Just a little note for anyone interested. The ship seen at 15:26 with the "proportional" text over it is not some generac "insert war footage" It is actually Sahand after we got done dropping heat on it.. It got hit with two Harpoon missiles, four AGM-123's, apair of Rockeye cluster bombs, and then a single Harpoon from the destroyer USS Joseph Strauss to finish it off.

The tanker escort mission was called Operation Earnest Will. When we would enter or leave the gulf through the Straits of Hormuz, Iran would light us up with their Silkworm missile radars. I was an Electronics Warfare Technician 2nd Class on the USS Merrill (DD-976), SAG B, during this engagement. The night before, our Captain told us to gfet some sleep. We were going to general quarters at 0730. At 0800 our SAG would destroy the Sassan Oil Platform, SAG C would take out the Sirri oil platform, and SAG D would take our a frigate. We went to GQ at 0730. We radioed the platform at 0745, stasting "You have 15 minutes to evacuate the platform." then stated it in Farsi, then English, then Farsi, finally saying, "Have A Nice Day." (we had a CT onboard that spoke Farsi) We then gave them a 10 minute warning, then a 5-minute warning. At 0800 we radioed, "Has everyong left the platform, we are prepared to open fire," to which the platform responded, "We are not leaving." So, we were like, "OK" and started firing at the platform with our 5-inch guns. We had fired 2 rounds when they started shooting back with their 22-mm chain gun. Our Fire Controlman adjusted fire and took him out with ONE shot (yes, he was THAT good). Then he readjusted fire and continued with the anti-personnel air bursts (we were trying NOT to hit a toxic tank on the platform. We were supposed to trade off with the Lynde B. McCormick but her gun had dropped sync and was "walking" and they couldn't fix it in time. We wound up doing all the shooting on the Sassan oil platform. The Soviet Udaloy destroyer was collecting intel. We were steaming next to her for a couple of days. I had to do a weapons and radar fit on her. We knew they were there. We had a joke after the engagement: How does the Ayatollah inspect his fleet?... Glass Bottom Boat. A few details wrong, but it doesn't detract from the story and NO ONE gets ALL the details right. It all depending on who you are talking to. I love Nic's presentation. I've seen most of his videos and they are awesome.

What absolutely blows my mind is how quickly they were able to fix the Roberts. Even smaller ships like that are absolutely MASSIVE, and not only did they replace the damaged hull but they even replaced the entire engine block (and you can imagine just how much detail has to go into that, not just for the engine itself but everything necessary for it to work properly). And it's not like we're talking LEGOs here - slotting in a new section of a ship requires an absurd amount of precision so that everything works properly (including preventing underwater drag). That they were able to do this in the span of one year absolutely blows my mind.

Great reaction to one of the best storytellers on YT! Nic/The Fat Electrician puts out some of the absolute best videos of relatively unknown history, usually focused on military history, and his delivery and enthusiasm makes twenty minutes seem like only two. I've watched his entire library of YT videos and there's not a dud in the bunch. Even his rants, or as he calls them his Unhinged TED Talks, are brilliant. He did one rant over the fact that his wife bought single ply toilet paper (which all people should despise) and it ended up being a very interesting history about toilet paper and general bathroom cleanliness methods through history that I both learned so much from and laughed so hard at. A friend of mine's older brother was serving on the Enterprise during Operation Praying Mantis and told us some stories about it. As I recall the Operation itself was downplayed, barely getting much of a mention in news though I heard that the Samuel B Roberts had been badly damaged in the Gulf. Of course, at this time I was 20 and in college so much of my attention was focused on -girls- my studies -really, girls- so I wasn't watching the news much. It did make the news though. The part that was truly swept under the rug was the whole Silkworm attacks bit, because that would have had what we call extreme repercussions. Also, though not mentioned here but from what was known by the naval crews on site, the "proportions" included the destruction of Kuwaiti oil tankers on the scales, as well as reducing/eliminating the ability of Iran's navy to destroy other tankers/shipping with naval vessels or any more minefields that they might (illegally) spread through international waters. So the proportions were fairly balanced with all that added in. Even if you don't react, go watch TFE's videos, just for the sheer amazement of learning about the stories of insane heroism that we were never taught in school as well as other entertaining stories.

He's the best at the "military instructor speech style". My favorites are the 1911, Infantry, Airborne, Ranger School, F-15 Eagle and the A-10 vids, but all are great to view.

He tells a great story - there are tons of follow-on stories to the many details that surround this whole thing.

@@TheRealMrAndrew What in the world is that supposed to mean? I'm serious, that's a question. Saying that someone should be embarrassed to be from any particular region of the world, how do you parse that? You're either a bot, a plant, or lost.

@@liquidpza wrong on all three counts. You know how shoplifters should be embarrassed? Same thing. Has nothing to do with what part of the world they’re in. iran could be in South America or the Antarctica, they should still be embarrassed being iran.
