We lost the extra 'u' from many words because it was cheaper to set type for fewer letters. Way back when in the days when broadsheets were how much of the news got printed. Many of the oddly spelled words we still keep are Native American of some sort or other. Anyone who lives in Texas can't really throw weird spelling or pronunciation stones at anyone. I think, half the time, we make it up and repeat it enough we remember, then everyone else is just too polite to say anything about it. Or does anyone else have a better idea of how Kuykendahl Road got named? (kER-ken-dAHl 🙄) I'm an Aggie, and everyone knows if you do something twice, it's a TRADITION and must be done from then on. At least, that's my theory of Kuykendahl Road.
