Although I haven't tried some of these more authentic dishes you did in the video. One thing I think USA shows us is, authentic isn't really the best tasting overall from my experience. But, the mixture of everything to achieve something new and different. But, I will see when I try the dishes you did, I have never even heard of them and I visited these restaraunts a decent amount. Cheers from Asheville o7

I would rather say, the taste differs from palate to palate and culture to culture. When KFC first launched in India (around 1997 if I'm not wrong), they used to sell their Original Recipe chicken which was "hyped" but didn't land very well amongst the India crowd as a lot of them considered it to be "bland" (maybe not blanket-ly, but just per out palate) leading to KFC launching a "Hot and Crispy" version which was spicy and more tuned to our tastes. Point being, the Original Recipe isn't the best tasting for someone of a different palate, but people of a similar palate (like the British or Aussies perhaps?) will like it as is. I'm pretty sure Mexicans or Viets (who tend to have a lot of spicy food with fresh herbs) will relish these Indian dishes a lot in its authentic self. Namaste from India🙏🏽

When Indians ask for "Chai Pani", it basically means some form of refreshments that might serve the purpose of fulfilling your apetite.. And sometimes, it shows respect towards guests.. Or perhaps a token of welcomeness

Great video Karl, and always honest. Yes things have to be geared towards an American audience. The fact that there is a line means their food is good. Nice, clean, and a great atmosphere as well. Really hope you had American BBQ though. Even though Carolina bbq isn't the best. Come to KC 😁

The prices though🤣 Also I get a feeling that Americans don't appreciate Indian American fusion...they are all about authenticity...they crave authentic Indian food...like when they see - say for example a Vada pao made with cheese, - they don't respect that; even though, it exists because they liked it at one point of time...that had its own audience ...maybe the green chutney and chili sauce on the buns were too hot for the Americans to handle...but it's okay that they liked it that way...let's make a parallel- Chinese food came to India and then changed it self so much that chinese don't even recognize their food in India any more...there are only a very few Chinese places in any city in India offering authentic Chinese food these days- the kind of food that every chinese would have at their homes day after day...and it's okay...the Indian chinese food has a huge audience...fried rice for me doesn't mean left over rice...for me it's fresh somewhat dry rice, cooked in a ton of garlic ginger and oils , and then seasoned with a lot more than soy sauce- in fact I like my fried rice so seasoned ( and with so many add ons) that it doesn't even need a side dish...craving authenticity is good...but you can't ignore fusion- that's how great new dishes come about!...American food sucks- but come to India and try fusion American Indian food and you will never want to go back...so yeah...start appreciating fusion food too!

I'm glad that Indian food is being recognized but I'm also kind of pained that you didn't go to the Bay Area in California and try some of the Indian food there! The community there is huge. If you dig back in history, there's also a Punjabi Mexican American community that developed out of Californian agriculture in the early 20th century, and the Ghadar party/movement fighting for independence from the British even published a newspaper out of San Francisco. So there's a lot of history up in California too!

Having lived in SF and going there a lot for work, I can attest to the fact that there are many good Indian restaurants there! (And some not so good!) I am sure the ones in the bay are are very good! Probably better than in the city (the rent is crazy in SF!). And more of a consistent crowd to support them I am sure! It is hard to cater to tourists only.

It's a good video ! I know it can be a matter of contention when ethnic cuisines are altered to suit local tastes, but on the other hand businesses are trying to make money. Also sometimes the recipe can be authentic but the taste can be somewhat different due to the origin of ingredients and other factors. Was the taste altered to be less hot, or was the flavour profile just different in other ways ? It seems that everyone enjoyed the food overall though.
@KarlRock2 жыл бұрын
Hey There. Just slightly wrong flavours. Most Indian food isn’t very “hot” generally, so I don’t think that’s an issue. There’s this one restaurant in my home town that makes Indian food the authentic way, and it’s become the top Indian restaurant in Auckland now. Queues every night. And reasonable pricing. I hope that keeps happening

Chai-Pani : This word got different context up to its situation , its code-word for bribe when you want your work to be done quickly than normally it takes time to do, OR when someone taking a lot time to eat, so in taunt we say are you done with your chai-pani, or even its used for evening snacks

As an Indian this video makes me so happy. Watching someone not from India sharing the same passion for Indian food as we do is truly amazing. Having no filter to say that the vadapav is not great makes me want to high-five you through the screen. Thank you! A little info to anyone who is new to Indian food: Most dishes that they serve in restaurants are also the dishes that we Indians only have in restaurants or cook at home occasionally. A paneer tikka or chicken tikka is not served everyday in a regular Indian household. The food that we cook at home contains more green vegetables, roti(not naan) and rice instead and is more easy on the stomach which sadly is not served as authentic Indian food bcz they are not commercially known. If you ever happen to make an Indian friend do ask them to cook you a dish that they cook and eat at home other than the famous ones you see on a restaurant’s menu.
