Natural beauty gives me the most joy about being in America and being American. In my experience, there seems to be a disconnect or a hypocrisy with being black and patriotic, but in watching this and many Vlogbrothers Thoughts From vids, it reminds my of what Maya Angelo said, "We are more alike, my friend, then we are unalike."

To me, that is patriotism. It is not blindly following the ideals of your country. True patriotism is acknowledging the good and the bad in your country, loving it for all the good it fosters, and wanting to improve the bad to make your country the best possible place.

Its easy to be an American when you see the beauty that inhabits this country. And yes, its hard to be an American when we see the bare-knuckled fight which passes for our electoral process. But, sometimes, fighting is the right thing to do. You want parks? You are going to have to fight for them. You want clean air? You are going to have to fight for that too. You want education, science, art, a chance for yourself and a chance for the other guy who could use a chance? You are going to have to fight for it. Fight with intention. Fight honestly. Fight mercifully. Fight till your heart bursts. Then, fight for someone else. Fight for the kind of America you want to leave your children (Hank).

It's been decades since I was last at Glacier National Park. Back then it was okay to take R.V.s up Going to the Sun Road, which we did, in a 30' Bounder. If you thought it was scary in a car you have no clue how scary it can be. But the trip there and the beauty of all the natural wildflowers, and getting to see the enormous glaciers (at least they were back in the late 1980's and early 1990's) was amazing, in the true sense of the word. As a kid it was hard to really appreciate it but as an adult I look back on those memories and think, I was able to see something beautiful that will soon be gone from this world.

This is a great video and I really agree with what you've said here. It's kind of strange for me because a similar happened when I went on vacation earlier this year. I went to Yellowstone National Park and went through Beartooth Mountains, which is similar in that it has a road which goes on top of the mountains and has amazing views, although it's a fully connected road. This area is beautiful but also has very little cell phone service, and when I was able to use my phone, I saw about Christina Grimmie and the Pulse shooting. Although it's nice to turn off your phone every so often and enjoy the natural beauty of America and what we've accomplished, it's also frustrating that in those few days, awful things seem to happen.

As a non-American, it's great to see this kind of mentality: nationalism with a sense of humility. Sure, be proud of your community, especially if it motivates you to improve it, however please don't stop acknowledging its problems and don't resort to ambiguous claims such as being "the best" or saying your country was once "the greatest" (how would you even objectively measure such things)? In recent years American exceptionalism seems to be on the rise amongst prominent politicians of both major parties and to be honest I don't see a good reason why. Say you're part of a classroom of 22 students. Would it be normal for you to get the best grades in all courses? Of course not, it'd already be awesome if you're "the best" at one course and I would be pretty happy with some second or third places too. I know these are simply words, but the reason I think this is worth ranting about is because it can be truly frustrating to see world leaders go unquestioned when they effectively call others inferior without rational argument. Should those people really represent a country in international affairs? Anyway, I'll stop that rant there. What I'm just trying to get to is this: nationalism/patriotism is fine and can be very useful to a society (as well as just make individuals happy), even if there's no rational reason behind those feelings, yet a dangerous attitude of superiority often looms. In times where the most extreme voices are usually the ones being broadcast, it's relieving to listen to a more humble person telling their story. Thanks for this video Hank. P.S.: I quite like North-American nature and how well it's been preserved in a lot of places in the US and Canada, so you're definitely also getting a thumbs-up for that. :P
@ScarletImp8 жыл бұрын
That's how I've always seen it, +Wout12345. You can be proud of your country's accomplishments while keeping in mind that it had done PLENTY of nasty things. And my country (America) has done plenty of nasty things. It's a feeling that has to be cautioned because, as demonstrated time after time again, it's very easy to get OVERLY nationalistic and ruin everyone else's day. And that would be NOT awesome.

One of the great benefits of government public spending is outcomes like this Road or the Hoover Dam or the Great Ocean Road in Australia. These great works would not have been built without Government support. Although there are bad examples as well, like the Japanese Bridge to no-where or the Chinese Empty City, it is worth remembering that the Government can get it right sometimes
@rjfaber19918 жыл бұрын
To be honest, it all completely depends on the kind of research done before development starts. Companies could do just as good a job of infrastructure as governments if they hired the same people to research demand, but companies don't have the funds or the mandate to create infrastructure on anything like as large a scale, resulting in a lot of incompatible systems. We tried leaving companies to create infrastructure during the Industrial Revolution, and frankly, it was a bit of a disaster by modern standards...
@99thTuesday8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Faber Well exactly. Governments can be more ambitious and flexible with scale and time-frames and they can push for non-financial outcomes with much greater ease than say Joint stock companies which have to respond to the economic demands of their shareholders.
@rjfaber19918 жыл бұрын
99thTuesday Absolutely. Having said that, it does also carry downsides. Government projects are infamous for going wildly over budget, to an extent that simply never happens in the private sector...

America by Claude McKay Although she feeds me bread of bitterness, And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth, Stealing my breath of life, I will confess I love this cultured hell that tests my youth. Her vigor flows like tides into my blood, Giving me strength erect against her hate, Her bigness sweeps my being like a flood. Yet, as a rebel fronts a king in state, I stand within her walls with not a shred Of terror, malice, not a word of jeer. Darkly I gaze into the days ahead, And see her might and granite wonders there, Beneath the touch of Time’s unerring hand, Like priceless treasures sinking in the sand.

I mean, I come from a country that's in the top 3 when it comes to highest standard of living in the world, healthcare and education are considered basic human rights, we're very eco friendly and we descend from the vikings lol but we don't go around saying 'I'm so proud of my country bla bla bla national romanticism' even though we technically have so much reason to, I think it's cause we have humility and know there is always room for improvement, a mindset the US seems to lack. I'd never say I'm proud to be a dane but I certainly would say I'm happy I'm not american
@rjfaber19918 жыл бұрын
Yeah, we Dutch don't generally do that either, though maybe still somewhat more than you Danes. :p I think it's just the Germanic mentality of verbal modesty that the US very severely lacks, as it comes from a more Anglo-Romance tradition. Still, the US really has turned patriotism up to eleven, and to an extent that frankly makes me (and you as well, I assume) sick...
@neonjoe5298 жыл бұрын
If you listen to Hank's monologue again, you'll notice that he mentions that we (Americans) spend a lot of time discussing the problems we have. We know there's room for improvement. Yet - you're right - many Americans share a sense of nationalism.... we're proud of the country we live in. I certainly can't speak for everyone, but part of my own nationalism comes from the principles this country was founded on: freedom of religion, freedom of speech, etc. Another part - and this might not be true for every part of the country, but *is* true here in the midwest - is work ethic. People here generally work very hard, and try to do their best (with family as well as our careers). These things, of course, are not unique to America; doesn't change my sense of pride in my country, though. Apologies if this makes you sick.... Postscript, for +Robert faber : If you visited the Midwest, I think you'd find that we're more modest than your impression of us suggests...
@rjfaber19918 жыл бұрын
neonjoe529 I think it's very difficult to say something meaningful about the US without going into atrocious levels of generalisation, which I'll admit I did indeed do. For the most part, I don't think I'd be able to live two weeks in the US before I'd completely lost my sanity, but in places like New England, I imagine I'd last a lot longer, and I'm entirely willing to believe that the Midwestern US is a more sensible place than the national average as well.

great video. I felt the same way this summer on our National park roadtrip. We hit the Painted desert/Petrified Forest, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Grand Tetons, & Yellowstone. I couldn't get over how we made these beautiful lands accessible and the craftsmanship that went into the tunnels, boardwalks & overlooks in dangerous places, etc. wish we would do more of that. create more opportunity for beauty rather than... well, the alternative.

I am currently in Glacier National Park and came back to watch this video in my hotel room. It is amazing being surrounded by all this beauty. True, you can't Snapchat or immediately post what you see, but it gives you time to take it in. We picnicked today at a place that was by a lake that was surrounded by mountains. There were stones we could skip and wonderful beauty to behold and no cell service. But it was amazing. And I just sat there are watched the water until I was told it was time to go. I was so in awe with the beauty that I didn't even take a picture on my phone because I didn't want to leave the view.

+Dylan Drees They might just come from a nation that isn't very emotional. I MIGHT be detecting a hint of Germanic/Nordic austerity and snobbishness. There's plenty that we can learn from those nations. But they need to realize that not every aspect of there social norms and customs of behavior is necessarily right. Those countries have always had the attitude that they are better than everyone else, and it has caused the world a lot of pain. We should stop with our nationalism and American exceptionalism, but there is nothing wrong with a little patriotism.

It was the last of a three-park road trip (Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier) and had exactly the same sense of reverence for America. I live abroad most of the time, and I actually came all the way across the world just to take a few weeks to tour the parks, and then left the day after. This, my man. We can't just list people off as "They're evil, get rid of 'em." We need to look at both sides, and ignore the made up controversies that have been distorted to spin a narrative by both sides. But I do the same thing for Hillary, and while I shouldn't, having a definitive Good and Bad side makes this situation easier on all voters, when it is far more complex. I shouldn't play off Hillary as a terrible person, but I do anyways, and I can't really do much about it, but I am trying to instead talk about the good things about Trump rather than the bad things about Hillary, otherwise I'd risk looking like an ass. Honestly, I wish I wasn't political, but dammit, I love my guns, and everyone I know who is as enthusiastic about guns as I am are the safest and most responsible owners around, and the fear of them being taken, or even just made more difficult to use than they already are just boiled my blood towards supporting Trump, a man I barely cared about 5 years ago.
@chasbodaniels17448 жыл бұрын
Many of us ARE listening to Trump's supporters' grievances, but The Donald is not equipped to resolve them! He talks his huge ideas, but lacks the political and temperamental skills to implement them. Congress can't get out of its' own way to be of any help. (I dislike DT and do not support him.)
@SCIFIguy648 жыл бұрын
Chasbo Daniels See, that's the reason we want Trump. None of us actually want a border wall, or any of that (although we won't say no), because we know Don is too far over his head. We know he won't do anything, and neither will congress. We don't want change. Many of us think we live in a decent state as of now. Sure, things seem like shit, and they are shit, but we'd rather stay in the sewage with it just up to our ankles. If we elect Hillary, it's far more likely that the shit will climb to our necks far more than it is for us to swim out of it. We want to keep our guns, and stay exactly where we are. We won't create many jobs, no, but we won't lose any, and that's better than becoming like some European meta country like Spain or Belgium, nations that can't function on their own, and are barely managing with EU support. If the EU wasn't soft, maybe France and Germany can split the difference that is the blight of Europe, Belgium.

We shouldn't demonize each other!" Is it just me or has Hank lost the ability to make a solely uplifting and fun video? They are all just full of political rhetoric and negativity. Even ones where he starts off super positive usually spiral into some political or social commentary. For someone who used to be all about bringing happiness and fun to the internet, Hank's gotten super negative. He used to be all about reducing the amount of negativity in the world, now he seems to incite it in the community. Vlog Brothers used to be the place I'd go to ESCAPE all the negativity. Looks like it's permeated here too. My last bastion of fun, tainted. The stuff he talks about is important. No denying that. I just kind of wish they would make a separate channel for that kind of stuff rather than do it here. :-(
