It was strange for me when I first came to America, I didn’t tip that much like 10-15% as a student. After living here for couple of years, I’m more used to this culture and willing to tip more to make someone happy. I see people complain about waiters checking on them and they think waiters are asking for money, I think waiters probably more care about if you enjoy your food or not, like is the food cooked as the way you want or not. I think American culture is way more relaxing than Chinese culture, dont take things too seriously. An extra few dollar can delight someone’s life and they provide good service back to you, why not? Thanks Mike for your videos, I enjoy watching them.

@seanyang85346 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, although I don't support tipping, everyone should tip cause it is the culture of America. I usually tip about 12% which I have seen on my bill as minimum recommendation. Also, I won't tip when I need to pay first such as in fast food restaurants. The culture is changing now in Seattle. A few American restaurants have adopted a no-tipping policy. I believe that great service comes from the heart, and money should never be a driven factor in our culture.
为什么美国服务行业工资低啊?服务员不也是给老板服务的么?要不然让老板亲自去接客?服务员只不过是代替老板给顾客服务的嘛。 Why are US service employees low? Does the waiter also serve the boss? Or let the boss pick up the guests personally? The waiter is just a substitute for the boss to serve the customer.

one more question, how do we tip politely and gracefully? how should we say? "keep the change"? thanks for all answers!
Tipping or not tipping should be a choice made by customers. But it seems like it’s kind of mandatory thing in North America. If u don’t tip, you are being cheap. Most of time the waiter/waitress is even annoying but u have to pay.
Hey, Mike, I have a question about this tipping thing for you, it’s common sense that you should pay 20% of bills for the service, how should I Calculate this 20%? Before tax or after tax? Thanks
I'm a student studying in America. I totally accept the custom of tipping. But sometimes when I go to the restaurant, I noticed the waiter had already included the tips I need to pay in my bill, that would make me feel sort of uncomfortable. I think how much will you tip only depends on yourself.
I think there is nothing good or bad. I normally tip 10-20% when I dine out. I don’t mind to tip, but it’s kinda headache for the people come from other countries, because you always need to count taxes and tips on top of the listing price. Why they can’t list a fair price with everything included for not surprising people?
我英语好,遇到不给小费的客人,我会直接怼:“You should buy your food from Walmart and eat it at your home, then you wouldn't need to tip anybody."这话太伤人了,但比起对方不给我小费,这话已经够客气的了!
American tipping is like American outsourcing. Restaurants claim their employee salary isn't already priced in when it is, claiming that it offers better service this way. Sounds familiar on corporate outsourcing saying it'll be better positioned and more competitive when outsourced to somewhere else, yet never passed any saving to its consumers or its employees except the C Suite, it's always about finding new ways to squeeze more money into their pocket.

As far as I know the gratuity rate for restaurant waiters in the U.S. is normally 10%-20% of the sum total before tax, and I'm used to write about 15% on the bill to round the total payment to an integer if possible. I also learned that tipping is applicable only when you're served at the table(where the order is placed), so just forget about it when you eat at restaurants like McDonald's. As a customer I tip to show my gratitude for the service, and I really hate that in some restaurants waiters take it for granted no matter how bad their service is.
In France, when we want to tip, we can give to waiter 1 or 2€, they are happy enough. :)

Tipping could be used as a mechanism for rewards, but it really shouldn't become compulsory ways of paying the waiters. Waiters should earn a much more base salary from the restaurant owners. Essentially the bourgeoisie is diverting the conflicts between them and the waiters to the customers.

If tipping is the local custom in AMerica, let the locals share the burden then. Tourists shouldn't be obligated ed to follow the custom. Right? Tourists also worked hard to have money to travel and tipping is an added expense to them.
@yangyang67896 жыл бұрын
Personally speaking, ideally tipping should be good for rewarding and encouraging people to work harder, but sometimes it seems unfair and makes customer service even worse. It’s making me feel like idiot to pay tips after having a ridiculously expensive but not worth the money meal in a fancy restaurant. Tipping just becomes customers obligation, if you don’t give them you are cheap and rude. Is that really right?
