Mike, you forgot some basics, what you are discussing is just negligible factors like quality, safety , design and etc., it's not important in a large context. As long as you spend money into design, process and testing, it can be done. What matters is the underlining issue: subsidies. Subsidies is not only what you can see in monetary terms. There is an economy term called: externality. For instance: EHS in a plant, salary, working hours, the payment terms for suppliers, the environmental issues, recycling(you've mentioned a bit), license(you've been in shanghai, you know very well), taxation. On top of which the land rights, the financing costs, all in all, it's kept low artificially low. And if you let these product in, you will pay very high price down the road. With regards to Tesla, you could go back and read what happened to Tesla, how much they paid for the land(if any), where did Elon got his financing for the Shanghai plant. And how he got green light all the way through.

能否进入欧美市场,不是取决于市场接受度,而是对于本地相关产业的冲击和融合,无论欧美都不会大举开放市场,那样就会把本土相关产业彻底的击垮,导致大量失业,社会失稳,矛盾剧增,冲突不断,所以只要不是傻子都不会开放市场的,必然通过各种政策条件来保证本地产业平稳过渡的。

在我看来,就是市场自由化的问题,虽然中国的经济市场因为政府独裁专治老被诟病,但是远比美国自由,这里单纯指的是经济市场,不包括政治。在有些人看来,中国人就适合做消费者,不适合做研发者。这才是关键。
