How did you convince an American their own country is better than they think? Honestly - we take this all for granted. I remember when I was younger I would speak of moving because of this and that, but when you look at every other country, those problems aren't just there - they're worse. They're prevalent. They're built into the country's people. I may not always be happy with the way things are - there's always going to be something wrong - but I never realized just how much worse it was in other countries. Thank you for making an exceptional video and having really great comparisons.

This is the first time in… ever, that I have actually had somebody lay America’s strengths and weaknesses with perspective to the rest of the world. I have to say it’s actually motivating as hell to see the potential that the US has. I feel like there’s almost a fear to admit that America is actually doing okay because they’re afraid everybody will become complacent, but it has the opposite effect. Realizing that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel makes me want to get more involved with putting energy towards the solutions.

I suggest reading or watching Peter Zehan. I think k that's his name. Whoever wrote the book "America: the accidental superpower." He provides a MUCH stronger and more accurate description of why America is actually pretty well oriented for success. I think his take is a little overly optimistic as it doesn't fully appreciate just how deep our internal divisions go, but he actually does research. I started watching and reading his stuff bc, despite decades of casual armchair research, i had never known just HOW the US built the current world order. I had always believed it was the UN and NATO combined with the soft power out massive economy allows us. And of course, bc we were so well positioned at the end of the war we got to call the shots of half of Europe and in Japan. But it was mostly the Bretton Woods agreement that defined how the capitalistic West would operate. Everyone loves to hate the US; and we've done plenty to deserve that hate. For first time in History, much of the world was stable and at relative peace, while simultaneously given opportunities that were similarly unique in history. Namely, the right to vote. The ability to thrive even if they produced no food, as long as they had other goods or services to sell on the global market. International trade before the war was mostly limited to within groups of allies. And even then it was risky bc your enemies could sink your trade ships or steal your goods. The US built a system where it made more sense to follow the rules and join and prosper, as opposed to do your own thing and end up isolated and alone like N Korea. Sanctions. Bretton Woods made the dollar the international currency. We are well positioned for future bc we produce (almost) all we need in house and don't need to protect the world's oceans at great cost. And bc we have a sizable younger generation, unlike most of the West and unlike our rivals who are totally screwed. Also, we control the manufacturing of microprocessors by controlling the machines that make them and controlling their supply chain.

I think we're just in a very bad national emotional state right now thanks to the advent of the internet. We've always been in a position where we could come back, heck, we arent doing so bad now overall. There are issues of course, but its not like we'll collapse soviet style since, thankfully, we dismantled the physical american empire a long time ago. Peoples in the US arent going to suddenly pull apart like eastern europe did in the 90s. Political radicalization is only as strong as we let it be. I think our currently invigorated political climate will ensure no pulling apart at the seams happens.

Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. It's heartening to see our strengths put into words, for once. What I have come to believe is that the resource the United States is most fundamentally lacking is optimism. People, especially on the internet where they don't have to put their faces behind their statements, absolutely love to whine about how the country is doomed. That goes for right-wing culture warriors and left-wing deconstructivists equally. Both are absurdly, unequivocally broken in their worldviews. We have so much going for us and so much to look forward to, a future of immense prosperity, technological progress, and global influence. YES, we have serious problems, but our lack of optimism has made them more, not less, difficult to address. Serious engagement with individual policy problems is accomplished by people who care enough about the country to try to fix it and who put it above whatever ideologically-motivated narrative of doom they choose to believe.

I've been very fortunate, as an American, to live in two foreign countries and visit seven others. What I have learned about my home country is that it cannot be properly defined or pigeonholed. No matter how you view the U.S., it is likely correct. If you view it from an economic standpoint, there's no doubt it is the largest economy in the world with a lot of opportunities. At the same time, there is severe inequality between the rich and poor. If you look at it from a social standpoint, most American citizens want to make a positive impact. On the other hand, many people feel as though the America they grew up with is "being taken away from them." American entertainment can be highly insipid. However, it is also oftentimes cutting-edge. More than anything, I believe the U.S. is a nation of blatant contradictions, social strife, and self-serving politicians. However, it is also a place of undeniable innovation, (relative) freedom, and optimism.

About the cheap food factor: Reminder that under FDR food was so cheap that farmers could not longer make a living competing against each other, causing immense poverty in rural areas to the point where farmers preferred to let their crops rot instead of selling them, in a gambit to bring up the price of food. The Roosevelt administration then had to begin subsidizing farming to both keep food cheap and farmers able to make a living

I actually think that the EU forcing technology to use USB-C is a good idea. Yeah, it may stop some innovation, but it just makes it simpler to charge devices. Plus, the law to force USB-C only applies to any kind of portable technology such as smartphones, tablets, and so on. Things that are constantly plugging in like TV's and desktops don't need USB-C because they're not constantly unplugging and unplugged along with needing more power.

This video was a really wild ride, as a American, white, college-educated person, who became disabled and is now reliant on the existent-but-insufficient American welfare system. Your perspective was eye-opening, especially on the topic of Innovation, because one of the major arcs of my life since graduating college mostly still able-bodied, to needing a wheelchair for grocery trips within 10 years, has been about learning to ACCEPT the status quo. To ALLOW myself to drop out of the rat-race for material wealth, and BECOME complacent and hand off responsibilities to "make something of myself" and even meet my daily needs like house cleaning and food prep. Growing up American with a father who made around 100k per year, and being groomed to expect the same of myself, prepared me very badly for the forced slow-down of disability. I have a guilty conscience every time I hear about other people hustling and making money, because every other person's success is not an inspiration, but a cruel reminder, that our country is not set up to help people like me. It is set up to ignore and impoverish and k*ll people like me. Sure, in any country on earth, being "non-productive" in this capitalist hellscape, would be a negative, but in any other country on earth, my contribution to my family would be more respected, yeah? A man living in his mother's basement is the butt of the joke here, instead of... Just another family member living in a multi-generational household, which he would be in so many other places. TLDR I can't participate in American me-first always-hustle culture, and everything else I can do in life is under-valued here. Maybe it's good for GDP, but it sure wasn't good for my mental health!

Be careful not to sell yourself too short. America is if nothing else the land of second chances and as you said yourself, innovative. Many people are making use of technology to make a lot of money and their side hustles are allowing them to quit their jobs. Also, A LOT of people were forced to move back into their parents homes during COVID and have found that it is beneficial for themselves and their aging parents need them there so it's win/win. Americans can do something better than any other place on Earth: be optimistic. Don't be complacent in your wheelchair, modify that sled with some gnarly off road tires and install seatbelts. American innovation and refusal to be outdone should not be overlooked.

@@jhonklan3794 I’m originally from rural west Texas and moved to San Antonio for university. I’d say the culture of the Protestant work ethic is worse in rural areas than in the cities. It was all about who owns what land and who works it and who is seen as a lazy worker but it’s cheap labor and the middle of nowhere so you can’t do much better, etc. Cities also have better access to social services, hamstrung as they may be in Texas. I think San Antonio was about as good as it gets, relatively laid back culture with cheap housing and good amenities, but I’ve heard the cheap housing has pretty much dried up in all but the most dangerous areas since COVID. I don’t mean that as a diss on Texas, I’m still a proud Texan to this day, but there’s plenty of good reasons I wanted to move my family and raise kids here instead of there. Wanting my kids to be able to afford the bare necessities like housing, healthcare, food, and education is probably the biggest one, and those things aren’t getting any cheaper back in the states. Plus Barcelona has year round perfect weather, great public transit with quiet safe streets for kids to play and grow up in, and basically has a constitutionally guaranteed right to nap time, lol.

One little quirk here. I don't think disposable income actually includes private health and education expenditures. That's more of a discretionary income thing. So most of the stuff that would be covered by National Insurance in Europe - which is a tax that reduced disposable income - would have to be paid out of pocket in the US. Actual "free to spend money" refer to discretionary income, which from what I remember is actually lower in the US compared to the Netherlands. Plus, America is actually more likely to face higher taxes in the future, as their Social Security and Medicare receive funds run out of money as boomers retire. Something that will affect Europe much less, since in many countries they've already switched to at least partial savings-based pensions. As per innovation. America has the deepest and most liquid capital markets in the world that largely developed thanks to a an early-on singe nation-wide securities regulator that covered the entirety of the US market. Innovation needs capital, capital exits in capital markets, the bigger capital markets the better. Europe didn't even have a proper single market till late 90s, not to mention it still doesn't have a properly unified capital market or a banking union. Plus, the US is good at a particular type of innovation. An iPhone may be well designed in the US, but it's aswamebed in China, with components from Germany, manufactured using Dutch machinery. Yes, I am a nerd, what you gonna do about it?

the only reason the the parts are assembled in china and manufactured in Europe is because US companies know it is cheaper to do produce their products abroad. The companies could all, with ease, decide china is no longer as profitable for the company and move to Vietnam, or even back to the States, (This is exactly what is happening for a lot of companies in China). And while the Dutch are particularly important when it comes to semiconductor production and machinery, in the States, all they have to do is throw billions of dollars at it and eventually someone can develop something to match or exceed the manufacturing capabilities of Europe.

Two things about the Turkish population in Germany. First of all Gastarbeiter as a term is only really used to refer to the foreigners coming to Germany in the 60s and 70s to work. It is not generally used to describe Germans with a turkish background. The other part is citizenship. As for Erdogan a huge part is that German law is pretty hard on dual citizenship. So if you can get German citizenship you very often had to rennounce the Turkish one and with that the right to vote in Turkey.

So this means that in Germany, only the people with the most nationalistic tendencies would keep their right to vote in Turkish elections, meaning they would probably be supportive of a regime that seeks to strengthen Turkish national pride. Whereas, a Turkish immigrant to the US could seek citizenship without losing the right to vote in Turkish elections... so that data is not indicative of assimilation AT ALL.

Not quite -- it's a more specific problem: the UK is just not good at retaining, growing, and monetising its many inventions, so they invariably get bought up by larger US competitors (the EU is broadly like this too, but with fewer inventions to worry about going abroad). The UK has many of the world's top research universities (more than any country outside of the US), and has produced many of the most significant tech inventions of the past century. To go no further than Cambridge alone: the splitting of the atom, the invention of the jet engine, the discovery of DNA, Turing's development of computer science as a field of study, and Upton's creation of ARM (one might mention Sir Tim Berners-Lee's invention of the World Wide Web, but he was from Oxford). All of these have ended up on the American side of the pond, along with a host of related inventors and designers like Martin Fowler and Jony Ive. Rather than trying to create a sovereign wealth fund or other means of capitalising domestic inventions, the UK has complacently accepted its role as a kind of 'ideas & invention hub', which profits by selling its fledgling ideas and start-ups to the US or China. BritMonkey's mention of the stalled Oxford-Cambridge Tech Corridor is exactly the kind of project that could still elevate the UK to the next level -- and would certainly have gotten the go-ahead and necessary funding if it were in the US. It's a shame this may not even happen.

13:50 the reason Americans “make more money” is partially due to where the finances are handled in checkbook balancing. Healthcare, education, transportation, and housing are all handled after taxes, unlike other countries which roll education into taxes to be paid back later, have universal healthcare, aren’t as car dependent, and such. Also, it sucks if it’s dependent on foreign exploitation, such as how many American companies like Nike, Nestle, and Unilever use exploitative foreign labor to produce cheap textiles, food, and other products.

I just want to add a small amount of clarity on the “earn up to $18.87 per hour” at a quick trip example used in the video when discussing job economics. The posters advertising that people can make “up to” a certain amount of money,, mostly more than average state level minimum wage,, uses a very intentional phrase. “Up to” normally insists that if you start,, you’ll eventually work up to a position over the course of months to years that’ll earn you that much. When you first start, and usually for the first 6 months until typical promotions are set up, you’ll be earning minimum wage. Those posters could technically qualify as false advertising, even more so when some jobs don’t even phrase the “up to” portion.

The points you gave are part of the "america sucks" propaganda that has been pushed for many years, as an attempt from foreign governments to slow down the rate of losing their best minds to the US. I say this as a European myself (who emmigrated to the US). Allow me to refute your points: 1) If you actually look at the statistics (and not the fear mongering news) the odds of dying via gunshot (including self inflicted) in the United States in your entire average lifespan of 77 years is 0.01% - significantly higher if you're in a gang, and significantly lower if you are not (and 99.9% of Americans are not). So to be scared of being shot by a gun is being scared of something that has less than a 0.01% chance of happening to you. 2) 92% of Americans have health insurance. Some states like Massachusetts offer healthcare to everyone. If you're smart enough as an American to find a job in Japan, you'd probably be one of the 92%. It became a meme online to showcase the hospital bill before the insurance deductibles, but realistically the final bill is close to zero. American healthcare is also superior due to how quickly doctors will see you - in fact many people from abroad fly to America for quick treatment, and are happy to pay out of pocket. 3) Better to drive your big, air conditioned car to work, than to have your face in someone else's armpit on the subway on a hot, humid summer's day. When a city like Dubai is car-centric - it's seen as luxurious. When America is car centric, suddenly it's unclassy. This is how deeply ingrained the anti-america propaganda is. And just so you know, plenty of Japanese people have cars. But places like Tokyo have trains, much like NYC, because that's just what you do when your population density is so high. Japan is nice when you're an expat, because you get to float above the cultural issues that Japanese people face. But in Japan, suicide is the leading cause of death in men between the ages of 20-44 and women between the ages of 15-34, because the societal expectations are so strict.

"OMG this guy can make $18/hr as a 16 year old!" Dude I'm 21, working for $16/hr. Everywhere I applied to was $15-17/hr. Sounds nice right? Well no, I live in a city where a 1-bedroom/1bathroom apartment costs >$1800/mo, usually $2000+/mo. If I worked full-time (40 hours a week), I'd have $2560/mo before taxes. Yes, I don't have much to pay making so little, but that leaves AT MOST $760/mo for ALL my other expenses, from food to gas to health insurance premiums to car-related expenses. Not to mention, I pay for medication, so even with my state's public option healthcare, I still need to pay for things out of pocket. I'm a young woman, I can't imagine what it's like to be old in this country. Not to mention, even if ALL this was resolved, you run into the issue of so much of the country being suburban development, which is a mode of development that can't pay for itself. Suburbs need to densify, or rot; just look at so many rust-belt cities and suburbs the second they couldn't keep expanding economically or physically. The only thing this video got right is that US geography is good, and that the US has lots of culture. The geography IS very good, which makes it all the more unfortunate that things are in the state they are. I'm no America-hater. Britmonkey, as the average enjoyer of your channel, I really have to say your data is incredibly cherry-picked. It's quite idiotic or deceitful imo to use net income instead of bruto income and your use of mean wealth as opposed to median wealth. It's exactly the taxed income which is spent on our free healthcare which Americans are forced to spend out of their own pocket for much higher prices. Median wealth is a lot lower due to exactly that inequality, which hampers economic growth. America on top as "A society that strives for equality" is quite the bold statement when the EU has protections for minorities, much better gay and gender rights protections enshrined in the constitution while the US filibusters attempts to ratify the ERA.

America certainly has it in it to become a utopia, but it depends on how you define utopia whether it ever will. It will never be profitable to eliminate poverty and starvation, because people will always have to eat and will always need somewhere to live. Without the threat of losing those things, people are going to demand much more for their work. While eliminating the need for people to work shitty jobs through the use of AI and robotics is absolutely a worthwhile goal to strive towards, it is only a good thing if the tens of millions of people suddenly out of a job no longer need paid work in order to live fulfilling lives.

My family all have their own career's, sperate from their job and we all have left our workplace for a new one since we value the labor we sell to others. You probably don't understand how money spends. I don't mean this rudely, but you should probably learn economics. A billionaire's money doesn't just sit under their mattress. It's out there being spent, and earning money, and paying for wages, and moving around, over and over and over again. If a person was becoming a billionaire b/c they lived in a country where it was only the friends of the country's leader (say, Russia) that were billionaires - that would obviously be a problem. But if people were using their own genius to make money, it means, all the trickle down effects of technology, capitol, job-creation, etc - were all shared around in that country. As JFK said: A rising tide lifts all boats.

I was saying that most billionaires isn't necessarily a good thing due to wealth inequality. Does billionaires doing this with their money suddenly mean that there isn't wealth inequality with said billionaires being significantly wealthier than most people? Or are you saying that it is necessarily a good thing. Because I was saying that it's not necessarily a good thing. Not that it can't be a good thing. "But if people were using their own genius to make money, it means, all the trickle down effects of technology, capitol, job-creation, etc - were all shared around in that country." @@robertschwalb4469 Amazon employs 1.1M people in the US alone - and there have only been a small amount (typically in places like NYC) that have wanted to unionize. And then there's the ancillary products that Amazon produces, like AWS which employ people in AWS data centers around the world. Cloud computing is lifting thousands of people all over the world out of poverty - and that's just one facet of the operation. Tens of thousands of businesses use AWS, meaning thousands upon thousands of people are getting good, or even FANTASTIC jobs in information technology and they don't even work for Amazon. Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk - they were all slave drivers, but they also built businesses that helped move the world forward in unimaginable ways. One can easy argue that the world wouldn't be the same, and would be far worse off, if the likes of Gates, Jobs, Musk, or Besos weren't around. As a Turkish person living in Turkey, I can confirm that this is completely true. Turks living in Germany have much closer roots than other counterparts because of the post-World War II days when Germany lost the war and needed to replace the men they lost. They chose Turkey and accepted lots of Turkish men for labor working in areas such as mining and infrastructure. We call this event "Almanya-Türkiye İşgücü Antlaşması," which occurred on October 30, 1961. These people went, but the German culture and Turkish culture are quite different. These immigrant workers always came from rural areas of Turkey, which are much more conservative about the country and what they believe. The distance between Turkey and the USA is almost 24 hours by flight, while on the other hand, the flight between Germany and Turkey is only 2 or 3 hours, making it much easier for people to come and live in Germany. Nevertheless, the USA does not have any Turkish living immigrant culture, but Germany has its own community that we call "gurbetçi."

Might that be because Turks in America are diluted in the general population, while in Germany then form enclaves that are detached from the rest of the country? Germany has at least twice as many Turks, while being four times smaller in population. Also, who are the Turks immigration to America vs those immigrating to Germany? I would bet that Turkish immigrants to the US are disproportionately well-educated, while the Gastarbeiter in Germany were overwhelmingly physical workers.

As a turkish-german that is more so well educated, I do have to say that most of it is man made. There where invisible Glass ceilings (namely socio-economic) applied to make it as hard as possible for these people to integrate, suceed and develop well. It's a hard pill to swallow, and any other german that has something against Turkish-Germans will vehemently deny it. Poor, uneducated and perspectiveless people will get frustrated and eventually act out. And over generations, these result in poor behaviour. Given that most of the people came from rural areas and had poor education to begin with, it was "easy" to keep them at the lower end of the socio economic ladder for so long. There are exceptions though. But if you have money, you leave Germany.

This video mentions the "American Dream" and how poor Americans see themselves as "Temporary fiscally embarrassed millionaires", and it throws a few shady statistics how the average American will be "a millionaire" for at least "a year of their life😂😂". This "dream" is not American, every person who has not committed suicide to depression has it. Question is, what Country provides the best opportunity.. And I am not talking about Cambridge, Shenzen, Hamburg or Kyoto University students who scored on the top 0.01%. But for the average dude. We actually have good data on this, and it is something that can be calculated fairly accurately. It's called a Social Mobility Score. Countries that score high on it, are the ones where its easiest to improve your life with hard work. And yes USA scores quite high at 70.4, but even UK who was was one of the worst for social mobility in EU, has a higher score of 74.4.
