I'm a Filipino and I just hope the Filipina explained why we pronounce English words the same as the Americans. We were colonized by the Americans too, so it's somewhat engraved in our minds. Also, she should've explained that we have "Filipinized" pronunciation and spelling for English words. For "Computer", in Filipino spelling it would be "Kompyuter" and the letter R would be stronger than the American R. It would've been a fun fact for them :)

I know your intentions are good and may doesn't want to sound obnoxious but it MAY ruin the wholesome mood of the conversations. From the title itself, I bet you already have an idea of what the topic would be. There is a right place and moment where you can explain that kind of topic and this is not one of them. I watched a lot of American reality shows when I was a teenager. I often imitated how the people spoke (often adults older than me) from TV shows. So I ended up speaking in a lower voice when I speak English.

I'm Indonesian and there are some slang words for "friends" or "close friends" like, "sobat" which got shortened of "sahabat" as both has the same meaning as "best friend" or "buddy". "Sob" too, shortened form of "sobat" or "bos" but spelled from backwards, as bos also stands for "boss" in english. The rest are similar with how American call them with "Bro", "bud", and "buddy". 👍

i think indonesian people has the most flexible tongue so that is why we dont have really strong english accent , its more like we could easily imitate british or american accent. The tone between each person here varies so much. Indonesia has many local language, which is their second language. I lived in another country on another continent for 9 years and always found that understanding and friendship always follows trying to learn each other's language. ... Language appropriation is interesting because languages and dialects are usually more connected than most people probably believe. English includes words from many languages, but mainly from German and Latin because the Latin-speaking Romans colonized northern Europe 2,000 years ago. The Filipino languages, Tagalog and Cebuano/Bisayan, incorporate Sanskrit, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, and English (American) as well as other languages because their islands were colonized and or dominated by those speakers during at least the last 2,000 years, if not longer. Interestingly, Sanskrit and English are both Indo-European languages. ... And just as English was formed because of the actions of their colonizers, the people colonized by English speakers were, in turn, required to learn English, often to the harm of their own languages. However, all languages, including English, incorporate foreign words through trade and other social causes, including intermarriage. Languages are not static but change on their own every year as the speakers change. For the Philippines side. We actually use American english but we do have a Filipino English version. Filipino who have been abroad or who works abroad usually use the American version. Difference is, well american english is what it is. Filipino English have more pronounced R. V and B are interchangeable, F and P as well. 'Th' in words like The, That, This, These is pronounced with a hard D, so it's Da, Dat, Dis, Dis (This and These are pronounced the same). T is a hard T while american english have a ts or d sound and each vowel is pronounced with emphasis. Let's use Aircon for example, for Filipino English it's Erkon. Other than that, we have words that have changed meaning like the word "commute", in the Philippines it means riding public transport while in american english it means to travel. Again, outside of the Philippines, it's most common to hear filipinos use american english rather than filipino english.

When I was working abroad - upon knowing my name, a European man ask me to say "five, forty five and forty two" just to confirm that I really am a Filipino. "No, you're not a Filipino" he said after hearing me saying fayv, forty fayv and forty too, then ask me again another to say such as 22 and 25. He's waiting me to say twentitu and twentipayb. Still not satisfied, he added some numbers just for me to be not prepared for the upcoming 4 & 5.

My former teacher told us that climate are also a factor on how words are pronounced or the speech are delivered. Like for example in countries situated in cold places, the words are often pronounced without opening the mouth too wide, it is because in cold areas they are conserving the heat in their bodies. Unlike in countries which are tropical the words used often are expelling air

It's just in the slang. In America, they speak very different from one state to the next, but still be speaking the same language. It's so weird. Like my husband is someone they call "country," Instead of saying, like Yellow with Oh at the end, he says Yell-er. Over there is over younder. Ice sounds like he's saying ass. I have to work so hard with him when we are home in the Philippinas to slow down and pronounce correctly.

actually in Indonesia students in schools or courses are given UK English by their teachers. for some reason, in the last 10-15 years, Indonesians have become more proficient in using US English than UK English. I think that's because the British English accent is more difficult to learn, because when speaking the tongue feels deeper than US English which is flatter.

Friend, when translated to the Philippine's local language, depending on the province, region or dialect can very much differ. The common Tagalog words for it in the Metro, -Manila area are as follows: kaibigan(friend), ka-tropa(co-friend) came from the English word "troop" which translates to a group of, or a member of a group of friends, pare/'pre(co-godfather)kumpare; mare(co-godmother)kumare is also loosely used as a term for friend, 'tol/'utol(brother/sister) which is also loosely or commonly used as a term for friend. 'Utol comes from the word ka-putol(one who shares(BEARER) the other HALF of the umbilical cord. Other terms: Waray, -indoy(male)/inday(female) Ilonggo, -part Cebuana and other Visayan dialects, -bai(male) & 'dai/'day/inday(female) Generally for every Filipino and Filipina we call each other as ka-bayan/kabayan. Especially or particularly when we're abroad. It's a general jargon that's used for every Pinoy/Pinay(slang) because we come from diverse regions or have different dialects. Ka-bayan literally means, fellow countryman or someone who hails from the same motherland. P.S. The Thailander's physical features and the Indonesian's could pass as Filipinas... ☺️

Those aren't wrong in speaking about younger girls/boys or girls as daughters or young girlfriends as terms of endearment. It's just not what I consider general usage. We only have 384 different dialogues from Visayas to Mindanao.... It makes teaching difficult sometimes.
