"I don't want to be motivated by money." GIRL! That's the story of my life, and sometimes it just makes me feel so out of place in this world. Things I value more than money: time, peace, comfort, love, laughter, my privacy, hugs, kisses, naps, skin-to-skin contact, nature, authentic connections, good sex coupled with mutual chemistry, books, a sound mind, music, writing, sitting in the sun, the calmness of the rain, home cooked meals, an occasional blunt, moments of solitude, undisturbed time with my children, petting my dog, visiting botanical gardens, days with no experiences of racism, eye contact, conversations without phones...I could go on and on. For some reason, my perception of money and success changed drastically around the age of 27. I don't care for the idea of either, but it is impossible to distance ourselves from it while being a part of American society.

A lot of people today use the word "hustle". You made me think of this when you said "whip". They say hustle means to work hard. That is NOT the original meaning of this word. You look it up now and it says it means to work hard. I have an old dictionary from the 70s and it does not say Hustle=Work Hard. it means: to force, push roughly, shove, bulldoze, rush, pester, badger, pressurize, manhandle, compel, coerce.... you will also see these definitions if you look it up. Hustle Culture: a term used regularly these past few years to say a person needs multiple jobs/side hustles. More than 1 job, is now pushed as the norm or else you're just not doing enough to "make it". Work, all day, all night. never rest.... like you are in a pressure cooker. Not a positive word at all... but we repeat and use these terms. Yes, if a person needs that 2nd job, ok.. but we should not push that everyone needs to have a "side hustle". I feel like you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned if we were not forced into this structure, we would be putting much more time into the things we care about. Perhaps this is exactly why we saw so many protests during the pandemic. Large amount of people are constantly fed up with the status quo - and finally had a forced time-out from this survival mode 'treadmill' to speak to this truth. And I instantly think of how much trouble this causes for the few who benefit from working people's suffering: They need us desperate to make the potential negative factors of dissent out-weight the benefits, and they need us distracted enough to avoid our making change before they can adapt. There are a huge selection of people who are taking old cars and vans and turning them into livable spaces and building tiny homes from scratch. More and more people are wanting to learn how to garden and be more self sufficient, but they just don't have the money or the freedom to do so. Human beings are the most creative, innovative, and gifted of all the species. To say that many people lack the want or capacity to be self sufficient is a huge and unfortunate generalization. We invented and built cars and airplanes, cured deadly diseases, put a man on the moon and created the internet. WE ARE THE INFUSTRUCTURE. Although I don't believe in this greedy capitalist system, I do believe in the people to overcome it. Maybe it's just me, but I believe human beings are capable of a lot more than you realize.

My bf working for a company for 30 years and new employees making more than him. When he was out sick no one could do his job. Work was left for him when he returned. Still no raise even after asking. He is 62 so that may be an factor 😢 Ageism?

"Everything doesn't need to be always on." 100%...I love this video on so many levels. We're living with a very antiquated and narrow-minded mentality. Americans are addicted to acquiring more "stuff." Businesses are addicted to more growth. As long as we worship people with this mentality, things won't change. And with the consolidation of corporations and inept lawmakers on Capitol Hill, it's getting worse. The power dynamic is insane. But it is great to know other people share the views you express. I hope that eventually more people evolve to have your mindset, so we can really change.

The way to convince a person to remain a slave is to convince them that they are free. Alecia your mind and your words are inspiring, comforting (to hear someone express such issues so deliberately) and thought-provoking.

Thank you for making this! Thank you for voicing frustration too. I get so sad and tired when I am trying to imagine a better world and trying to have conversations about the end of capitalism and what will take shape after, try to think of ways that we could have everyone fed and housed and nourished and nurtured and I get met with questions like ‘you really think that’s reasonable?’ Or ‘that sounds nice but people are too greedy for that to work’ or ‘that just can’t work bc that’s not how people are, people are selfish’. When that doesn’t have to be true!! It’s not always true, people are generous and helpful with each other all the time. We are currently technically working together, just in the most violent, exploitative, awful way possible. And it’s benefiting the smallest number of people compared to those it’s tearing apart. Things don’t work well now!! Things work in the absolute worst way possible, and we’re here. So why is it so crazy to think of how we could be better? It’s already so hard to imagine, bc of the loop of fear and exhaustion/fight or flight we’re kept in. The more we justify these injustices with fucked up logic like ‘this is how it is’ the more we let ourselves get taken advantage of, and worse take advantage of others. It’s not crazy to want what’s best for everyone, and it’s not impossible to end hunger and state sanctioned violence.

Hermana, you can see clearly through the Matrix. I am in awe of what your generation is putting out into the world to till this old, tired landscape and create fresh new soil ripe for fresh ideas, thoughts, dreams, action...a new way to live. Please keep doing what you do, your work is just in time for this season of humanity we are all living. Peace.

Make it make sense if the workers are bone tired and you trust them less than the customers... its gonna fail. I had a manager check the cameras on us for literal hours at a time. She'd literally zoom in a treaten job loss hours at a time too. I sucked at that job😂 but that stress was horrible !! Society is failing us. Thank you for this video. I'm also an artist and the world is so inhumane these days. You're so right shame is hindering us from sucess. I'd love to go froliking right now. 🧚🏼♀️🦔🐿🐦🦋🐛🌱🧚🏼♀️🦔🐿🐦🦋🐛🌱 I have to work in this society 😢. I praying for a better world.

Exactly. Best video I have seen in a long time. You have asked the same questions I had in the past. I am not money motivated either. I want to breathe fresh air and have deeper relationships that involve coming up with solutions. Everything and everyone seems to involve turmoil. Their fear makes everything seem superficial and drawn out. I realize while watching this I personally have not been dealing with fear, but dread. I've truly been in "enough of this poop" mode for over ten years now.

I want you to know that God has great things in store for you. Blessings are on the horizon and love is on its way. You won’t recognize your life in a couple of years. I pray that God ensures you are guided home by the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ. That there are people you don’t know cursing you, it has gone in for too long. It will take some time but they will not be able to take anything else from you again. God bless you. God bless your life and your family. Praise God for doing the best you can to create a safe space for black women suffering from anxiety, depression, etc… God sees your efforts. You will be blessed. Believe it. You are God’s child, they shouldn’t have attached anything to you. You life belongs to God. Blessing & Peace

Everyday is fml I feel stuck didn't make the best choices so things are 10 times harder, but I own my choices. I also know trauma and falling for the many deceptions that were fed to us played a big part. I have a disable child omg I love my kid but being a caregiver instead of being a parent is miserable. Just trying to get basics is such a struggle everyday it gets harder to want to live. I understand how your mom feels dying leaving her child behind I have 2 older kids screwed up with them, but I get sad thinking when I'm no longer here leaving my kids behind especially my youngest she can't care for herself. Everything is just f up all of life is smh.

I couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said. I think I would work as hard as I do now just because - for me - I enjoy what I do snd helping others with my skills. I would 💯 be that volunteer person for all the things if I didn’t need money to survive. That’s the difference, I think. I would work differently, with different purpose - aligned to my values and beliefs instead of the capitalist hellscape we live in. Mind you, so much of my volunteer work is unnecessary if this reality changes. It would be interesting to explore what I could do differently if that happened. I love the vision of peace you describe. I felt so much to that as a mom of a neurodivergent kid. We NEED this world to change. It will benefit every last person on the planet.
