waited and had them in my 30's, learned from my mom who had me at 19, to wait and when you are grown and settled with everything you wanted to do first, then have children. she did the inverse, so I corrected, I wanted to be a present mom and professional, reason why I started the luxury taste later than this ladies in her 20's and early 30's. No money back then. ☺

I didn't watch her video but have seen responses to it. As I approach age 62, I have purged majorly over the last year because I simply didn't want as much "stuff". We all go through seasons of life and what is important in those seasons vary individually. I personally do not follow the haul videos. The over consumption diminishes the joy for me. Fill a closet until it is bursting or toss it all. At the end of the day, do what makes you happy. ❤

Her video annoyed me. It was full of generalizations to those of us who like these items and why we buy them. I buy for me and no one else. I hate the attention I get from having these things (even though I have a channel about them). I'm an introvert so when I'm out and someone compliments my item, I get shy and really wish they wouldn't. I liked your video. Thank you. P.S. Yeah I'm pretty sure her young daughter doesn't know the difference between Chanel and whatever else she said. She will one day.

Kids aren't small forever. I'm not hating on anyone with high end Lux. People need not to generalize whenever they decide to make a life change. I haven't bought any in a long time, but I am not judging people who do. People just need to be themselves and stop worrying about what other folks are wearing when they make a major life change

I sold my B 40 for less than 5k USD here in Brazil, that's the reality, at the end of the d at people need to seel more than we need to buy. About the people avoiding us, that's right, someone said to me that would never get close to me because of how imposing some luxury goods made me looks and made him scary to even try to get closer to me which was hurtful to me, I always thought people would admire me, but instead they got jealous and distant. I am 100% sure she has not sold everything. She has put most away out of sight. it's a lie. She may have sold some but i highly doubt she sold everything. She just wants to create a different audience and hop on the luxury no label classic fashion as it's trending. As a designer I have always created my own classic styles and refrained from heavy designer purchases. It's called making wise sensible choices. I own couple Chanels here and there but never hopped on creating Dior, jaquemus, Saint Laurent etc etc room filled with everything trending.
