I've never been a huge fan of Elly Ameling- until this LIVE performance. Now I can hear what a splendid singer she was, high fidelity or not. Wonderful, truly wonderful singing and amazing accompaniment.

Sublime. I strongly believe some composers meld better to certain singers' voices, and Schumann seems so perfectly suited to Ameling's. Wonderful performance. Thank you for posting!

Schumann's wonderful lied requires a singer capable of such technical control and such emotion at the same time. Ameling has it all. She is so poetic in her feeling for the phrases. I believe she sang the role of Illia in Mozart's Idomeneo in Holland, but otherwise prefered to give concert performances.

It's hard to believe, but she's 75 now. Her voice is an amazing instrument, and she kept in good shape by not not overperforming, as opera stars will do. She's a bit past her prime in this instance but any Ameling is better than none at all.

Echo to quelasol and Azzenstudent. Ameling was not underrated. She was (and still is) regarded the foremost Lieder singer of our time. I think that was all she sang. I have an old LP of hers that was devoted to Mozarts opera arias and concert arias. But I seriously doubt that she ever performed in fully staged opera.
