The Amen Brother break played on electric drum pads.
Original amen drum break sampled and chopped up into single hits, mapped onto a sampler triggered by electric drum kit.
In this video I break the Amen down into smaller loops, showing how to play those before putting them together to play the original Amen pattern...

This is very interesting. it's a bit baffling to a traditional drummer to see so many "snare" pads with different keys. but great use of technology to recreate that famous snare "shuffle" sound...

You play it in the pocket, but the original is played on 1 kick, 1 snare and 1 ride... i understand you need a different pad for every sample but this is a seriously convoluted way to recreate something so simple... (still good job on the playing though)
@ashman04
@ashman04 11 жыл бұрын
He does it this way because his kit is set up so that each pad has a tiny piece of the full sample. You'll notice that in the full loop, he never hits the same pad twice. This is because every hit is him just playing slightly further through the full thing.

Because not everyone has money to buy every part that the drum set requires to perform the amen break. It's much simpler to use an electric drum set because he can already load up the samples in the system.

Hey it's Yamaha kit but you could use any electronic drum kit. Midi goes into computer and I was using Kontakt software sampler with the Amen beats chopped onto the separate hits - again you could use any sampler. Now I use Drum Racks in Ableton.

Drum programmers, what are your samplers capable of? It would be great if you could: Assign one bar(1st,2nd,3rd,4th) of slices to the kit at any instance, by a bar selection trigger; But during any instance: 1. The kick pedal scrolls through kicks for that bar, 2. The snare pad scrolls through snares for that bar, 3. The ride pad scrolls through cymbals for that bar.(or two pads-full beat & half beat rides) Supplementary to this- with any bar currently assigned, you can start from any beat within that scrolling bar, dependent of which pad you hit-eg. Bar one: Kick = 1~2~3~4*5*6*7~8* Snare = 3~4*5*6*7~8* Ride = 4*5*6*7~8* Or sliced combinations-eg: (3~4*) (3~4*) (1~2~) (4*5*) (Needs audio!) This is definitely something I would need if I was the drummer.

Hey People. I asked myself and others a couple times, if there is just ONE fucking Rock- or Metal-Band out there, using this kind of drumset with the original-sounding amen break for their songs and live gigs? Caution: I don`t mean, that the drummer just replay the drumloop on normal drums!!! Does anyone know of such a band?

Those electric drums can be costly also, They are not cheap, besides,you can go the the music store and buy a used drum set for a reasonable price, I AM a musician and I DO know what I'm talking about. But if it's easier for someone to use electric drums oh well, so be it, but I'm old school so I like the original way better!

Nice playing - but why spread the same samples across several pads like that?
@oCbreaks

They are not the same samples, they are different parts of the Amen loop. Subtle differences e.g., between the two snare kits give the original feel of the Amen loop

What I'm saying is that if the loop was one second long and he divided it into 10 pieces (one per pad) and he hit one pad repeatedly, it would simply play the same tenth of a second over and over. I imagine you'll have a hard time understanding this, so I've put together a picture - bit . ly/11XTRJ0 Pretend that the whole beat is cut up into blocks like the highlighted part. Then assign each pad to one of those blocks, so you have to hit them in order for it to work.
